Book Analysis of Algorithms for Filter Bank Design Optimization

Download or read book Analysis of Algorithms for Filter Bank Design Optimization written by Ahmed ElGarewi and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with design algorithms for filter banks based on optimization. The design specifications consist of the perfect reconstruction and frequency response specifications for finite impulse response (FIR) analysis and synthesis filters. The perfect reconstruction conditions are formulated as a set of linear equations with respect to the analysis filters' coefficients and the synthesis filters' coefficients. Five design algorithms are presented. The first three are based on an unconstrained optimization of performance indices, which include the perfect reconstruction error and the error in the frequency specifications. The last two algorithms are formulated as constrained optimization problems with the perfect reconstruction error as the performance index and the frequency specifications as constraints. The performance of the five algorithms is evaluated and compared using six examples; these examples include uniform filter bank, compatible non-uniform filter bank and incompatible non-uniform filter bank designs. The evaluation criteria are based on distortion and aliasing errors, the magnitude response characteristics of analysis and synthesis filters, the computation time required for the optimization, and the convergence of the performance index with respect to the number of iterations. The results show that the five algorithms can achieve almost perfect reconstruction and can meet the frequency response specifications at an acceptable level. In the case of incompatible non-uniform filter banks, the algorithms have challenges to achieve almost perfect reconstruction.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled New Design Methods for Perfect Reconstruction Filter Banks Submitted by Tsui Kai Man for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2004 Perfect reconstruction (PR) filter banks (FBs) have found applications in signal analysis, subband coding and the construction of wavelet bases. This study considers the theory and design of two-channel structural PR FBs. One important advantage of a structural PR FB is that its design can be simplified to conventional finite-/infinite- duration impulse response (FIR/IIR) filter design problems. This study proposes a new structural FB called multi-plet FB. It generalizes structural PR FBs [Pho 1995] and triplet FBs [Ans 1999] by employing multiple lifting steps. The resulting FB is more flexible than traditional structures in choosing the system delays and the filter lengths of the analysis filters. A systematic design procedure based on second order cone programming (SOCP) is also proposed. This is particularly useful for realizing FBs with a narrow transition band. The thesis first makes a detailed study of SOCP, a powerful convex optimization method allowing linear and convex quadratic inequality constraints to be incorporated. Using this useful property, a new method for the optimal minimax and least square (LS) design of linear-phase and low-delay FIR filters with prescribed flatness and peak error is proposed. New low-delay specialized filters such as Hilbert transformers (HTs), digital differentiators (DDs), M-th band filters (MBFs), and variable digital filters (VDFs) can be designed readily by the proposed method. The proposed SOCP approach is coupled with a new constrained model reduction method, which retains the denominator of the conventional model reduction techniques and formulates the optimal design of the numerator as a SOCP, and further extended to the design of causal stable IIR filters. These novel constrained FIR/IIR design methods are then applied to the design of casual stable IIR PR triplet and multi-plet FBs. The use of a hybrid of allpass and FIR linear-phase filters also enables the bumping effect found in the conventional structural PR IIR triplet FBs to be suppressed by an appropriate choice of parameter in the triplet structure. Wavelet FBs can also be obtained by the proposed constrained filter design approach. For the multi-plet FB, a low order prototype PR FB with a much wider transition band is first designed using non-linear optimization in order to obtain a symmetric frequency response and prescribed passband/stopband ripples. A subfilter is then designed using SOCP which enables the prototype FB to be wrapped by means of frequency transformation to meet the desired transition bandwidth while preserving the PR condition, passband/stopband ripples and lifting structure. The design procedure is very robust, and can be applied to both linear- phase and low-delay multi-plet FBs. By formulating the K-regularity conditions as a set of linear equality constraints on the subfilter coefficients, multi-plet-based wavelet bases can easily be designed under the SOCP framework. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is illustrated with several design examples. Book Analysis and Design of FIR Multirate Filter Banks

Download or read book Analysis and Design of FIR Multirate Filter Banks written by Adnan M. S. Al-Adnani and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is concerned with the analysis and design of FIR multirate filter banks. Focusing on the time-frequency relation of the filter bank structures, various design methods have been developed. Standard digital filtering techniques are used such as windowing, and least squares in conjunction with the multirate structures of the filter banks to obtain efficient designs that will allow a great degree of flexibility in controlling the frequency characteristics of the filters. A spectral factorisation technique is introduced to design three-channel based systems in the z-domain. This method extends the well known two-channel based design, and requires no numerical optimization. Time-domain algorithms are introduced to design M-channel systems with arbitrary length filters and arbitrary system delays. Aliasing cancellation and perfect reconstruction conditions in the time domain are addressed. A recursive technique is proposed which uses the synthesis filters from one iteration to update the analysis filters for the next. Wavelets provide a new method for time-scale analysis of non-stationary signals. Filter banks are used to construct several classes of wavelet transforms; orthonormal, bi-orthogonal, and new low delay wavelets using the time-domain formulation.

