Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer analysis has been developed to predict the behavior of tall buildings subjected to lateral loads. The buildings considered are composed of shear walls and frames. Each shear wall-frame unit undergoes equal lateral deformations and the structure as a whole does not deform torsionally. The analysis is performed on a subassemblage consisting of a lumped shear wall system and a simple substitute frame. The load-deflection relationship for the structure is determined up to the ultimate load. The formation of plastic hinges in the substitute frame has been considered as well as the inelastic action of the wall. In addition, the secondary moments produced by the axial forces in the columns acting through the sway displacements of the structure are considered. The lumping procedure used to form the subassemblage is discussed and the analysis of the subassemblage in both the elastic and inelastic range, including the P-[delta] effect, is presented. The results of the analysis are compared with those obtained by other methods. The behavior of a shear wall-frame structure is discussed and illustrated by an example.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to model and analyze the nonplanar shear wall assemblies of shear wall-frame structures. Two three dimensional models, for open and closed section shear wall assemblies, are developed. These models are based on conventional wide column analogy, in which a planar shear wall is replaced by an idealized frame structure consisting of a column and rigid beams located at floor levels. The rigid diaphragm floor assumption, which is widely used in the analysis of multistorey building structures, is also taken into consideration. The connections of the rigid beams are released against torsion in the model proposed for open section shear walls. For modelling closed section shear walls, in addition to this the torsional stiffness of the wide columns are adjusted by using a series of equations. Several shear wall-frame systems having different shapes of nonplanar shear wall assemblies are analyzed by static lateral load, response spectrum and time history methods where the proposed methods are used. The results of these analyses are compared with the results obtained by using common shear wall modelling techniques.

Book excerpt: The various structural forms commonly adopted for the construction of multi-storey structures are outlined and the advantages of the use of shear walls as the load bearing elements in such structures are indicated. It is shown that, although a considerable amount of research has been devoted to the analysis of multi-storey structures, very little attention has been paid to the effects of foundation deformations on these structures. Three methods for the analysis of shear wall structures are indicated and the suitability of the continuous connection technique for the investigation of the effects of foundation deformations is shown. Two-dimensional coupled shear wall systems and single walls or box cores, all of which may be based on elastic foundations are analysed subjected to either of two generalised distributions of horizontal forces. The expressions derived for plane coupled shear walls are adapted to produce methods whereby design curves may be drawn for the rapid evaluation of stresses and deflections. The relationships derived for the two-dimensional analysis are used to derive a method for the analysis of the load distribution in three-dimensional multi-storey shear wall structures subjected to any system of lateral loads which may produce bending and torsion of the structure. The suitability of the analytical methods for the numerical computation of problems involving shear wall structures is discussed with particular reference to the feasibility of hand calculations and the development of a useful system of programs for computer analysis. The results of a number of numerical studies, carried out with the aid of the computer programs, are given to illustrate various aspects of the theory. The importance of accurately determining the extent and nature of the lateral load bearing systems within a structure is illustrated. The convergence of solutions obtained using the two load distributions are compared and the applications of each are discussed. The effects of varying the flexibility of the foundations, both of a two-dimensional coupled wall system and of specific walls in three-dimensional structures are illustrated by examples. A description is given of an experimental investigation carried out to study the effects of the elastic deformation of foundations on model shear wall structures constructed from "Perspex" sheets. The results of a comprehensive series of tests on the models are compared with the corresponding analytical solutions in order to assess the validity of the assumptions which were made in the derivation of the analytical methods.

