Book Microstructural and Mechanical Characterization of Radiation Effects in Model Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Microstructural and Mechanical Characterization of Radiation Effects in Model Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels written by H-W Viehrig and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents results of radiation-induced nanoscale microstructural changes measured by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) on ASTM-type reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels. Five different base metals and one weld metal were investigated. The irradiation was performed in a VVER-type power reactor to three different dose levels, maximally 0.14 dpa, at an irradiation temperature of 255°C. The volume content of the micostructural features measured is correlated with the irradiation hardening and embrittlement.

Book Investigation of Neutron Irradiated Soviet type Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels by Small Angle Neutron Scattering

Download or read book Investigation of Neutron Irradiated Soviet type Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels by Small Angle Neutron Scattering written by G. Brauer and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reactor pressure vessel steels of the Soviet-type 15Kh2MFA (Cr-Mo-V steels) are used in the VVER-440 type reactors, whereas steels of the Soviet type 15Kh2NMFA (Ni-Cr-Mo-V steels) are used in the WER-1000 type reactors. Eleven different materials, i.e. seven base metals and two weld metals of the type 15Kh2MFA, as well as one base metal and one weld metal of the type 15Kh2NMFA were available for the investigations. The small angle neutron scattering technique using the SANS-2 facility at the FRG-1 reactor in Geesthacht was employed to study the radiation-induced defect microstructure in the as-irradiated materials. The results are discussed in terms of the influence of different impurity contents and irradiation conditions on the defect microstructure.

Book Microstructural Changes in Highly Irradiated 15Kh2MFA Steel

Download or read book Microstructural Changes in Highly Irradiated 15Kh2MFA Steel written by Andreas Ulbricht and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 15Kh2MFA-type steel forgings were irradiated in an accelerated surveillance position of a power reactor, up to about 1 x 1021n/cm2, E > 1 MeV with medium flux. This steel is a Cr-Mo-V-type low-copper reactor pressure vessel material. 15Kh2MFA was microstructurally tested as received and in three different irradiation states within the frame of the LONGLIFE project. The following microstructural tests were performed: metallography, fractography, transmission electron microscopy, small angle neutron scattering, and atom-probe tomography. The aim of the current paper is to summarize the results that were evaluated by the six European institutes performing the study. The SANS tests show that the cluster volume fraction growth is nearly linear as a function of the fluence, and atom-probe tomography concludes that vanadium carbide precipitations were already originally present in the as-received steel. During irradiation these precipitates are enriched with Mo, Cu, and Cr. At the highest dose Mn, Si, and Ni are also attached to these clusters.

Book Evolution of the Microstructure of PWR Pressure Vessel Steels from the CHOOZ A Reactor Surveillance Program After Long Term Irradiations

Download or read book Evolution of the Microstructure of PWR Pressure Vessel Steels from the CHOOZ A Reactor Surveillance Program After Long Term Irradiations written by J. Bourgoin and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have studied the microstructural evolution of a pressure vessel steel (C shell base metal) irradiated in CHOOZ A reactor surveillance capsules. This material has been irradiated at 265°C with fluences ranging from 2.2 x 1019 to 14 x 1019 n • cm-2 (E > 1 MeV); the longest irradiation has lasted about 13 years. The maximum ?RTNDT measured is 145°C for a fluence of 9 x 1019 n • cm-2 (E > 1 MeV). The microstructural studies have been carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS).

Book Small Angle Neutron Scattering Study of Irradiated Martensitic Steels

Download or read book Small Angle Neutron Scattering Study of Irradiated Martensitic Steels written by M-H Mathon and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martensitic/ferritic steels (containing 7-13 % Cr) are candidate materials for internal structures in pressurized water, fast breeder, and fusion reactors. Approval for use requires verification of structural stability under neutron irradiation in relation to the evolution of mechanical properties. In this context, several conventional and Reduced Activation (RA) martensitic materials were neutron irradiated at 325°C up to 6 dpa. They were investigated by Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) under a magnetic field after various doses.

Book Microstructure of the Neutron Irradiated VVER type Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Microstructure of the Neutron Irradiated VVER type Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels written by I. Procházka and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional transmission electron microscopy has been used to investigate the radiation-induced changes in the microstructure of VVER-type RPV steels. Specimens irradiated at ? 270 °C temperature in both the power light-water reactor (surveillance specimens) and the research reactor have been studied. In addition, the microstructure of the thermally aged specimens was analyzed too. Microstructural analysis has been supplemented by some preliminary results of the Doppler broadening and lifetime positron annihilation measurements.

Book An Analysis of Radiation Effects in Model A533B Pressure Vessel Steels Containing Copper Phosphorus and Nickel Additions

Download or read book An Analysis of Radiation Effects in Model A533B Pressure Vessel Steels Containing Copper Phosphorus and Nickel Additions written by JT. Buswell and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An existing database of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) spectra on a series of model A533B alloys containing various copper, phosphorus or nickel additions, before and after 290°C neutron irradiation to 3.1x1023 n.m-2 (E>1 MeV), is re-analysed using a Maximum Entropy computing procedure. Volume fraction -- particle size and number density data are produced for each alloy to characterize the irradiation-induced microstructural changes in terms of microvoids and/or precipitates of different sizes. The calculations are further refined by introducing a compositional dependence to the irradiation-induced precipitates, assumed to be of the type CuNiMn. The derived particle size distributions are characterized by narrow sharp peaks at ~2 nm diameter and broader peaks in the range 10-40 nm diameter. The analysis suggests that under irradiation the total volume fraction of precipitates increases with phosphorus content, and that there is an increase in volume fraction with increase in both copper and nickel content at constant phosphorus level. Most of the volume fraction increase in low-P steels arises from 1-4 nm diameter precipitates, whilst for high-P steels there is evidence of a significant increase in 4-50 nm diameter precipitates. Estimates of radiation hardening based on input of the SANS data into hardening models are in accord with measured values.

Book Microstructural Aspects of Irradiation Damage in A508 Gr 4N Forging Steel

Download or read book Microstructural Aspects of Irradiation Damage in A508 Gr 4N Forging Steel written by RJ. Stofanak and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron irradiation can promote significant changes in the microstructure and associated mechanical properties of low alloy steels. In particular, irradiation can induce the formation of non-equilibrium phases and segregation, which may lead to a degradation in toughness. In this study, the microstructural changes caused by neutron irradiation have been characterized in A508 Grade (Gr) 4N-type steels (~3.5% Ni) using a variety of state-of-the-art analytical techniques including 3D-Atom Probe Field-Ion Microscopy and Small Angle Neutron Scattering, along with post-irradiation annealing studies combining Positron Annihilation Lineshape Analysis and hardness measurements. Important differences between conventional and "superclean" A508 Gr 4N steel have been identified in this investigation. The data indicate that Ni is not the controlling factor in the irradiation damage behavior of these materials; rather, the Mn content of the steel is a dominant factor in the irradiation-induced microstructural development of solute-related hardening features.
