Book Analysis of Ground Motion Peak Particle Velocities from Cratering Experiments at Trinidad Colorado

Download or read book Analysis of Ground Motion Peak Particle Velocities from Cratering Experiments at Trinidad Colorado written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes all peak-particle-velocity measurements obtained during the high explosive detonations at Trinidad, Colorado, during 1970-71, and provides an empirical analysis of these velocities. Relationships are extablished that make possible predictions for this locality of peak particle velocity as a function of the explosive yield, the scaled depth of burial of the charges, and the distance between surface ground zero and the point of interest. These relationships were obtained from a statistical analysis of the measurements.

Book Multiple Threat Cratering Experiment Volume Ii Ground Motion in Rock

Download or read book Multiple Threat Cratering Experiment Volume Ii Ground Motion in Rock written by John H. Gee and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ground motion portion of this experiment was intended to study the particle velocities, strain, accelerations, displacement, and propagation characteristics of a hard rock medium. Forty-eight gages placed in three bore holes were used to measure the ground motion of eleven shots of the MTCE series. Nine of the shots were 4,000-lb spheres with the remaining two being a 16,000-lb sphere and a 16,000-lb hemisphere. The depth of burial ranged from surface tangent to fully buried. Due to problems involving gage calibrations, gage placement and orientation, and electrical transients, only arrival times and some down-hole magnitude measurements provided enough data for comment. The arrival times indicate that the direct transmitted ground shock outran the air blast. Seismic velocities varied by as much as 3500 fps between the north and south sections of the test area. A further difference in velocity was noted to be connected to a 31-foot difference in elevation between the north and south holes. The up-slope velocity for any given area appears to average approximately 450 fps slower than its down-slope equivalent. (Author).

Book Project Pre GONDOLA I

Download or read book Project Pre GONDOLA I written by J. Donald Day and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this project were to measure and analyze the particle velocities, soil stresses, and port water pressures produced by denotation of 20 tons of nitromethane in saturated clay-shale. The ground range of primary interest was 85 to 375 feet from surface ground zero with most instruments placed at shot depth (46.3 feet). Peak stresses were greater than estimated at the close-in locations (8,000 to 12,000 psi measured vs 5,000 psi predicted) and attenuated as the -2 power with distance. Particle velocities were consistently higher than predictions based on experience in other media. High amplitude transient pore pressures were produced by the explosion. Residual excess pore water pressures tended to drop off slowly with time.

Book Project Pre GONDOLA II A Wet Medium 140 Ton Row Charge Cratering Experiment in Varying Terrain Close In Ground Motion and Earth Stress

Download or read book Project Pre GONDOLA II A Wet Medium 140 Ton Row Charge Cratering Experiment in Varying Terrain Close In Ground Motion and Earth Stress written by Charles E. Joachim and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress, particle velocity, and acceleration data were obtained from a 140-ton nitromethane row-charge detonation in a saturated clay-shale. The charge row consisted of two 40- and three 20-ton spheres (first and fourth charges were 40 tons) extending S 11 W from the Pre-GONDOLA I Charlie crater on an 80-foot spacing (first charge 105 feet from crater center). The primary instrument line (stress and particle velocity gages) extended S 79 E from the center charge (G) with gage stations 100, 150, 200, 300, and 400 feet from G. Gage depths were 10 and 50 feet except the 400-foot station which was gaged at 50 feet only. Acceleration measurements were made on the slopes of the Pre-GONDOLA I Delta and Charlie craters and at the Control Point (CP).

Book Experimental Evaluation of Cratering and Ground Vibration in Clay Soils Subjected to Explosive Airblast Loading

Download or read book Experimental Evaluation of Cratering and Ground Vibration in Clay Soils Subjected to Explosive Airblast Loading written by Courtney L. Busch and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on the ground response of clay soils in confined conditions subjected to explosive airblast loading through small-scale field experiments. Laboratory testing was also performed to characterize the soils used during field testing and obtain material properties for future work. A total of 33 suspended explosive blasts were conducted with explosive masses ranging from 0.9 to 100.9 g and two heights of suspension of 2.5-7.6 cm above the clay surface. The field instrumentation consisted of subsurface triaxial geophones and surface airblast sensors. Results of the study included surface crater geometry measurements, ground vibration data, and air overpressure data. Crater diameters ranged from 3.8 to 22.9 cm, while crater depth ranged from 0.8 to 8.4 cm. Crater volumes ranged from 32.1 to 1720.6 cm3. Peak particle velocity (PPV) decreased with depth and ranged from 1.0 to 40.2 cm/s. The results of the experiment provided a data set that could be used to predict the effects of airblast loads on clay soils.

Acceleration measurements were made on the slopes of the Pre-GONDOLA I Delta and Charlie craters and at the Control Point (CP) Peak stress measurements were higher than Pre-GONDOLA I data. As the charge-to-gage distance increased, the individual compressional waves from the various charges began to coalesce. The resulting stresses (coalesced wave) scale using combined charge weights and cube root scaling. Initial peak horizontal velocity compares well with Pre-GONDOLA I data. Similar to stress, velocities resulting from the coalesced shock front scale using cube root. A low-amplitude, long-duration acceleration was recorded at the Delta and Charlie craters. The fractured crater material filtered out the high-frequency, high-amplitude motions anticipated at the crater slope and lowered the average propagation velocities. CP accelerations compare well with predictions based on competent media.
