Book Analysis of the Hessian for Aerodynamic Optimization

Download or read book Analysis of the Hessian for Aerodynamic Optimization written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we analyze inviscid aerodynamic shape optimization problems governed by the full potential and the Euler equations in two and three dimensions. The analysis indicates that minimization of pressure dependent cost functions results in Hessians whose eigenvalue distributions are identical for the full potential and the Euler equations. However the optimization problems in two and three dimensions are inherently different. While the two dimensional optimization problems are well-posed the three dimensional ones are ill-posed. Oscillations in the shape up to the smallest scale allowed by the design space can develop in the direction perpendicular to the flow, implying that a regularization is required. A natural choice of such a regularization is derived. The analysis also gives an estimate of the Hessian's condition number which implies that the problems at hand are ill-conditioned. Infinite dimensional approximations for the Hessians are constructed and preconditioners for gradient based methods are derived from these approximate Hessians. Book Approximate Hessian for Accelerated Convergence of Aerodynamic Shape Optimization Problems in an Adjoint based Framework

Download or read book Approximate Hessian for Accelerated Convergence of Aerodynamic Shape Optimization Problems in an Adjoint based Framework written by Doug Shi-Dong and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An approximation of the Hessian matrix is developed and used to accelerate the convergence of an adjoint-based aerodynamic shape optimization framework. Exact analytical formulations of the direct-direct, adjoint-direct, adjoint-adjoint, and direct-adjoint Hessian approaches are presented and the equivalence between the adjoint-adjoint and direct-adjoint formulations is demonstrated. An approximation of the Hessian is obtained from the analytical formulation by partially solving first-order sensitivities to reduce computational time, while neglecting second-order sensitivities to ease implementation. Error bounds on the resulting approximation are presented for the first-order sensitivities through perturbation analysis and eigenvalue analysis. The proposed method is first assessed using an inverse design pressure problem for a quasi-one-dimensional Euler flow. Additionally, three-dimensional inviscid transonic test cases are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.Eigenvalue analysis of the Hessian for various test cases will seek to explain the resulting acceleration." --

Book An All at once Reduced Hessian SQP Scheme for Aerodynamic Design Optimization

Download or read book An All at once Reduced Hessian SQP Scheme for Aerodynamic Design Optimization written by Dan Feng and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper introduces a computational scheme for solving a class of aerodynamic design problems that can be posed as nonlinear equality constrained optimizations. The scheme treats the flow and design variables as independent variables, and solves the constrained optimization problem via reduced Hessian successive quadratic programming. It updates the design and flow variables simultaneously at each iteration and allows flow variables to be infeasible before convergence. The solution of an adjoint flow equation is never needed. In addition, a range space basis is chosen so that in a certain sense the 'cross term' ignored in reduced Hessian SQP methods is minimized. Numerical results for a nozzle design using the quasi-one-dimensional Euler equations show that this scheme is computationally efficient and robust. The computational cost of a typical nozzle design is only a fraction more than that of the corresponding analysis flow calculation. Superlinear convergence is also observed, which agrees with the theoretical properties of this scheme. All optimal solutions are obtained by starting far away from the final solution."

Book Constrained Optimization and Optimal Control for Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Constrained Optimization and Optimal Control for Partial Differential Equations written by Günter Leugering and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special volume focuses on optimization and control of processes governed by partial differential equations. The contributors are mostly participants of the DFG-priority program 1253: Optimization with PDE-constraints which is active since 2006. The book is organized in sections which cover almost the entire spectrum of modern research in this emerging field. Indeed, even though the field of optimal control and optimization for PDE-constrained problems has undergone a dramatic increase of interest during the last four decades, a full theory for nonlinear problems is still lacking. The contributions of this volume, some of which have the character of survey articles, therefore, aim at creating and developing further new ideas for optimization, control and corresponding numerical simulations of systems of possibly coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. The research conducted within this unique network of groups in more than fifteen German universities focuses on novel methods of optimization, control and identification for problems in infinite-dimensional spaces, shape and topology problems, model reduction and adaptivity, discretization concepts and important applications. Besides the theoretical interest, the most prominent question is about the effectiveness of model-based numerical optimization methods for PDEs versus a black-box approach that uses existing codes, often heuristic-based, for optimization.

