This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Paragraph History of the American Revolution This little book extends to the American Revo lution the method which, in A Paragraph History of the United States, was applied to the history of the continent and nation entire. To those who are familiar with the struggle of the Colonies for independence, it will perhaps seem more remark able for what it omits than useful for what it con tains. But it is not intended for those who are familiar with that struggle for such rather as have never read a history proper, or who have heard only by chance and uncertain mention what our country's fathers did, and in these busy cen tennial times have only moments by the way in which to trace the outline. I hear that the Para graph History of the United States has gone into a school here and there as a text-book: possibly this, too, may serve as an incentive and directory to that broader, deeper, fuller study which should hold a first place in the attention of every Ameri can, old and young. Book The American Revolution

Download or read book The American Revolution written by John Lauris Blake and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Revolution: Including Also the Beauties of American History The following Anecdotes were principally selected by a youth of twelve years of age. Having had constant access to a library well supplied with books on History and Biography, he early acquired a taste for reading such works; and the present small volume is one of the results of such an attention to this species of literature. The selection was made at intervals between hours of devotion to elementary and classical study; and may hence be viewed as having been rather an amusement, than a labor of painful toil and research. The utility of compilations like the present is too well known to require particular commendation. They are always read with avidity, if well made; being usually preferred to the most fascinating kinds of fiction; and what is far more important, they are among the most beneficial books to be found. They almost invariably create a taste for reading history and biography. Good anecdotes in these literary regions are analogous to the precious stones found in the bosom of the earth; which, though sparsely scattered, will long be sought with the most cheerful and untiring assiduity. A single case of success may cheer on the fond and enthusiastic votary of these deeply hid treasures, even for months, amidst nothing but the mere rubbish that contains them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic History of the American Revolution To guard against misapprehension, it is proper to say, that in this attempt to present in a new and interesting light the history of our struggle for national existence, there is nothing of fanciful embellishment. I hold in just aversion the to mancing trash under which, at the present day, the simple and picturesque - because simple - realities of our American story seem in danger of being buried. Not only has no aid of fiction been employed, but no traditional matter has been introduced, unless sustained by indisputable authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Days of Washington: A Story of the American Revolution Cornelius De Vries, a well-to-do and retired merchant, occupied a broad-armed chair at one Side of the table that stood in the middle of the room. He was a very stately old gentleman of sixty, with a clean-shaven and wrinkled face. He wore a wig, black stockings, a coat and vest of broadcloth, and low Shoes with Silver buckles. His features betrayed his Dutch origin, as did also the long-stemmed pipe he was smoking, and the glass of Holland schnapps at his elbow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of the American Revolution: As Revealed in the Poetry of the Period, a Study of American Patriotic Verse From 1760 to 1783 Some works have seemed to merit rather full quotation by reason either of their intrinsic literary worth or of their importance in connection with the event that inspired their composition or of the fact that omission of any part would impair their substance or their effect. Loyalist poetry has not been overlooked but has been made to lend an edge to the conflict of opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rereading the Revolution

Download or read book Rereading the Revolution written by Benjamin S. Lawson and published by Popular Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately fifty historical novels dealing with the American Revolution were published in the United States in the single ten-year period from 1896 to 1906. Benjamin Lawson critically examines the narrative strategies employed in these many novels, the ways in which fiction is made to serve the purpose of vivifying national history. The British conventions of the historical romance in one sense seem to preclude radical declarations of literary independence even in books purportedly about a war against Britain. Working within the formula, these many writers nonetheless created fictional plots which parallel and reflect the enveloping concerns of the War for Independence. Just as the war was sometimes viewed as an Anglo-American family squabble, these metaphorical narratives depict familial and love interests.

