Book Analysis of the Geometry Adjustments to Rapid Creek in a 20 year Period

Download or read book Analysis of the Geometry Adjustments to Rapid Creek in a 20 year Period written by Brandon Miles Kruge and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid Creek has been heavily modified through Rapid City. The hydrologic regime has been modified by the presence of reservoirs in the upper basin (Pactola and Deerfield). The bed material sized sediment load regime has been modified by the capture of coarse sediments within those reservoirs and in Canyon Lake. The creek has been channelized, and the banks of the stream have been artificially armored in some reaches to prevent lateral migration. This study seeks to answer the question of what geometric adjustments still occur in such a constrained context. Cross-sections that were surveyed in 2000 as part of a fish habitat analysis were resurveyed in 2020 in a 3.31-milereach of Rapid Creek that extends downstream of Canyon Lake to the upstream end of Founders Park in Rapid City. A total of 151 cross-sections were repeat surveyed and each pair of cross-sections was evaluated in cross-sectional view to quantify differences. The bankfull elevation (where the flow just overtops the bank and begins to engage the flood plain) forms the natural upper boundary to define the cross-sectional area. A reference surface of the 1.75-year recurrence interval flow (used to replace the bankfull elevation due to varying bank conditions) was used to define flow areas for the 2000 and2020 surveyed cross-sections. Of the 151 cross-sections, 35 showed significant (> 20%) area increase between 2000 and 2020, indicating net erosion of the section. Twenty-nine showed significant (>15%) decrease between 2000 and 2020, indicating net deposition. No data distinction could be made for 18 sections due to a significant vertical error in the2000 surveyed cross-sections which could not be resolved. Sixty-nine showed an insignificant change in cross-sectional area (the 2020 area was between 85% and 120%of the 2000 area). Of the 69 that showed insignificant cross-sectional area change, this does not necessarily indicate that no erosion or deposition occurred. Twenty-four involved insignificant deposition and/or erosion. However, the remaining 41 included some that had laterally migrated and concurrently deposited approximately equal volumes. Some did not laterally shift but had rearranged the bed within the section such that net volumes were approximately equal. A general upstream to downstream trend in change was identified. In the upstream portion of the study area, geometric changes were negligible. Proceeding downstream, approximately 1.3 miles below the upper end of the study area, more substantial bed/bank elevation changes were observed. This reach has experienced net erosion. Further downstream, approximately 1.9 miles below the upper end of the study area, is a reach that has undergone net deposition. A two-dimensional hydraulic analysis of the middle reach that underwent the most substantial geometric changes revealed that velocity distributions and boundary shear stress distributions were altered. While the occurrence of a dynamic channel is generally positive for overall stream functionality, the ultimate dynamic equilibrium state of such a constrained system still is not known. Whether changes that have been observed within the last 20 years indicate a trend of ongoing change or just simple variability about some mean condition has not been ascertained and will require future observations. The implications of the hydraulic changes observed on fish habitat also warrants further exploration.

Book Geomorphic Analysis of River Systems

Download or read book Geomorphic Analysis of River Systems written by Kirstie A. Fryirs and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a niche in the geomorphology teaching market, this introductory book is built around a 12 week course in fluvial geomorphology. ‘Reading the landscape’ entails making sense of what a riverscape looks like, how it works, how it has evolved over time, and how alterations to one part of a catchment may have secondary consequences elsewhere, over different timeframes. These place-based field analyses are framed within their topographic, climatic and environmental context. Issues and principles presented in the first part of this book provide foundational understandings that underpin the approach to reading the landscape that is presented in the second half of the book. In reading the landscape, detective-style investigations and interpretations are tied to theoretical and conceptual principles to generate catchment-specific analyses of river character, behaviour and evolution, including responses to human disturbance. This book has been constructed as an introductory text on river landscapes, providing a bridge and/or companion to quantitatively-framed or modelled approaches to landscape analysis that are addressed elsewhere. Key principles outlined in the book emphasise the importance of complexity, contingency and emergence in interpreting the character, behaviour and evolution of any given system. The target audience is second and third year undergraduate students in geomorphology, hydrology, earth science and environmental science, as well as river practitioners who use geomorphic understandings to guide scientific and/or management applications. The primary focus of Kirstie and Gary’s research and teaching entails the use of geomorphic principles as a tool with which to develop coherent scientific understandings of river systems, and the application of these understandings in management practice. Kirstie and Gary are co-developers of the River Styles® Framework and Short Course that is widely used in river management, decision-making and training. Book excerpt: Beyond BIM explores the vast and under-explored design potential undertaken by information modeling. Through a series of investigations grounded in the analysis of built work, interviews with leading practitioners, and speculative projects, the author catalogs the practical advantages and theoretical implications of exploiting BIM as a primary tool for design innovation. Organized by information type, such as geographic data, local code, or materials, each chapter suggests a realm of knowledge that can be harvested and imported into BIM to give meaningful specificity to architectural form and space. While highly sustainable, the work documented and envisioned in this book moves well beyond ‘normalization,’ to reveal inventive takes on contemporary practice. Beyond BIM serves as a primary resource for professional architects from practice, researchers and designers engaged in information related spatial design processes, as well as students and faculties of architecture schools in search of BIM design inspiration. Likewise, those highly attuned to computation and unconventional ways of creating form and space, particularly built outcomes that utilize BIM, will find this book meaningful and essential.

Book Volcaniclastic Sedimentation in Lacustrine Settings

Download or read book Volcaniclastic Sedimentation in Lacustrine Settings written by James D. L. White and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a unique compendium of papers assessing theeffects of volcanism on lakes, as recorded by the volcaniclasticsediments deposited within them. The unifying theme is that theeffects of volcanism on lacustrine sedimentation are diverse anddistinctive, and that volcaniclastic lacustrine sediments hold thekey to understanding a range of processes and events that cannot bereadily addressed by the study of any non-volcanic lakes. Thirteen papers, with authors from nine countries, examine bothmodern and ancient eruption-affected lacustrine deposits. Volcaniceruptions affect lakes and their deposits in many ways, and thesepapers evaluate processes and products of volcanic eruptions withinlakes, of tectonically impounded lakes strongly influenced byvolcanism, of eruption-impounded lakes and of general factorscontrolling sedimentation of vitric ash and pumice.Tephrastratigraphic studies also take advantage of the exceptionalpreservation of thin laminae in quiet lakes to precisely dateepisodes in the evolution of long-lived lakes and their catchmentareas, and to understand how volcanism affects normal lacustrineprocesses. The volume as a whole is an unparalleled source of informationon all aspects of the physical sedimentary results of volcanism inlacustrine settings, and serves as a complement to other studiesconcerned primarily with thermal and geochemical characteristics oflakes within volcanic craters. This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the processing of the 15th ICMBE held from 4th to 7th December 2013, Singapore. Biomedical engineering is applied in most aspects of our healthcare ecosystem. From electronic health records to diagnostic tools to therapeutic, rehabilitative and regenerative treatments, the work of biomedical engineers is evident. Biomedical engineers work at the intersection of engineering, life sciences and healthcare. The engineers would use principles from applied science including mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer engineering together with physical sciences including physics, chemistry and mathematics to apply them to biology and medicine. Applying such concepts to the human body is very much the same concepts that go into building and programming a machine. The goal is to better understand, replace or fix a target system to ultimately improve the quality of healthcare. With this understanding, the conference proceedings offer a single platform for individuals and organizations working in the biomedical engineering related field to gather and network with each other in so doing create the catalyst for future development of biomedical engineering in Asia.
