Book Finding the Family in Medieval and Early Modern Scotland

Download or read book Finding the Family in Medieval and Early Modern Scotland written by Elizabeth Ewan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this interdisciplinary collaboration, an international group of scholars have come together to suggest new directions for the study of the family in Scotland circa 1300-1750. Contributors apply tools from across a range of disciplines including art history, literature, music, gender studies, anthropology, history and religious studies to assess creatively the broad range of sources which inform our understanding of the pre-modern Scottish family. A central purpose of this volume is to encourage further studies in this area by highlighting the types of sources available, as well as actively engaging in broader historiographical debates to demonstrate how important and effective family studies are to advancing our understanding of the past. Articles in the first section demonstrate the richness and variety of sources that exist for studies of the Scottish family. These essays clearly highlight the uniqueness, feasibility and value of family studies for pre-industrial Scotland. The second and third sections expand upon the arguments made in part one to demonstrate the importance of family studies for engaging in broader historiographical issues. The focus of section two is internal to the family. These articles assess specific family roles and how they interact with broader social forces/issues. In the final section the authors explore issues of kinship ties (an issue particularly associated with popular images of Scotland) to examine how family networks are used as a vehicle for social organization.

Book Narratives of the Religious Self in Early Modern Scotland

Download or read book Narratives of the Religious Self in Early Modern Scotland written by David George Mullan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a rich, yet untapped, source of Scottish autobiographical writing, this book provides a fascinating insight into the nature and extent of early-modern religious narratives. Over 80 such personal documents, including diaries and autobiographies, manuscript and published, clerical and lay, feminine and masculine, are examined and placed both within the context of seventeenth-century Scotland, and also early-modern narratives produced elsewhere. In addition to the focus on narrative, the study also revolves around the notion of conversion, which, while a concept known in many times and places, is not universal in its meaning, but must be understood within the peculiarities of a specific context and the needs of writers located in a specific tradition, here, Puritanism and evangelical Presbyterianism. These conversions and the narratives which provide a means of articulation draw deeply from the Bible, including the Psalms and the Song of Solomon. The context must also include an appreciation of the political history, especially during the religious persecutions under Charles II and James VII, and later the changing and unstable conditions experienced after the arrival of William and Mary on her father's throne. Another crucial context in shaping these narratives was the form of religious discourse manifested in sermons and other works of divinity and the work seeks to investigate relations between ministers and their listeners. Through careful analysis of these narratives, viewing them both as individual documents and as part of a wider genre, a fuller picture of seventeenth-century life can be drawn, especially in the context of the family and personal development. Thus the book may be of interest to students in a variety of areas of study, including literary, historical, and theological contexts. It provides for a greater understanding of the motivations behind such personal expressions of early-modern religious faith, whose echoes can still be heard today.

Book Scottish Puritanism 1590 1638

Download or read book Scottish Puritanism 1590 1638 written by David George Mullan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish Puritanism, 1590-1638, is a portrait of Protestantism in the two generations leading to the National Covenant of 1638. This book investigates the construction of a puritan community embracing 'godly' ministers along with significant numbers of lay men and women willing to engage in the practice of a piety which confronted the inner person and the external world, seeking the reformation of both. Topics include attitudes towards the Bible and the sacraments, the nature of the Christian life, the place of the feminine in Scottish divinity, and the development of ideas about predestination, covenanting, and the relationship between church and state. The book addresses the tensions inherent in puritanism, such as those associated with the nature of the church and the extent of freedom, and provides a perspective on the relationship between Scottish and English religious developments.

Excerpt: ... the covenanters of teviotdale and neighbouring districts. chapter I. the signing of the covenant at hawick in 1638. In the seventeenth century a contest was waged in Scotland, to be acquainted with which is a duty incumbent on every Scotsman. If we appreciate the civil and religious liberties we to-day enjoy, we shall hold that contest in everlasting remembrance. To the Covenanters, far more than to any others, are we indebted for our freedom. By their resisting unto blood they not only flung off a blighting tyranny, but also put a love of liberty in our Scottish blood, which can never be dislodged. Besides, they have transmitted other influences which have immensely helped to make Scotland's character and raise her to the present position she occupies among the nations. It is an undoubted fact that their struggle greatly promoted vital religion. On that blood-stained page of our nation's history we see more convincing evidences of the truth of Christianity than in the elaborate productions of many an apologist. Even one man acting under the influence of principle is himself a powerful argument in favour of the Christian religion; but when we turn to the Covenanters we see multitudes of men and women acting bravely for conscience sake while the tyrant's sword was hanging over their heads. Charles I. received a fatal inheritance from his father. His mind was filled by James vi. with extreme ideas about the Divine right of kings to do whatever suited their royal pleasure, and about the duty of subjects to submissively take their opin
