Book CFD Analysis Of Stratified Scavenging In Two Stroke IC Engines

Download or read book CFD Analysis Of Stratified Scavenging In Two Stroke IC Engines written by Srinivasa Rao and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civilization of any country depends on the number of vehicles used by the public. For heavy duties, diesel engines are preferred, while for individual transport, a light duty, two-stroke petrol engines are being employed. Two stroke engines have been around us for more than a century and have survived successfully because of their low power to weight ratio fewer parts and inexpensive, However, from the beginning, two stroke engines have suffered from high emissions and poor fuel economy compared to the larger, heavier but more efficient four stroke engines. The major pollutants emitted from these two-stroke engines are carbon monoxide and un-burnt hydro carbons. Hence globally, stringent regulations are made for permissible levels of pollutants in the exhaust of two and four stroke spark ignition engines. Hydrocarbon emissions in two stroke engines are mainly due to short-circuiting of the fresh charge during scavenging process is a major source of pollution from the two-stroke spark ignition engines. In two-stroke internal combustion (IC) engines, each outward stroke of the piston is a power stroke.combustion turbulence are modeled and studied using CFD.

Book Computational Fluid Dynamic Modelling of Flow and Combustion in Spark Ignition Engines

Download or read book Computational Fluid Dynamic Modelling of Flow and Combustion in Spark Ignition Engines written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is based on the need for understanding the in-cylinder flow and its subsequent effects on combustion in a valved-two-stroke spark ignition engine with fuel injection using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experimental techniques. In this context, the CFD code KIVA-II has been modified to model the two-stroke engine gas exchange and combustion processes. A 3-D Cartesian grid generation program for complex engine geometry has been added to the KIVA code which has been modified to include intake and exhaust flow processes with valves. New and improved sub models for wall jet interaction, mixing controlled combustion and one dimensional wave action have also been incorporated. The modified version of the program has been used to simulate a fuel injected two-stroke spark ignition engine and parametric studies have been undertaken. The simulated flow, combustion and exhaust emission characteristics over a wide range of operating conditions show the expected trends in behaviour observed in actual engines. In the second phase of this study, the air-assisted-fuel-injection (AAFI) process into a cylinder has been simulated with a high resolution computational grid. The simulation results are presented and compared with experimental data obtained using the Schlieren optical technique. An approximate method based on the conservation of mass, momentum and energy of the spray jet and using a comparatively coarse grid has been suggested for simulating the AAFI process. The simulation study predicts a high degree of atomisation of fuel spray with Sauter mean diameter around 10 μm even with moderate air and fuel pressures. The penetration and width of spray are simulated within 15% of the experimental values. In the last phase of this study, the flow and combustion processes have been studied for a four-stroke spark ignition engine with the AAFI process. The simulation results obtained using this approximate method have been validated with experimental data ge.

Book An Innovative 3D CFD Approach towards Virtual Development of Internal Combustion Engines

Download or read book An Innovative 3D CFD Approach towards Virtual Development of Internal Combustion Engines written by Marco Chiodi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-07 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the engine development process, simulation and predictive programs have continuously gained in reliance. Due to the complexity of future internal combustion engines the application of simulation programs towards a reliable “virtual engine development” is a need that represents one of the greatest challenges. Marco Chiodi presents an innovative 3D-CFD-tool, exclusively dedicated and optimized for the simulation of internal combustion engines. Thanks to improved or newly developed 3D-CFD-models for the description of engine processes, this tool ensures an efficient and reliable calculation also by using coarse 3D-CFD-meshes. Based on this approach the CPU-time can be reduced up to a factor 100 in comparison to traditional 3D-CFD-simulations. In addition an integrated and automatic “evaluation tool” establishes a comprehensive analysis of the relevant engine parameters. Due to the capability of a reliable “virtual development” of full-engines, this fast response 3D-CFD-tool makes a major contribution to the engine development process. Südwestmetall-Förderpreis 2010

