Book Methods of Analysis for Variable Wall Thicknesses of Cylindrical Shells Subjected to Arbitrary Pressure Distributions

Download or read book Methods of Analysis for Variable Wall Thicknesses of Cylindrical Shells Subjected to Arbitrary Pressure Distributions written by Robert M. Rivello and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of analysis for thin-walled circular shells having variable thickness in the longitudinal direction and subjected to arbitrary pressure distributions are discussed. Methods suitable for digital machine computation are given for two types of problems. In the first case the shell is assumed to be free at one end and clamped at the other. It is loaded by a pressure distribution symmetrical about a plane containing the axis of the cylinder but otherwise arbitrary. The second case treated is that of a cylindrical shell subjected to a rotationally symmetric pressure or temperature distribution and with various end conditions. A numerical example is given for the free-clamped end case and the results are compared with experimental data. The method for rotationally symmetric pressure and temperature distributions is applied to some problems for which closed form solutions are possible and the results are compared with these exact solutions. Book An Experimental and Analytical Vibration Study of Elliptical Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book An Experimental and Analytical Vibration Study of Elliptical Cylindrical Shells written by John L. Sewall and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports an experimental and analytical vibration study of free-free isotropic elliptical cylindrical shells of constant mass ranging in cross-sectional eccentricity from zero (circular shell) to 0.916. Experimental resonant frequencies, nodal patterns, and mode shapes were obtained by use of an air-jet shaker or an electrodynamic shaker with a noncontact inductance probe that could be moved over most of the shell surface. Experimental frequencies were in generally good agreement with analytical frequencies calculated by means of a Rayleigh-Ritz type of analysis featuring multiterm longitudinal and circumferential modal expansions. Frequencies for shells with eccentricity of 0.916 were as much as 40 percent below the corresponding circular-shell frequencies. As eccentricity increased, analytical and experimental mode shapes indicated considerable longitudinal and circumferential modal coupling.

Book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells written by N. Yamaki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1984-02-01 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book The Theory of Rotationally Symmetric Plastic Shells

Download or read book The Theory of Rotationally Symmetric Plastic Shells written by Philip Gibson Hodge and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defining equations for a rigid/perfectly plastic shell are derived from basic principles. On the basis of a single geometric assumption for the velocity field, generalized strain rates and stresses are defined and equilibrium relations deduced. Shell yield conditions and flow law are discussed in general terms and then specifically for piecewise linear yield conditions. Preceding the general shell problem, the theory of beams under bending and axial forces is discussed to give a general insight into plastic structural behavior. The paper closes with an application to cylindrical shells and a discussion of areas for future development.

Book Three dimensional and Shell Theory Analysis of Axially symmetric Motions of Cylinders

Download or read book Three dimensional and Shell Theory Analysis of Axially symmetric Motions of Cylinders written by Columbia University. Institute of Air Flight Structures and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequency (or phase velocity) of axially symmetric free vibrations in an elastic, isotropic circular cylinder of medium thickness is studies on the basis of the three-dimensional linear theory of elasticity and also on the basis of several different shell theories. To be in good agreement with the solution of the three-dimensional equations for short wave lengths, an approximate theory has to include the influence of rotatory inertia and transverse shear deformation for example in a manner similar as in Mindlin's plate theory. A shell theory of this (Timoshenko) type is educed from the three-dimensional elasticity theory. From a comparison of phase velocities it appears that, to a good approximation, membrane and curvature effects on one hand and flexural, rotatory inertia and shear deformation effects, on the other hand, are mutually exclusive in two ranges of wave lengths, separated by a "transition: wave length. Thus, in the full range of wave lengths, the associated lowest phase velocities may be determined on the basis of the membrane shell theory (for wave lengths larger than the transition wave length) and on the basis of Mindlin's plate theory (for wave lengths smaller that the transition wave length).

Book On Two and Three Dimensional Results for Rotationally Symmetric Deformations of Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book On Two and Three Dimensional Results for Rotationally Symmetric Deformations of Circular Cylindrical Shells written by S. Nair and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous considerations by asymptotic expansion procedures of the relation between elasticity theory results and thin-shell theory results for the case of rotationally symmetric deformations of an edge-loaded semi-infinite circular cylindrical shell are supplemented by an analysis of this problem for a shell possessing a limiting-type orthotropy, such that transverse normal strains vanish identically. It is shown that assuming this kind of orthotropy has the important benefit of allowing the derivation of exact expressions for the edge zone solution contribution, when such exact expressions are not possible for the problem of the shell with more general properties of the material. Book Buckling of Thin Metal Shells

Download or read book Buckling of Thin Metal Shells written by J.G. Teng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-06-28 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin-walled metal shell structures are highly efficient in their use of material, but they are particularly sensitive to failure by buckiling. Many different forms of buckling can occur for different geometries and different loading conditions. Because this field of knowledge is both complex and industrially important, it is of great interest and concern in a wide range of industries. This book presents a compilation and synthesis of a wealth of research, experience and knowledge of the subject. Information that was previously widely scattered throughout the literature is assembled in a concise and convenient form that is easy to understand, and state-of-the-art research findings are thoroughly examined. This book is useful for those involved in the structural design of silos, tanks, pipelines, biodigestors, chimneys, towers, offshore platforms, aircraft and spacecraft. Buckling of Thin Metal Shells is essential reading for designers, researchers and code writers involved with thin-walled metal shell structures.
