Book excerpt: In this study, we capture the moderating effect of aggressive driving behavior while assessing the influence of a comprehensive set of variables on injury severity. In doing so, we are able to account for the indirect effects of variables on injury severity through their influence on aggressive driving behavior, as well as the direct effect of variables on injury severity. The methodology used in this study to accommodate the moderating effect of aggressive driving behavior takes the form of two models -- one for aggressive driving and another for injury severity. These are appropriately linked to obtain the indirect and direct effects of variables. The data for estimation is obtained from the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study (NMVCCS). From an empirical standpoint, we consider a fine age categorization until 20 years of age when examining age effects on aggressive driving behavior and injury severity. There are several important results from the empirical analysis. Young drivers (especially novice drivers between 16-17 years of age), drivers who are not wearing seat belt, under the influence of alcohol, not having a valid license, and driving a pickup are found to be most likely to behave aggressively. Situational, vehicle, and roadway factors such as young drivers traveling with young passengers, young drivers driving an SUV or a pick-up truck, driving during the morning rush hour, and driving on roads with high speed limits are also found to trigger aggressive driving behavior. In terms of vehicle occupants, the safest situation from a driver injury standpoint is when there are 2 or more passengers in the vehicle, at least one of whom is above the age of 20 years. These and many other results are discussed, along with implications of the result for graduated driving licensing (GDL) programs.

Book excerpt: Arterial roads constitute the majority of the centerline miles of the Florida State Highway System. Severe injury involvements on these roads account for a quarter of the total severe injuries reported statewide. This research focuses on driver injury severity analysis of statewide multilane high speed arterials using crash data for the years 2002 to 2004. The first goal is to test different ways of analyzing crash data (by road entity and crash types) and find the best method of driver injury severity analysis. A second goal is to find driver, vehicle, road and environment related factors that contribute to severe involvements on multilane arterials. Exploratory analysis using one year of crash data (2004) using binary logit regression was used to measure the risk of driver severe injury given that a crash occurs. A preliminary list of significant factors was obtained. A massive data preparation effort was undertaken and a random sample of multivehicle crashes was selected for final analysis. The final injury severity analysis consisted of six road entity models and twenty crash type models. The data preparation and sampling was successful in allowing a robust dataset. The overall model was a good candidate for the analysis of driver injury severity on multilane high speed roads. Driver injury severity resulting from angle and left turn crashes were best modeled by separate non-signalized intersection crash analysis. Injury severity from rear end and fixed object crashes was best modeled by combined analysis of pure segment and non-signalized intersection crashes. The most important contributing factors found in the overall analysis included driver related variables such as age, gender, seat belt use, at-fault driver, physical defects and speeding. Crash and vehicle related contributing factors included driver ejection, collision type (harmful event), contributing cause, type of vehicle and off roadway crash. Multivehicle crashes and interactions with intersection and off road crashes were also significant. The most significant roadway related variables included speed limit, ADT per lane, access class, lane width, roadway curve, sidewalk width, non-high mast lighting density, type of friction course and skid resistance. The overall model had a very good fit but some misspecification symptoms appeared due to major differences in road entities and crash types by land use. Two additional models of crashes for urban and rural areas were successfully developed. The land use models' goodness of fit was substantially better than any other combination by road entity or the overall model. Their coefficients were substantially robust and their values agreed with scientific or empirical principles. Additional research is needed to prove these results for crash type models found most reliable by this investigation. A framework for injury severity analysis and safety improvement guidelines based on the results is presented. Additional integration of road characteristics (especially intersection) data is recommended for future research. Also, the use of statistical methods that account for correlation among crashes and locations are suggested for use in future research.

Book excerpt: There are approximately 240,000 highway-rail grade crossings in the United States and highway-rail grade crossing areas have been considered in this study as these are locations where crashes frequently occur. Existing studies on crash models at highway- rail grade crossings can be classified into two categories: accident frequency prediction models and driver injury severity models. Accident frequency prediction at highway-rail grade crossings have been investigated by previous studies using varied statistical models. Few studies, however, have focused on driver injury severity studies. Three drawbacks will be addressed in this research including limitations in traditional highway- rail grade crossings studies, limited models to study driver injury severity, and the relatively small databases. Three driver injury severity models are developed including overall model, driver injury severity model with respect to control devices, and driver injury severity model with respect to age and gender. Based on the model study, it is found that older drivers are more susceptible than younger drivers to cause an increase in severity, an increase in severity under bad weather condition, and improving highway pavement will significantly reduce driver injury severity at passive control highway-rail grade crossings, etc.