Book Aerodynamic Shape Optimization Using Control Theory

Download or read book Aerodynamic Shape Optimization Using Control Theory written by James John Reuther and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Aerodynamic shape design has long persisted as a difficult scientific challenge due [sic] its highly nonlinear flow physics and daunting geometric complexity. However, with the emergence of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) it has become possible to make accurate predictions of flows which are not dominated by viscous effects. It is thus worthwhile to explore the extension of CFD methods for flow analysis to the treatment of aerodynamic shape design. Two new aerodynamic shape design methods are developed which combine existing CFD technology, optimal control theory, and numerical optimization techniques. Flow analysis methods for the potential flow equation and the Euler equations form the basis of the two respective design methods. In each case, optimal control theory is used to derive the adjoint differential equations, the solution of which provides the necessary gradient information to a numerical optimization method much more efficiently then [sic] by conventional finite differencing. Each technique uses a quasi-Newton numerical optimization algorithm to drive an aerodynamic objective function toward a minimum. An analytic grid perturbation method is developed to modify body fitted meshes to accommodate shape changes during the design process. Both Hicks-Henne perturbation functions and B-spline control points are explored as suitable design variables. The new methods prove to be computationally efficient and robust, and can be used for practical airfoil design including geometric and aerodynamic constraints. Objective functions are chosen to allow both inverse design to a target pressure distribution and wave drag minimization. Several design cases are presented for each method illustrating its practicality and efficiency. These include non-lifting and lifting airfoils operating at both subsonic and transonic conditions."

This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An all-at-once reduced Hessian Successive Quadratic Programming (SQP) scheme has been shown to be efficient for solving aerodynamic design optimization problems with a moderate number of design variables. This paper extends this scheme to allow solution refining. In particular, we introduce a reduced Hessian refining technique that is critical for making a smooth transition of the Hessian information from coarse grids to fine grids. Test results on a nozzle design using quasi-one-dimensional Euler equations show that through solution refining the efficiency and the robustness of the all-at-once reduced Hessian SQP scheme are significantly improved. Book Large Scale PDE Constrained Optimization in Applications

Download or read book Large Scale PDE Constrained Optimization in Applications written by Subhendu Bikash Hazra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With continuous development of modern computing hardware and applicable - merical methods, computational ?uid dynamics (CFD) has reached certain level of maturity so that it is being used routinely by scientists and engineers for ?uid ?ow analysis. Since most of the real-life applications involve some kind of optimization, it has been natural to extend the use of CFD tools from ?ow simulation to simu- tion based optimization. However, the transition from simulation to optimization is not straight forward, it requires proper interaction between advanced CFD meth- ologies and state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. The ultimate goal is to achieve optimal solution at the cost of few ?ow solutions. There is growing number of - search activities to achieve this goal. This book results from my work done on simulation based optimization problems at the Department of Mathematics, University of Trier, and reported in my postd- toral thesis (”Habilitationsschrift”) accepted by the Faculty-IV of this University in 2008. The focus of the work has been to develop mathematical methods and - gorithms which lead to ef?cient and high performance computational techniques to solve such optimization problems in real-life applications. Systematic development of the methods and algorithms are presented here. Practical aspects of implemen- tions are discussed at each level as the complexity of the problems increase, suppo- ing with enough number of computational examples.

Book Optimization Techniques Exploiting Problem Structure

Download or read book Optimization Techniques Exploiting Problem Structure written by Ajit R. Shenoy and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The research presented in this dissertation investigates the use of all-at-once methods applied to aerodynamic design. All-at-once schemes are usually based on the assumption of sufficient continuity in the constraints and objectives, and this assumption can be troublesome in the presence of shock discontinuities. Special treatment has to be considered for such problems and we study several approaches. Our all-at-once methods are based on the Sequential Quadratic Programming method, and are designed to exploit the structure inherent in a given problem. The first method is a Reduced Hessian formulation which projects the optimization problem to a lower dimension design space. The second method exploits the sparse structure in a given problem which can yield significant savings in terms of computational effort as well as storage requirements. An underlying theme in all our applications is that careful analysis of the given problem can often lead to an efficient implementation of these all-at-once methods. Chapter 2 describes a nozzle design problem involving one-dimensional transonic flow. An initial formulation as an optimal control problem allows us to solve the problem as as two-point boundary problem which provides useful insight into the nature of the problem. Using the Reduced Hessian formulation for this problem, we find that a conventional CFD method based on shock capturing produces poor performance. The numerical difficulties caused by the presence of the shock can be alleviated by reformulating the constraints so that the shock can be treated explicitly. This amounts to using a shock fitting technique. In Chapter 3, we study variants of a simplified temperature control problem. The control problem is solved using a sparse SQP scheme. We show that for problems where the underlying infinite-dimensional problem is well-posed, the optimizer performs well, whereas it fails to produce good results for problems where the underlying infinite-dimensional problem is ill-posed. A transonic airfoil design problem is studied in Chapter 4, using the Reduced SQP formulation. We propose a scheme for performing the optimization subtasks that is based on an Euler Implicit time integration scheme. The motivation is to preserve the solution-finding structure used in the analysis algorithm. Preliminary results obtained using this method are promising. Numerical results have been presented for all the problems described.