Book Non uniform band Digital Filter Banks

Book excerpt: New design techniques of digital filter banks are presented in this thesis. The research has been focused on systematic design methods for computationally efficient filter banks with arbitrary center frequencies, which could be easily implemented and are useful in acoustic, speech signal processing, and communication systems. Frequency interpolation filter banks (FIFB) are first derived based on an adaptive filtering structure. FIFB banks show good frequency responses, interesting sensitivities and negligible parameter quantization effects and roundoff noise when they are implemented using modern DSP processors with fixed-point arithmetic. For maximally flat FIFB filter banks, the adjusted pole selection strategy by an optimization procedure is applied. Then, the resonator-based arbitrarily spaced center frequency filter banks (RFB) are proposed. They show better behaviour than general FIFB banks from the point of view of frequency responses and the implementation. In order to suppress the non-negligible sidelobes and further improve the passband performance of the non-uniform band filter banks, frequency domain windowing techniques are studied and linear programming is used to produce optimal windows for different banks. Thus the design methods of non-uniform band filter banks with windowing processing are presented and significant improvements are obtained on the filter bank performance. Finally, the FIFB filter bank techniques are successfully extended to the field of allpass and perfect reconstruction analysis/synthesis systems. This widens the application area of the FIFB filter banks. In an allpass system, a synthesis FIFB filter bank is derived based on a general analysis FIFB bank and the allpass requirement. In the perfect reconstruction system, multirate techniques are applied and the efficient general FIR synthesis filter bank and IIR FIFB filter bank are designed to construct the system.

Book Design and Application of Quincunx Filter Banks

Book excerpt: Quincunx filter banks are two-dimensional, two-channel, nonseparable filter banks. They are widely used in many signal processing applications. In this thesis, we study the design and applications of quincunx filter banks in the processing of two-dimensional digital signals. Symmetric extension algorithms for quincunx filter banks are proposed. In the one-dimensional case, symmetric extension is a commonly used technique to build nonexpansive transforms of finite-length sequences. We show how this technique can be extended to the nonseparable quincunx case. We consider three types of quadrantally-symmetric linear-phase quincunx filter banks, and for each of these types we show how nonexpansive transforms of two-dimensional sequences defined on arbitrary rectangular regions can be constructed. New optimization-based techniques are proposed for the design of high-performance quincunx filter banks for the application of image coding. The new methods yield linear-phase perfect-reconstruction systems with high coding gain, good analysis/synthesis filter frequency responses, and certain prescribed vanishing moment properties. We present examples of filter banks designed with these techniques and demonstrate their efficiency for image coding relative to existing filter banks. The best filter banks in our design examples outperformother previously proposed quincunx filter banks in approximately 80% cases and sometimes even outperform the well-known 9/7 filter bank from the JPEG-2000 standard.

Book Filter Design With Time Domain Mask Constraints Theory and Applications

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimum envelope-constrained filter design is concerned with time-domain synthesis of a filter such that its response to a specific input signal stays within prescribed upper and lower bounds, while minimizing the impact of input noise on the filter output or the impact of the shaped signal on other systems depending on the application. In many practical applications, such as in TV channel equalization, digital transmission, and pulse compression applied to radar, sonar and detection, the soft least square approach, which attempts to match the output waveform with a specific desired pulse, is not the most suitable one. Instead, it becomes necessary to ensure that the response stays within the hard envelope constraints defined by a set of continuous inequality constraints. The main advantage of using the hard envelope-constrained filter formulation is that it admits a whole set of allowable outputs. From this set one can then choose the one which results in the minimization of a cost function appropriate to the application at hand. The signal shaping problems so formulated are semi-infinite optimization problems. This monograph presents in a unified manner results that have been generated over the past several years and are scattered in the research literature. The material covered in the monograph includes problem formulation, numerical optimization algorithms, filter robustness issues and practical examples of the application of envelope constrained filter design. Audience: Postgraduate students, researchers in optimization and telecommunications engineering, and applied mathematicians.

Book excerpt: What is Filter Bank A filter bank is an array of bandpass filters that is used in signal processing. Its purpose is to divide the input signal into several components, each of which carries a sub-band of the original signal. Attenuating the components in a new way and recombining them into a modified version of the original signal is one of the applications of a filter bank. A graphic equalizer is one example of this type of application. The result of analysis is referred to as a subband signal, and it contains as many subbands as there are filters in the filter bank. The process of decomposition that is carried out by the filter bank is referred to as analysis. Synthesis is the term used to describe the process of reconstruction, which refers to the act of reconstructing a complete signal that was produced by the filtering process.
