Book Effect of Irradiation on Elastic Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Effect of Irradiation on Elastic Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels written by P. Soulat and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irradiation experiments were conducted in order to determine the effect of radiation damage on the elastic-plastic ductile fracture toughness of pressure vessel steels. Curves for the J-integral versus crack growth resistance (?a) were established on specimens taken out of two nuclear reactor pressure vessel steels before and after neutron irradiation at 290°C to a fluence of 3.1019 n/cm2 (work function energy E > 1 MeV). The J-?a tests were performed at room temperature (25°C) and service temperature (290°C). The main results obtained are as follows:.

Book excerpt: This publication sets out the findings of a co-ordinated research project to determine the influence of the mechanism of the deterioration effect in radiation embrittlement of reactor pressure vessel steels with a high nickel content in nuclear power plants, including procurement of materials, determination of mechanical properties, irradiation and testing of specimens, and microstructural characterisation.

Book Irradiation Effects in Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Irradiation Effects in Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels written by CZ. Serpan and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The embrittling effect of neutron irradiation on reactor pressure vessel steel and welds has a significant impact on the regulation of reactors by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Because the NRC is concerned with the continuing integrity and safety of the reactor's primary system, the neutron-irradiation-induced loss of fracture toughness and ductility must be carefully documented, understood, and controlled to assure that despite such loss, there is always a sufficient reserve of toughness and ductility to preclude crack initiation and uncontrolled propagation in the unlikely event of an accident. Aspects of embrittlement important to the NRC, which are discussed herein, include prediction of the transition temperature and upper-shelf-energy levels at critical vessel locations for the setting of pressure-temperature limits, for analysis of accident loadings such as pressurized thermal shock, and for evaluation of flaws found in inspection. Also discussed are the use of embrittlement-related neutron dosimetry and evaluation of vessel annealing.

Book A Method of Application of Elastic Plastic Fracture Mechanics to Nuclear Vessel Analysis

Download or read book A Method of Application of Elastic Plastic Fracture Mechanics to Nuclear Vessel Analysis written by PC. Paris and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this work was to develop analytical relationships which could be used to assess the safety of irradiated nuclear reactor pressure vessels against unstable fracture. The need for such a calculation occurs when the Charpy uppershelf energy of the vessel steel is predicted to fall below the required 50 ft • lb (67.8 J) level from accumulated neutron radiation damage. The method used was based on "tearing instability" concepts under "J-controlled growth" conditions for the crack stability criterion. The aforementioned purpose was served by developing fracture mechanics methods of wider applicability than previously available and applying them in analyses at uppershelf conditions (above the transition temperature). Elastic-plastic fracture mechanics concepts were used to extend recognized linear elastic fracture mechanics flaw analysis equations for through-the-thickness flaws and surface flaws into the plastic range. The approach also made use of J-R curve characterization of the material fracture resistance.

Book Irradiation Effects in Low alloy Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels Heavy Section Steel Technology Program Series 4 and 5

Download or read book Irradiation Effects in Low alloy Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels Heavy Section Steel Technology Program Series 4 and 5 written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents studies on the irradiation effects in low-alloy reactor pressure vessel steels. The Fourth Heavy-Section Steel Technology (HSST) Irradiation Series, almost completed, was aimed at elastic-plastic and fully plastic fracture toughness of low-copper weldments (''current practice welds''). A typical nuclear pressure vessel plate steel was included for statistical purposes. The Fifth HSST Irradiation Series, now in progress, is aimed at determining the shape of the K/sub IR/ curve after significant radiation-induced shift of the transition temperatures. This series includes irradiated test specimens of thicknesses up to 100 mm and weldment compositions typical of early nuclear power reactor pressure vessel welds. 27 refs., 22 figs. (JDB).

Book Effect of Irradiation on the Elasto Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Effect of Irradiation on the Elasto Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels written by P. Petrequin and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study on the effect of irradiation on the toughness of pressure vessel materials in the ductile regime has been undertaken. Compact tension (CT) specimens of two pressure vessel steels (A533 B and A508 Class 3) and a weld material of fitting chemical composition were irradiated and received neutron fluences of 3 and 8 x 1019 n/cm2. The J-R curves of these materials were determined between 100 and 290°C. Only a very small influence of irradiation was observed for tests at 290°C. In irradiated condition, the effect of the test temperature is not noticeable. At lower temperature, but in the ductile regime, the weld material appears to be more sensitive to neutron irradiation than the two steels. The forged material exhibited a surprisingly high shift of transition temperature since cleavage rupture occurred up to 100°C.
