Book Large Space Structures Dynamics and Control

Download or read book Large Space Structures Dynamics and Control written by S.N. Atluri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is intended to provide a snapshot of the status and opportunities for advan cement in the technologies of dynamics and control oflarge flexible spacecraft structures. It is a reflection ofthe serious dialog and assessments going on all over the world, across a wide variety of scientific and technical disciplines, as we contemplate the next major milestone in mankind's romance with space: the transition from exploration and experimentation to commercial and defense exploitation. This exploitation is already in full swing in the space communications area. Both military and civilian objectives are being pursued with increasingly more sophisticated systems such as large antenna reflectors with active shape control. Both the NATO and Warsaw pact alliances are pursuing permanent space stations in orbit: large structural systems whose development calls for in-situ fabrication and/or assembly and whose operation will demand innovations in controls technology. The last ten years have witnessed a fairly brisk research activity in the dynamics and control oflarge space structures in orderto establish a technology base forthe development of advanced spacecraft systems envisioned for the future. They have spanned a wide spectrum of activity from fundamental methods development to systems concept studies and laboratory experimentation and demonstrations. Some flight experiments have also been conducted for various purposes such as the characterization of the space enviroment, durability of materials and devices in that environment, assembly and repair operations, and the dynamic behavior of flexible structures. It is this last area that has prompted this monogram.

Book Analysis for Robotic Assembly of Large Flexible Space Structures

Download or read book Analysis for Robotic Assembly of Large Flexible Space Structures written by Vickram Suresh Mangalgiri and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space solar power is a renewable, environment-friendly alternative to satisfy future terrestrial power needs. Space solar power stations will need to have large dimensions (on the order of hundreds of meters) to be able to collect enough power to make them cost effective. It will be infeasible to transport these large structures, fully assembled, from earth to space, or use human astronauts for their construction in space, leaving robotic assembly as the only viable option. The focus of the current work is to identify potential challenges to the large structure assembly process in space and develop methods to address them. One of the major causes of failure in the assembly process would be dimensional mismatch between the two structures to be joined. The first part of this thesis analyses the static and dynamic effects on a typical large space structure using finite element models and predicts the deformation that the structure will undergo due to thermal and vibration effects in space. Forced assembly methods using cooperative robots are developed to compensate for these dimensional errors. The second part of the thesis deals with the application of forced assembly methods to representative assembly scenarios. The scenarios are categorized based on the nature of the deformation involved. The differences between the use of thrusters and manipulators by robots are discussed and assembly plans are developed for each scenario using either or both types of actuators. A genetic algorithm based planner is developed and implemented to optimize the assembly process within the limits of the assumptions made.

Book Modeling Analysis and Optimization Issues for Large Space Structures

Download or read book Modeling Analysis and Optimization Issues for Large Space Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document contains the proceedings of the Air Force/NASA Workshop on Modeling, Analysis, and Optimization Issues for Large Space Structures held in Williamsburg, Virginia, May 13-14 1982. The theme of the workshop was modeling, analysis, and optimization of large space structures, including structure control interaction. Speakers were drawn primarily from industry, with participation from universities and government. The workshop was organized into three sessions: mathematical modeling, analysis methodology, and optimization for controllability. Results of the workshop were discussed in a final session. The workshop presentations ranged over many topics in large space structures, including structure-control interaction, structural and structural dynamics modeling, thermal analysis, testing, design, and optimization. The interdisciplinary area of structure-control interaction, which is a challenge to analysts, designers, and test engineers, was clearly emphasized. Not addressed in the workshop was the important subject of structural deployment.