Book excerpt: Lateral Stiffness is one of the most important properties of a building which not only defines resistance to displacements under lateral loads but it can also have a great impact on natural period of a structure. Different stiffness values can ultimately affect the behavior of a structure under seismic loads and lateral forces that will be applied to it. In this study several parameters that can affect lateral stiffness of shear wall-frame buildings have been studied. At first, different configurations of shear walls in plan were analyzed in both medium rise and high rise buildings. In both cases, models with a central concrete core showed higher stiffness and smaller lateral displacements but at the same time, higher story forces were applied to the structure in seismic analysis. Cracking in shear walls is the other parameter considered in this study. Results indicate that cracked modification factors introduced in ACI can greatly impact the stiffness and other related properties of a building. A more precise approach is used to identify cracked elements based on finite element methods. Openings in shear walls have also been studied. Analysis results showed that in the case considered, openings with an area up to 10% of the wall did not have a significant influence on stiffness of the structure but higher opening ratios eventually resulted into severe loss of stiffness and large displacements. Stiffness of walls not parallel to direction of load is also investigated. Results indicate that even small angles between direction of load and shear wall can considerably reduce the stiffness of a structure in a specific direction. In the end, two parameters affecting flexural capacity of shear walls have been studied, vertical reinforcement and wall thickness. Even though an increase in each of the two parameters can be helpful, results show that each of them can increase flexural capacity of a section more efficiently under different conditions. Analysis in all of the models is performed by ETABS 2013. The intention is not to get involved in too many complex calculations, but rather compare the behavior of buildings in different conditions as a practical guide.

Analyses were performed to assess the shear strength, stiffness, ductility, equivalent energy elastic plastic (EEEP), and hysteretic parameters of tested SCWF shear wall specimens. Experimental tests also provided the seismic design coefficients of SCWF shear walls, which are currently lacking in the building codes.

In multi-storey buildings made of reinforced concrete, the lateral loads are often resisted by specially arranged shear walls. Weakening of shear walls in tall buildings by doors, windows and corridor openings is one of the most frequently encountered problems of structural engineering. In planar coupled shear wall analyses, the lateral loads are applied in such a way that the deformation of the shear wall is confined within its own plane. In this book, the Continous Connection Method (CCM) is used in conjunction with Vlasov's theory of thin-walled beams, for the three dimensional analysis of non-planar coupled shear walls subjected to lateral loads which produce combined flexural and torsional deformations. To be more general, the present book deals with non-symmetrical structures both in the formulation and in the numerical applications. Both symmetrical and asymmetrical examples have been solved by the program prepared in the present study and compared with the solutions found by the SAP2000 structural analysis program and a perfect match has been observed.

Book excerpt: This report is a user's guide for CTABS80, a computer program for the linear three-dimensional structural analysis of multistory frame and shear wall buildings subjected to static or dynamic loadings. In CTABS80, the building is idealized as an assemblage of vertical independent frame and shear wall systems interconnected by horizontal floor diaphragms which are rigid in their own plane. The frame and shear wall systems must basically be of rectangular geometry (in elevation) with vertical columns (or piers) and horizontal beams (or spandrels). However, with special modeling techniques, very complex situations may be considered. A special shear panel element is developed to enable modeling of discontinuous shear walls and shear walls with arbitrary openings. A diagonal bracing element to model braced frames (X-braced, K-braced, or eccentrically braced systems) is also presented. The column, shear panel, and diagonal formulations include the effects of bending, axial, and shear deformations. Bending and shear deformations are also included in the beam formulation; however, the effects of axial deformations are neglected. The effects of the finite dimensions of the beams and columns on the stiffness of a frame or shear wall system are automatically included.

The system of planar coupled walls with continuously variable stiffness has been analysed and two methods of solution, the Galerkin and the finite difference methodsy proposed. The results of tests on perspex models with tapered width agreed reasonably well with the analytical results. A new technique which enables important design quantities for uniform coupled wall systems on flexible bases to be evaluated rapidly has been developed. The desIgn curves for several standard load cases, vertical and lateral loads have been produced. These design curves are applicable to two coupled wall systems or any symmetrical system with three coupled walls. The lateral-load analysis of symmetrical shear wall and shear wall-frame structures has been presented. The bending and torsional actions of the applied loads are analysed separately. Each separate analysis is reducible to the analysis of an equivalent analogous plane system. The method is particularly suitable for analysing a symmetrical structure which consists of a few distinct groups of coupled wall assemblies. Asymmetrical shear wall and shear wall-frame structures have also been treated, Finally the structure composed of thin-walled assemblies has been analysed by using Vlasov's theory for thin-walled beams of open section. The theoretical results were compared with the results of tests on a fourteen-storey perspex model. Reasonable agreement was obtained between theory and experiment.
