Book Air Transportation System Performance

Download or read book Air Transportation System Performance written by Yufeng Tu and published by VDM Verlag. This book was released on 2007 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. National Airspace System (NAS) is inherently highly stochastic. Yet, many existing decision-support tools for air traffic flow management take a deterministic approach to problem solving. This study aims to focus on the random and dynamic nature of flight departure delays to provide a more ac-curate picture of the airspace traffic situation, improve the prediction of the airspace congestion, and advance the level of decision making in aviation systems. Several models were proposed in this work based on the trends and patterns demonstrated by the delays. These models show reasonable goodness of fit, robustness to the choice of the model parameters, and good predictive capabilities. They could further advance the Enhanced Traffic Management System that is currently adopted by the Federal Aviation Administration. Mathematical algorithms used in this work can be adapted to similar pro-blems in other fields. The book is addressed to professionals and researchers in Air Transportations and Statistics.

Book Airport Delays and Metropolitan Employment

Download or read book Airport Delays and Metropolitan Employment written by Paulos Ashebir Lakew and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides the first empirical assessment of the impact airline delays have on urban employment. While previous works have suggested that road congestion can slow down regional development, the influence of air traffic delays on metro-level jobs has not been examined comprehensively. The present study uses a nine-year panel of quarterly data, which covers passenger airline traffic and delays at airports across urban areas in the United States. The panel also includes data on total and industry-specific employment at the metropolitan-area level. Our empirical estimates of the impact of air traffic on total employment are comparable to previously reported measures in the literature. However, we find that service-sector employment is less sensitive to air traffic than other studies suggested. We provide new evidence confirming that delays have a negative effect on employment, a finding that is robust to various specifications of our empirical model. Our results indicate that a 10 percent increase in the number of delayed flights leads to up to a 0.15 percent decrease in total and service-sector employment, a 0.47 percent decline in leisure and hospitality employment, and a 0.7 percent reduction in the employment level of goods-producing jobs.

Book Evaluating the Feasibility of Reliever and Floating Hub Concepts when a Primary Airline Hub Experiences Excessive Delays

Download or read book Evaluating the Feasibility of Reliever and Floating Hub Concepts when a Primary Airline Hub Experiences Excessive Delays written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. air transportation system is dominated by a network of large hub airports. When airline schedule disruptions occur, as a result of meteorological or technical disturbances, the entire national air transportation system can be substantially delayed. This study evaluated the feasibility of using an alternate or reliever hub to connect transfer passengers who otherwise would have flights delayed or canceled as a result of disturbances at the hub airport. The study developed criteria for selecting an alternate hub and evaluated the feasibility of using an alternate hub for the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. This study also developed a genetic algorithm for optimizing an alternate schedule of flights into and out of the alternate hub to minimize direct operating costs and passenger delay. Based upon a case study that used the Austin Bergstrom International Airport as an alternate hub for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the research concluded that it would be feasible and profitable to construct the necessary infrastructure to operate the alternate hub in Austin.

Book National Airspace System

Download or read book National Airspace System written by Gerald Dillingham and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. The national airspace system will become increasingly congested over time, imposing costs of delay on passengers and regions. While transforming the current air-traffic control system to the Next Generation Air Transport. System may provide additional en route capacity, many airports will still face constraints at their runways and terminals. This report evaluated regional airport planning (RAP) in metro regions with congested airports. The report: (1) identified which airports are currently or will be significantly congested and the potential benefits of RAP; (2) assessed how regions with congested airports use RAP in decision making; and (3) identified factors that hinder or aid in the development and implementation of RAP. Charts and tables.

Book Capacity of Airport Systems in Metropolitan Areas

Download or read book Capacity of Airport Systems in Metropolitan Areas written by M. A. Warskow and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since airports in metropolitan areas complement and interact with each other, they must be planned and operated as part of a system of airports. Furthermore, as air traffic continues to increase, more airports in metropolitan areas approach and reach capacity operation. Therefore, it is desirable to plan each airport in a metropolitan area as part of a system of airports in order to obtain the most efficient traffic flow, as well as the most efficient use of facilities. The operational factors involved in planning a system of airports in metropolitan areas are analyzed and used to determine the causes of congestion. Data obtained from previous studies is used to understand and demonstrate the operational factors and congestion. Airport congestion is defined in quantitative form for an individual airport and a system of airports. A methodology is presented that permits the many factors affecting the operation of an airport in a metropolitan system area to be evaluated quantitatively. The annual demand at which these airports will reach their practical annual capacity is determined by considering the effects of airport interactions and by determining quantitatively when congestion will occur at one airport and in the airport system.
