Book excerpt: The performance of superconducting cavities in accelerators can be limited by several factors, such as: field emission, quenches, arcing, rf power; and the maximum gradient at which a cavity can operate will be determined by the lowest of these limitations for that particular cavity. The CEBAF accelerator operates with over 300 cavities and, for each of them, the authors have determined the maximum operating gradient and its limiting factor. They have developed a model that allows them to determine the distribution of gradients that could be achieved for each of these limitations independently of the others. The result of this analysis can guide an R & D program to achieve the best overall performance improvement. The same model can be used to relate the performance of single-cell and multi-cell cavities.

Book excerpt: Superconducting rf (SRF) cavities made of niobium are now approaching their theoretical superheating field limit. Alternative materials such as Nb3 Sn and MgB2 are predicted to have significant higher fields and are very interesting for next generation srf cavities. A high field and high sensitivity sample host cavity will be an ideal tool for studying various field-dependent loss phenomena and to explore the ultimate performance of these new types of rf superconductors. In this thesis, I will present my developments of two TE-type sample host niobium cavity systems which recently have reached among the highest magnetic field ever achieved (~ 60 mT) on the sample surface with n[OHM SIGN] sensitivity in rf surface resistance. The rf design, fabrication, surface treatments, input coupler development and rf testing results both with baseline niobium and with a Nb3 Sn sample plate will be presented in detail. Methods of improving sample surface magnetic field up to 100 mT will be presented. Surface defects such as pits have been identified as some of the main sources of limitations of srf cavity performance. I have made a single cell cavity with 30 artificial pits in the high magnetic field region to gain new insight in how pits limit the cavity performance. The test of the pit cavity showed clear evidence that the edges of two of the largest radius pits transitioned into the normal conducting state at field just below the quench field of the cavity, and that the quench was indeed induced by these two pits. The pit geometrical informa- tion measured by laser confocal microscopy combined with a numerical finite element ring-type defect model will be compared with temperature mapping results. Insights about quench and non-linear rf resistances will be presented.

Book excerpt: The superconducting parallel-bar cavity is a deflecting/crabbing cavity with attractive properties, compared to other conventional designs, that is being considered for a number of applications. Multipacting can be a limiting factor to the performance of in any superconducting structure. In the parallel-bar cavity the main contribution to the deflection is due to the transverse deflecting voltage, between the parallel bars, making the design potentially prone to multipacting. This paper presents the results of analytical calculations and numerical simulations of multipacting in the parallel-bar cavity with resonant voltage, impact energies and corresponding particle trajectories.

Book excerpt: As superconducting niobium radio-frequency (SRF) cavities approach fundamental material limits, there is increased interest in understanding the details of topographical influences on realized performance limitations. Micro-and nano-roughness are implicated in both direct geometrical field enhancements as well as complications of the composition of the 50 nm surface layer in which the super-currents flow. Interior surface chemical polishing (BCP/EP) to remove mechanical damage leaves surface topography, including pits and protrusions of varying sharpness. These may promote RF magnetic field entry, locally quenching superconductivity, so as to degrade cavity performance. A more incisive analysis of surface topography than the widely-used average roughness is needed. In this study, a power spectral density (PSD) approach based on Fourier analysis of surface topography data acquired by both stylus profilometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) is being used to distinguish the scale-dependent smoothing effects. The topographical evolution of the Nb surface as a function of different steps of EP is reported, resulting in a novel qualitative and quantitative description of Nb surface topography.

The physical and technical principles described in the book are substantiated with a wealth of experimental data on multipoles, persistent- and eddy-current effects, quench performance and much more.

Book excerpt: Superconducting niobium cavities used in particle accelerators are limited in their rf performance by two phenomena: quench field levels below the theoretical limit of the material caused by defects, and field emission loading resulting from artificial contamination of the superconducting surfaces during surface treatment and assembly procedures. In recent years, the community involved in SRF technology developments has successfully improved cavity performances by applying advanced surface treatment methods such as chemical polishing, electropolishing, tumbling, high temperature heat treatment, high pressure rinsing, ''in situ'' high peak power processing, and clean room assembly procedures. In addition, improvements in the material properties such as thermal conductivity by ''solid state'' gettering'' and very strict QA methods, both in material inspection and during cavity fabrication, have resulted in cavity performance levels of E{sub acc} up to 40 MV/m in monocells and gradients in the vicinity of 30 MV/m in multicell structures at Q-values of (almost equal to) 101° at a temperature of 2K. More recently the fabrication of ''seamless'' cavities by spinning is being pursued with encouraging results. This process eliminates electron beam welds, which sometimes are the causes of performance degradations.