Book Sovereignty in the American Revolution

Download or read book Sovereignty in the American Revolution written by Claude H. Van Tyne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sovereignty in the American Revolution: An Historical Study Up to this point we have been studying historically the ideas which men had during the American Revolution as to the nature of Congress, the state governments, and the powers of each. If the ideas and wishes 'of men were what the submitted facts and arguments seem to show, there could have been no common will demanding the creation of a national state. But this is the assertion made by the exponents of the sovereign Congress. A consciousness of nationality no doubt there was, because geographical position, laws, manners, history, and prevailing language2 all combined to that end, but it is a mistake to confuse the idea of nationality with that of the state. National consciousness may exist, as it did in the minds of the people of Germany and Italy, before a national state was created. The people dwelling in the loosely confederated states of Germany before 1866 were people of the same race 3 their eco nomic interests were quite as unified as were those of America in 1776, and their several governments were alike in character, but Germany had no central government endowed with sovereign powers, and there was no common will demanding the creation of a national state. This I conceive to have been the condition in America until the trying experiences of the period of the Confedera tion4 taught a majority of Americans, what a few had long seen, that the whole logic of the situation demanded the creation of a national state. Even then it was only with a grudging hand that the essen tials of sovereignty were granted to the government created by the Federal Constitution, and in so dubious a manner, that men have dis puted ever since as to whether a national state actually did then come into existence. Download or read book The American Revolution Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by John Fiske and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 In the course of my work as assistant librarian of Harvard University, about seventeen years ago, I had occasion to overhaul what we used to call the "American Room," and to superintend or revise the cataloguing of some thousands of titles of volumes and pamphlets relating to America. In the course of this work my attention was called more and more to sundry problems and speculations connected with the transplantation of European communities to American soil, their development under the new conditions, and the effect of all this upon the general progress of civilization. The study of aboriginal America itself presented many other interesting problems. In 1879, 1881, and 1882, I gave courses of lectures at the Old South Meeting-House in Boston, in aid of the fund for the preservation of that venerable building, and in pursuance of Mrs. Hemenway's scheme for making it a place for the teaching of American history. As to the success of that scheme we may now speak with some satisfaction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Modern History, From the Irruption of the Northern Nations to the Close of the American Revolution Nothing so much embarrasses a student, who is beginning the study of history, as the difficulty he finds in selecting the best authors, ascertaining their intrinsic and relative merits, and in marking out for himself the most profitable course of reading. He is bewildered, amidst a multitude of books, and perpetually at a loss, as he proceeds, to determine the comparative importance of periods, events, and characters. If he seeks a guide, he is either met by a dry catalogue of authors, arranged with little discrimina tion, or referred to abridgments and abstracts, as destitute of the soul and substance of history, properly so called, as a skeleton is of the Spirit and proportions of a living man. His time is thus lost and his patience exhausted, while he makes scarcely any progress in those acquisitions which it is the design of history to communi cate, and by which the mind should be expanded and strengthened at the same time that it is enriched with facts. Book History of the American Revolution

Download or read book History of the American Revolution written by Samuel Farmer Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Revolution: With a Preliminary View of the Character and Principles of the Colonists, and Their Controversies With Great Britain Tan first intention of the writer of this book was to prepare an abstract of some one of the larger histories of the American Revolution, in a more compact form than any which he had met with in his own reading. The object was to present a convenient volume, which should embrace all the principal occurrences, civil, military, and political, in America and Europe, having a direct influence on the principles and progress of the revolutionary contest, ' at the same time that it should avoid all minor details not positively necessary to the continuity or integrity of the narrative. The military events were to be made less pro minent than is usual; and all circumstantial accounts of battles and mance es in the field, beyond leading incidents important for the understanding of the issue, were to be avoided. After examining several of the principal authorities, the design of following any particular author was abandoned, and the present plan adopted, of te-writing and re-arranging the Whole, without regard to the order or language of previous histories. These are the claims of the work to originality. Its merits are submitted to the judgment of the public. The writer has diligently compared the received authorities, and exercised his judgment freely in selecting and arranging the essential facts; and he thinks he has brought within the compass of a volume convenient for popular use, a connected narrative of the revolution, em bracing all the principal events - foreign and domestic. Those portions which relate to the foreign negotiations, are more full in proportion, than the other divisions of the sub ject. They will be found, it is behaved, correct and valuable. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Virginia Committee System and the American Revolution This study of the Virginia committee system in its rela tionship to the American Revolution has been made in the main from source material, much of which has been utilized by writers who have studied these committees as isolated units rather than as parts of a well developed system. The author believes that an institutional and historical continu ity runs through the committee system of the Virginia legis lature, and that these committees are connected in a vital and intimate way with the so - called revolutionary commit tees of the transition period from colony to commonwealth. To show the continuity, to explain the organization of the committees of the Virginia House of Burgesses, and to show their part in the calling of the first Continental Con gress is the purpose of this study. It was at first intended to include the results of an investigation of the so-called revolutionary committees (the Virginia Committee of Safety and the local committees) but any adequate treat ment of these organizations would have carried this study far beyond the usual limits of a dissertation. I have fol lowed out the activities of these committees and hope soon to publish my findings as a continuation of this study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beverly Privateers in the American Revolution The harbor was for vessels of the size used in those days, a safe, convenient and fairly deep one. In the harbor between the Point and the site of the bridge now connecting Beverly and Salem lay the wharves, the first, counting from the ocean side, Union wharf, now Guffey's, next Bartlett's and Glover's, later occupied by Colonel Israel Thorndike. At the head of this wharf on Water Street was a large storehouse with an archway entrance from the street. Next Lovett's and Standley's wharf, then Stephen Nourse's wharf, later occupied by Nourse Stephens, next followed in order, Pickard and Woodbury's, J. H. Morgan's, Foster and Lovett's, Picket's, Ober's now Preston's, Deacon John Safford's, and Distillery wharf. There were also a few wharves in Bass River, used during the war for captured prizes. At the head of the wharves and along Water Street were the warehouses of the Beverly merchants, and along the shore from the Point toward the Cove were the fish akes where the salted cod were dried in the sun. Most of the merchants and im porters did a retail as well as wholesale business, selling to the fisher men, salt, nets, lines and clothing, and exchanging dress goods, rum, sugar, linen and our for fish, grain, lumber and country produce. Prior to the Revolutionary War Beverly was essentially a fishing village and all its commerce was based on this staple. In 1772 the fishing eet consisted of 30 vessels of the following ownership, tonnage and value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
