Book excerpt: Quantal response analysis is used to estimate the probability of a dichotomous response, e.g., complete penetration, as a function of a stimulus variable. Using maximum likelihood and the DiDonato-Janagin algorithm, estimates of the normal distribution parameters that underlie threshold stimulus levels are obtainable if a zone of mixed results is observed in the test data and if the average success-producing stimulus exceeds the average failure-producing stimulus. In the absence of a zone of mixed results, a method is proposed that utilizes data augmentation to estimate some parameter of interest, e.g., the probability of success at a specific stimulus level. This method generates artificial copies of the original data set of stimuli and responses and then adds a random noise component to each of the stimuli.

Nash equilibrium assumes precise and perfect decision making in games, but human behavior is inherently stochastic and people realize that the behavior of others is not perfectly predictable. In contrast, QRE models choice behavior as probabilistic and extends classical game theory into a more realistic and useful framework with broad applications for economics, political science, management, and other social sciences. Quantal Response Equilibrium spans the range from basic theoretical foundations to examples of how the principles yield useful predictions and insights in strategic settings, including voting, bargaining, auctions, public goods provision, and more. It is shown that a general joint prior may be constructed as a mixture of ordered M variate Dirichlet distributions, which possesses marginals of nearly arbitrary shapes. Posterior marginals at both observational and non-observational stresses are shown to consist of sums of beta distributions. Recursive relationships are developed that permit the rapid and exact computation of the posterior marginal distributions. The model is attractive for use in successive Bayesian analyses.

Book excerpt: If different levels of stimuli are applied and then counts are made of the number reacting and not-reacting to the stimuli, a sensitivity analysis is usually the best analysis to be applied. Sensitivity analysis may be used to determine the probability of destroying a target with different size bombs, without the necessity of actually having data on all the different sizes. It may also be used in determining the effect of a drug on a patient or the effect of polution on a body of water. This paper is concerned with a generalized model for sensitivity analysis based on the Burr distribution. This generalization gives a model that will fit quite well data that comes from probit or logit models, but also covers many additional situations that the probit or logit models would not fit. A FORTRAN IV program is included for doing the analysis on a computer. Confidence intervals for any quantile are also given. (Author).