Given the specific nature of a work zone (complex arrangements of traffic control devices and signs, narrow lanes, duration) a number of crashes occur with varying severities involving different vehicle sizes. This dissertation proposes a comprehensive discrete choice analysis of injury severity of crashes in work zones on both the crash and occupant levels, in roadway work zones through a comprehensive set of discrete choice econometric frameworks. Robust discrete choice modeling structures are introduced and applied in the field of work zone safety. This dissertation contains three (3) studies representing the empirical analysis conducted to address the following research questions:1. What factors may contribute to the injury severity levels of large-truck crashes in work zones? And what are the robust analytical methods to recognize such factors?2. How do specific work zone configurations affect factors contributing to the levels of injury severity of work zone crashes?3. How does the specific work zone-component-area where a crash has occurred affect factors contributing to the injury severity levels of work zone crashes?The first study investigates the causal factors contributing to injury severity of large truck crashes in work zones. The second study investigates the causal factors contributing to the injury severity of passenger-car occupants for crashes occurring in different work zone configurations (lane closure, lane shift/crossover, shoulder/median, intermittent, and other). The third study investigates the causal factors contributing to driver & rsquo;s injury severity in the different work zone component-areas (advance-warning, transition, activity, and termination areas). The first study compares a comprehensive set of discrete choice modeling structures; Multinomial Logit (MNL) model, Nested Logit (NL) model, Ordered Logit (ORL) model and Generalized Ordered Response Logit (GORL) model. The second and third studies developed the Mixed Generalized Ordered Response Probit (MGORP) modeling framework to conduct the proposed analysis to answer the second and third research questions. The empirical analysis was conducted using work zone crash database in 10 years of the Highway Safety Information System (HSIS).

Book excerpt: "The objective of the dissertation is to develop advanced econometric frameworks to address methodological gaps in safety literature while employing these models developed to study important empirical issues. Crash severity analysis has evolved on examining the influence of several factors, comprising of driver characteristics, vehicle characteristics, roadway attributes, environmental factors and crash characteristics on traffic crash related severities. These associated risk factors are critical to assist decision makers, transportation officials, insurance companies, and vehicle manufacturers to make informed decisions to improve road safety, thereby providing empirical evidence regarding the critical factors would allow us to suggest remedial measures to reduce the negative consequences of crash outcomes. To that extent, the current dissertation contributes to the severity analysis with a specific focus on driver injury severity analysis. Road safety researchers have employed several statistical formulations for analyzing the relationship between injury severity and crash related factors. However, there are still several methodological and empirical gaps in safety literature. The specific emphasis of the current dissertation is to contribute substantially towards methodological gaps in the state of the art for driver injury severity analysis along six directions: (1) appropriate model framework, (2) underreporting issue in severity analysis, (3) exogenous factor homogeneity assumption (4) multiple dependent variables in severity analysis, (5) continuum of fatal crashes and (6) data pooling from multiple data sources. In the dissertation, several econometric models are formulated, estimated and validated to address the aforementioned methodological issues through five different empirical studies. The econometric models developed in the dissertation are estimated using police reported crash databases at the regional and the national level from different industrialized countries. Specifically, the dissertation research is undertaken employing General Estimates System and Fatality Analysis Reporting System of the United States and the Victoria crash database of Australia. In addition to making the aforementioned methodological contributions, the dissertation also makes a substantial empirical contribution to the existing safety literature. Specifically, several policy measures in terms of engineering, enforcement, education and emergency response strategies are identified to improve safety situation and to reduce road crash related fatalities." --

By 2030, the number is estimated to be 71.5 million, almost twice as many. An increase in the older population means an increase in older drivers as well. As a result of the natural aging process, the possibility of older drivers being involved in crashes and sustaining severe injuries increases, according to past findings. The objective of this study was to identify characteristics of older drivers involved in crashes in Kansas as well as associated safety issues, which can be used to suggest potential countermeasures for improving safety. A detailed characteristic analysis was carried out for older, middle-aged, and younger drivers involved in crashes, using crash data obtained from the Kansas Department of Transportation, and comparisons were made among the groups. However, the characteristic analysis had no basis with regard to injury severity and hence, univariate statistical analysis was carried out to highlight these severities. In addition, a survey was conducted focusing on identifying older-driver behaviors, potential problems, and level of exposure to various conditions. From the severity analysis, it was found that injury severity of older drivers in crashes occurring on rural roads was significantly higher compared to those on urban roads. Therefore, a detailed analysis was carried out using the decomposition method and ordered probit modeling to identify contributing factors leading to the situation. According to the findings, the number of older male drivers involved in crashes was higher compared to older female drivers, even though older driver licensees' data indicate the opposite. Most of the older-driver-involved crashes occurred under good environmental conditions and at intersections. A majority of older drivers had difficulties associated with left- turn maneuvering and preferred to avoid high-traffic roads and other demanding conditions. Exposure to inclement weather conditions and difficulties associated with merging, diverging, and identifying speeds and distance of oncoming traffic have lead to higher crash propensity. In rural areas, driving in the wrong direction, failing to comply with traffic signs and signals, and speeding were identified as frequent contributing factors in high severe crashes.