Book Mixture Formation in Internal Combustion Engines

Download or read book Mixture Formation in Internal Combustion Engines written by Carsten Baumgarten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic control of mixture formation with modern high-pressure injection systems enables us to achieve considerable improvements of the combustion pr- ess in terms of reduced fuel consumption and engine-out raw emissions. However, because of the growing number of free parameters due to more flexible injection systems, variable valve trains, the application of different combustion concepts within different regions of the engine map, etc., the prediction of spray and m- ture formation becomes increasingly complex. For this reason, the optimization of the in-cylinder processes using 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) becomes increasingly important. In these CFD codes, the detailed modeling of spray and mixture formation is a prerequisite for the correct calculation of the subsequent processes like ignition, combustion and formation of emissions. Although such simulation tools can be viewed as standard tools today, the predictive quality of the sub-models is c- stantly enhanced by a more accurate and detailed modeling of the relevant pr- esses, and by the inclusion of new important mechanisms and effects that come along with the development of new injection systems and have not been cons- ered so far. In this book the most widely used mathematical models for the simulation of spray and mixture formation in 3D CFD calculations are described and discussed. In order to give the reader an introduction into the complex processes, the book starts with a description of the fundamental mechanisms and categories of fuel - jection, spray break-up, and mixture formation in internal combustion engines.

Book Flame Propagation in Spark Ignition Engine Combustion Process Using Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD

Download or read book Flame Propagation in Spark Ignition Engine Combustion Process Using Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD written by Hanif Kasmani and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the flame propagation in spark ignition engine combustion process using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). This study is based on flame propagation inside the combustion chamber which is important as flame propagation affects the engine efficiency, emission and some more. A 3-D model is created based on the Mitsubishi Magma 4G15 that act as a baseline engine. It is then simulated using CFD where its approaches make it a suitable platform to study the internal combustion engine phenomenon. The project simulates only 50o CA starting from the ignition until the completion of the combustion process. The flame radius obtain through simulation is then compared with the experimental data together with the literature review. However, there are discrepancies of the results due to improper boundary condition and inherit limitation of the model. For further simulation of combustion process must consider detail mixture properties, detail boundary condition and model extension for better accuracy data.

Book Analysis of Injection Processes in an Innovative 3D CFD Tool for the Simulation of Internal Combustion Engines

Download or read book Analysis of Injection Processes in an Innovative 3D CFD Tool for the Simulation of Internal Combustion Engines written by Marlene Wentsch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the large number of influencing parameters and interactions, the fuel injection and therewith fuel propagation and distribution are among the most complex processes in an internal combustion engine. For this reason, injection is usually the subject to highly detailed numerical modeling, which leads to unacceptably high computing times in the 3D-CFD simulation of a full engine domain. Marlene Wentsch presents a critical analysis, optimization and extension of injection modeling in an innovative, fast response 3D-CFD tool that is exclusively dedicated to the virtual development of internal combustion engines. About the Author Marlene Wentsch works as research associate in the field of 3D-CFD simulations of injection processes at the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering (IVK), University of Stuttgart, Germany.

Book Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flow Inside the Cylinder of a New Two stroke Grail Engine Design

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flow Inside the Cylinder of a New Two stroke Grail Engine Design written by Shoeb Ahmed Syed and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a novel way of implementing Autodesk computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software for internal combustion (IC) engine application. The main objective of this research is to develop a high fidelity simulation methodology for a state of art hybrid two-stroke Grail engine and to investigate the complex motion of piston and intake valve of the engine. Grail engine design is unique due to presence of single intake valve within the piston itself. Thus, the intake valve moves with the piston which makes the motion much more complex to study in the present work. Since the efficiency of combustion and the production of pollutants in the internal combustion engine are strongly dependent on the turbulent flow field in the engine cylinder. The focus is put in the analysis of the in-cylinder flow field dynamics and turbulence within the cylinder and through the complete engine cycle in the initial stages of development of the Grail engine. Finally, the scavenging process of the Grail engine with mixing and scavenging efficiency was also numerically investigated. In most engines, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) is almost exclusively generated during the intake stroke and enhances greatly the mixing of air and fuel to give better mixing during compression stoke. The 3-D simulation of the flow through the engine is performed by using finite element method. Autodesk Reynold's-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) K ?? model is used to perform the calculations of the flow. The performance and possibilities that Autodesk CFD gives for this kind of application is evaluated.
