Book excerpt: A study was conducted to determine the effects of changing scale upon drag coefficients, filling time, peak opening force, and stability for single, unreefed textile parachute canopies. The investigation was confined to Flat Circular, Extended Skirt, Ringslot, Ribless Guide Surface, Circular Flat Ribbon, and Conical Ribbon parachutes operating in the subsonic flow regime at altitudes below 20,000 feet. As an integral part of the study, a survey of the existing literature and test data, a compilation of all pertinent data, and recommendations for future experimental investigations were made. Scaling equations with associated 95-percent confidence intervals were developed for the drag coefficient of the Flat Circular and Extended Skirt parachutes through the use of multiple regression analysis which the indicates the significant variables and their functional forms. Because the available data was poorly distributed, the equations will have to be used circumspectly to avoid misleading conclusions.

This report represents a first step in an attempt to catalog full scale experimental values from which, eventually, more exact analytical methods can be derived.

Book excerpt: In conjunction with the low-altitude preflight drop test phase of the NASA Supersonic High-Altitude Parachute Experiments (SHAPE) program, canopy-load-distributed measurements were made on each of three types of parachute during deployment (by means of a mortar) from an aircraft-dropped payload. Loads were measured with miniature load cells at various locations on the canopies and in the suspension lines of 30- and 40-foot-diameter (9.14 and 12.19 meters) parachutes, with a total of seven measurements of this type being made on each of seven instrumented parachute drops. Out of a total of 49 such individuual measurement attempts, there were six individual load-cell problems, which included one of lead-wire breakage during parachute deployment. Total parachute load measurements were also made during each test by means of a tensionmeter in the main riser line. In addition, for the total parachute instrumentation program, data from approximately 40 percent of the channels were not obtained due apparently to onboard telemetry malfunction.

Book excerpt: A reefed B.2-meter nominal-diameter (40-ft) disk-gap-band parachute was flight tested as part of the NASA Supersonic High Altitude Parachute Experiment (SHAPE) program. A three-stage rocket was used to drive an instrumented test payload to an altitude of 43.6 km (143 000 ft) and a Mach number of 2.58 where the parachute was deployed by means of a mortar. After a time delay of about 8.5 seconds, the parachute was disreefed at a Mach number of 0.99. The report contains an analysis of parachute inflation, drag, and stability for both the reefed and unreefed parts of the test. In addition, detailed descriptions of the test parachute, the reefing system, and the parachute packing procedurea are included.

The method is based on integration of axial and radial momentum equations developed in the paper. Axial and radial forces are assumed to be describable by drag and radial force coefficients. Computer solutions of the equations are compared to measured parachute loads and to parachute mouth and maximum diameters from tests of 23- and 76-ft diameter conical ribbon parachutes. Comparison of load histories indicated that snatch loads depend to a large extent on deployment bag design and packing influences. Computed loads and parachute size histories for the inflation process compared favorably with flight data. The concept of a radial force coefficient appears to have considerable merit as a means of computing inflation for most parachutes.

The 20-ft (6.1 m) parachute has been deployed at a dynamic pressure of 5700 lb/ft2 (27,800 kg/m2) at a Mach number of 2.43. Maximum loads, filling times, reefing, canopy weight/volume, and drag-areas are persented. Special ribbon and suspension line construction, packing, and deployment techniques are discussed.
