Book The Greatest Horse of All

Download or read book The Greatest Horse of All written by Charles Justice and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the most basic statistics, completely explained, the author selects the sixteen most likely candidates for the title: "greatest horse of the twentieth century." Fifty colts and fillies, listed mainly ina 1999 publication by The Blood-Horse, Inc., were compared using a three-part process. This process narrowed the top contenders to sixteen. The past performance data for these Thoroughbreds were obtained from the Daily Racing Form's 2000 publication Champions. Using results identical to those explained in the book, the author calculates that the best likely average time for Big Brown to run the upcoming Belmont is 147.54 seconds, or 2:27.54. One hundred simulations at 12 furlongs, based on Big Brown's current 2008 performance data and the past 36 years of Belmont winning times, indicate he has a 72-percent chance of winning the triple crown. The identical formulas used in the book on the past performance data for Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed, came within fractional seconds of predicting their Belmont/Triple Crown wins. Of course, as most Wall Street pundits will warn, past performance is not a guarantee of future performance! And now, in retrospect, Big Brown sadly did not win. Had he run as he was capable, the predicted time stated above would have beaten the winner, Da'Tara, by 2.09 seconds! Charles Justice June 5 and 9, 2008

Book Renegade Champion

Download or read book Renegade Champion written by Richard R. Rust and published by Taylor Trade Publications. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If you buy that horse, you’re buying your daughter’s death warrant,” Jane Pohl’s father was warned at the army barracks in the spring of 1941. But the potential that his teenage daughter Jane saw in the small, temperamental Thoroughbred was enough to convince him otherwise. Earlier that year, when Fitzrada arrived at the army base where Jane’s family lived, the horse was stubborn, unpredictable, and dangerous. Any man who dared addle him up soon found himself face down in the dirt. Jane, excited to ride any horse and up for the challenge, had the most success with Fitz. She was patient and consistent, and the horse responded well at last, showing a great affinity for jumping. Then, inexplicably, a terrible riding accident resulted in serious injuries for both Jane and Fitz, and the army decide that it was time to destroy the horse. Heartbroken, Jane pleaded with her reluctant father: the only way to save Fitz was to buy him from the army. Jane Pohl’s foresight proved to be correct. Jane and Fitz went on to take the Virginia show-jumping circuit by storm, winning 37 jumper and 6 hinter championships. At a time when women were rarely seen in jumping classes at horse shows and were not taken seriously by male competitors, Jane and Fitz helped to break down barriers against women riders competing in the Olympics. In 1946, Jane and Fitz found themselves at the Jumper Championship at the prestigious National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden—the highest jumping title in North America. The road there for horse and rider was a five-year test of faith, patience, and understanding friendship.

Book excerpt: Rough Habit An Unlikely Champion is a tale that captures the essence of horse racing - from dreaming to inspiration, to luck good and bad, to fortunes and reputations made. It's the story not just of an unexpected champion horse, but of those who took him to greatness. Rough Habit is one in the long line of New Zealand-bred champions who have crossed the Tasman and become dominant figures in Australian racing - think Rising Fast, Redcraze, Kiwi, Bonecrusher and Sunline. Like so many before him, Rough Habit came from humble beginnings, bred as little more than a hobby, via a free service, to an unfashionable imported sire, Rough Cast, from the unraced mare Certain Habit. The resultant colt's stature suggested that the experiment was doomed to fail. His breeder, Isabell Roddick, said of Rough Habit, the foal: "He was...probably not the best looking, but I didn't think he was as hideous as he's been made out to be. He was a very small horse. But looks don't tell you if they're going to win a race." Win races he did, 11 of them at Group 1 level, behind only the mighty Sunline for wins at the highest level. He became a cult hero in Brisbane, winning two Stradbroke Handicaps and a record three Doomben Cups. Telling his story in full for the first time is Ken Linnett, winner of the 2018 Bill Whittaker Award for the best book on horse racing in Australia and New Zealand, for his story on Tulloch, the champion of the 1950s and '60s. Linnett has applied the same forensic attention that made Tulloch such a critical and commercial success, to the story of Rough Habit.
