Book Mass Spectrometry of Priority Pollutants

Download or read book Mass Spectrometry of Priority Pollutants written by Brian Middleditch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the list of organic priority pollutants was first published, many mass spec troscopists went scrambling to their reference books. GC-MS was mandated for the analysis of 114 compounds, yet the spectra of many of them, if they had been recorded at all, were scattered throughout the literature. Moreover, it soon became apparent that, even if a sufficient number of instruments could be made available to undertake the task of monitoring 114 substances in the effluents of 21 categories of industry, the personnel could not be trained to perform the analyses and interpret the results. The solution to this problem has been the development of highly automated mass spectrometers which can be operated by personnel without the traditional research training. This book is for the new breed of mass spectroscopist who is not interested in the esoteric details of mass spectral fragmentation, but who merely wishes to identify specific pollutants in effluents. Our inclusion of com prehensive lists of synonyms and bibliographic data should make the book of even greater value to the reader who is not too familiar with the idiosyncrasies of chemical nomenclature and the scientific literature. The experienced mass spectroscopist should also benefit from having all of the data collected together in one volume. This is a book to be used, rather than deposited in a library distant from the laboratory: we would hope that it will fmd a place on top of every mass spectrometer used for the analysis of priority pollutants.

Book Mass Spectrometry in Environmental Analysis

Download or read book Mass Spectrometry in Environmental Analysis written by Valeria Severino and published by Arcler Press. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of pollutants in the environment is a matter of debate since longtime. People are always more aware of the problem that is mainly related to anthropogenic compounds, and analytical methods able to detect low-amount pollutants are required. These compounds are strictly regulated by worldwide legislations aimed to develop accurate environmental risk assessment. Overall, environmental analysis is aimed to monitor and detect levels of contaminants in the water, atmosphere, soils, and other environmental conditions. One of the main challenges in this kind of analysis relies on the extreme complexity and variability of the sample to be analyzed. Compounds of interest, in fact, can be present in various matrices deeply variable according to the origin of collected samples. Indeed, a reliable and versatile analytical approach is necessary to overcome these challenging problems.Mass spectrometry (MS) is a wide used analytical technique in which ionized chemical species are sorted on the basis of their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). MS is commonly used with qualitative and quantitative purposes, representing a high-performances instrument to be used in several fields. Moreover, mass spectrometers can be easily coupled to gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC), thus resulting in an excellent sensitive and selective tool to perform environmental analysis. Currently, MS-based methods are commonly used for environmental analyses allowing an accurate and reproducible identification and quantitation of a huge variety of pollutants, even in low amounts. This book covers several MS-based approaches for environmental analysis, illustrating a first overview of commonly used platforms followed by some interesting examples of applications. The Section 1 reports current trends in environmental analysis, highlighting the state-of-the-art of international legislations and future perspectives. The Section 2 is an overview of MS-based methods and platforms currently used for environmental analysis. MS-based metabolomics, lipidomics and other classical approaches, along with their features and limitations, are described. Moreover, some specific techniques such as the targeted parallel reaction monitoring, are included. Finally, the Section 3 contains recent and innovative applications of MS-based methods for environmental analysis. Among others, MS-based approaches have been used for the multiple screening of 90 emerging contaminants in liquid and solid environmental matrices, and for the detection of pollutants as alkanolamines, thallium and pesticides.

Book Mobile Field Monitoring of Volatile Organics and Toxic Air Pollutants Using a Mobile Tandem Mass Spectrometer System

Download or read book Mobile Field Monitoring of Volatile Organics and Toxic Air Pollutants Using a Mobile Tandem Mass Spectrometer System written by BI. Shushan and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent marriage of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) to mobile trace atmospheric gas analyzer (TAGA) technology has resulted in an analytical system capable of real-time direct air analysis for toxic air pollutants (TAP), volatile organic compounds (VOC), and odor compounds at concentrations as low as a few parts per trillion. This direct analytical approach obviates problems associated with conventional trapping methods. The latest design of a mobile MS/MS laboratory comprises a customized 9-m (30-ft) transit motor coach configured with a TAGA 6000EM MS/MS system and ancillary equipment. This paper discusses the incorporation of a sorbent cartridge purge unit into the TAGA system to assist in rapidly distinguishing between isomeric compounds (for example, ethylbenzene and xylene) using gas chromatography (GC/MS/MS. This paper also describes combining real-time TAP analysis with meteorological data to rapidly and accurately characterize plume profiles and emission frequencies. The mobility of the TAGA detector permitted the precise location of point source and fugitive emissions. Examples are provided for industrial emissions of methyl ethyl ketone and dimethyl sulfide. A simple method of on-site calibration was used, based upon headspace syringe injection. Under interactive computer control, calibration constants were determined in about 5 min per compound within the ambient air matrix. Other recent software developments are discussed, including the ability to simultaneously monitor up to 128 different compounds with real-time output in concentration units.
