Those commercial banks taken for comparison were Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Dashen Bank Share Company, Bank of Abyssinia, United Bank, Wegagen Bank, and Nib International Bank. Year of establishment, amount of capital reserve, and number of branches are taken as a criterion for selecting these commercial banks for analysis purpose. In addition to data gathered from secondary sources, unstructured interview was conducted on problem and prospects related to the financial performance of commercial banks and the responses were presented. The respective ratios of each bank are compared with the average ratios of the six commercial banks taken for the study. Then trend analyses of six commercial banks taken in this study are presented by using the above ratios. In both the financial performance analysis approaches i.e., the trend and comparative analysis, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) showed good performance in financial ratios of Profitability, Liquidity, and Solvency ratio, but Bank of Abyssinia(BOA) has showed weak performance in all above explained financial ratios. From this, it is concluded that CBE was profitable and functionally efficient and BOA is less profitable and the earning capacity of the bank is weak. Therefore, in order to improve profitability the management of BOA must increase management efficiency by reducing administrative expenses to the best possible level, efficiently control costs and utilize customers deposit, dispose of the assets which are not contributing for the profitability of the banks and work to maximize the overall profitability of the bank through investing in profitable avenue.

Scholars argue that judging by the poor economic development of the informal sector, not much progress seems to have been achieved, despite government efforts to promote SME activity. Some of the key factors attributed to this poor performance is access to financial services. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of commercial banks in economic development of SMEs Normally, SMES play vital and significant contributors to economic development through their critical role in providing job opportunities and reducing poverty levels, an estimated number of up to 40% of the start-ups SMEs fail by year 2 and at least 60% close their doors by year 4. This menace is attributed to poor financial management among small businesses. Accessing credit is a major constraint to the economic development and growth of SMEs and also to poor rural and urban households. This is mainly due to the behavior of lenders in terms of hedging against borrowers’ risks by demanding collateral, which they lack, and also information asymmetry.

Book Prudential Liquidity Regulation in Developing Countries

Download or read book Prudential Liquidity Regulation in Developing Countries written by Sarah Sanya and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyses the prudential liquidity management framework, in particular the quantitative indicators employed by the central bank of Rwanda in response to the domestic liquidity crisis in 2008/09. It emphasises that the quantitative methods used in the monitoring and assessment of systemic liquidity risk are inadequate because they did not signal the liquidity crises ex-post. There are quick gains to be made from augumenting the liquidity risk indicators with more dynamic liquidity stress tests so that compliance will be achieved through lengthening the maturities of both assets and liabilities on the balance sheet as opposed to simply holding more liquid assets. The paper recommends that policy emphasis shift toward reforms that strengthen systemic liquidity risk assesment, monetary policy implementation as well as improve the efficiency of Rwanda's financial system.

Book The Impact of Income Sources Diversification on Bank Performance

Download or read book The Impact of Income Sources Diversification on Bank Performance written by Mudesir Kasim and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 3.5, , language: English, abstract: The general objective of this study is to investigate the impact of income source diversification on financial performance of commercial banks in Ethiopia. Commercial banks in Ethiopia are currently facing competition from non-bank institutions entry into the activities which was in the past only role of banks. Therefore, banks started searching new income sources rather than focusing only traditional inter-mediation income generating activities. Thus, this study was to examine the impact of income sources diversification on bank performance in case of some selected commercial banks in Ethiopia by using panel data over the period 2010-2015. The study used secondary data collected mainly from each sampled banks annual report financial statements. Since the data is secondary in nature, quantitative approach was adopted. This data was analyzed by using STATA version 12 and Microsoft Excel. Fixed effect model was used, since this model is preferred than the random effect model based on the hausman specification test. Return on asset (ROA) was used as dependent variable while income diversification (Div) as independent variable with control variables such as bank size (BS) in terms of total assets, equity/ assets ratio (EAR), loan/asset ratio (LAR) and expense/income ratio (Exp). The findings of the study show that the level of diversification has a positive impact on financial performance of Ethiopian commercial banks. In addition, the study also revealed that EAR, LAR and BS had positive impact on financial performance while Exp had negative impact. The results of the study are important for bankers to understand how income diversification affects the performance of banks. Therefore, the study recommended that banks should diversify their sources of income into interest and non-interest as well as reduce operating expense in effective way, so as to enhance their performance (ROA).

Book Relationship Between Risk Committee Existence and Financial Performance of Commercial Banks in Kenya

Download or read book Relationship Between Risk Committee Existence and Financial Performance of Commercial Banks in Kenya written by Raymond Kipyegon Kemboi and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance of some banks in Kenya has been declining leading to their collapse or receivership. This may be attributed to many factors such as risk exposure. In bid to protect the financial sector, Central Bank of Kenya therefore directed all the banks to manage risks. One of the mechanisms used by the banks to manage risks is risk committee. Some banks established risk committees while others did not. There is limited knowledge on the relationship between this risks committee and financial performance in commercial banks. This study therefore aimed at determining the relationship between risk committee existence and financial performance of commercial banks. The target population was all commercial banks operating in Kenya. The study adopted longitudinal research design that covered a period of five years (2013-2017). The study used secondary data extracted from annual consolidated and financial reports. Information on specific financial performance indicator was RoA (return on assets) and risk committee existence was extracted from annual reports. Data was analyzed using SPSS by way of regression analysis. The study found that there is a significant positive relationship between risk committee existence and financial performance where the coefficient was r=0.299. The results showed that the model explained 9% (R2 = 0.09, Adjusted R2 = 0.1084, F (1) = 17.301, p=0.000, p˂0.05). This shows that 9 percent in the variations of RoA can be explained by risk committee existence. From the results, it is evident that risk committee existence and RoA have a significant positive relationship. The study recommends that commercial banks should fully implement risk committees in their operations. This will help the commercial banks to manage risk exposure and improve their financial performance.

Book excerpt: This book analyzes evolution of monetary policy in Rwanda since it was first implemented by the National Bank of Rwanda in 1964 when the bank was established. It contributes to the understanding of monetary policy which is formulation and implementation in different stages of development of a financial system that comprises the financial market (money market and capital market), financial intermediaries such as commercial banks, and the financial sector infrastructures such as payment systems and the credit reference bureau. The book breaks down applied empirical research on the assessment of key assumptions of a monetary targeting framework, namely the stability of money multiplier and money demand using econometrics of time series, through a number of case studies. Presenting a detailed empirical analysis of the monetary transmission mechanism, one of the most analyzed topics in central banks in advanced economies, this book is a valuable read for central bankers and other researchers of monetary policy, particularly in developing economies.
