Book Analysis of a Perforated Cylindrical Shell Part Ii Derivation of Equations for the Stress Analysis of a Fully Penetrated Shell

Download or read book Analysis of a Perforated Cylindrical Shell Part Ii Derivation of Equations for the Stress Analysis of a Fully Penetrated Shell written by J. B. Mahoney and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the derivation of the equations for an orthotropic circular cylindrical shell. The orthotropic material properties of the shell represent the effects of a large number of radial holes penetrating the shell surface in rectangular patterns. The general equations for the orthotropic shell are obtained and are then reduced to a rotationally symmetric form for the case when the penetration patterns extend completely around the shell and the shell is subjected to hydrostatic pressure. These axisymmetric orthotropic cylindrical shell equations are solved as the first and simplest class of solutions obtainable. The orthotropic axisymmetric shell solutions yield the stresses directly which may then be considered average stress values in our idealized structure. Consequently, the investigation later concerns itself with obtaining a method for calculating the peak stress values which occur in the actual penetrated shell. (Author).

Book Analysis of a Perforated Cylindrical Shell Part I Determination of Effective Elastic Constants

Download or read book Analysis of a Perforated Cylindrical Shell Part I Determination of Effective Elastic Constants written by J. B. Mahoney and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the results of the first phase of a three phase program. In this first phase the definitions for the effective orthotropic stiffness coefficients are formulated in terms of the geometric and elastic material properties for a right circular cylindrical shell penetrated by a large number of radial circular holes. The effective stiffness coefficients are developed in a manner quite similar to that used for determining the coefficients for a flat perforated plate. Phases two and three will contain the development of the shell differential equations with solutions and the study of stress distributions respectively. A fourth phase may be necessary in which the same complete process will be repeated for a large number of circular holes of a triangular pattern in the circular cylinder. (Author).

Book Analysis of a Cylindrical Shell Penetrated by Multiple Holes in a Triangular Pattern

Download or read book Analysis of a Cylindrical Shell Penetrated by Multiple Holes in a Triangular Pattern written by J. B. Mahoney and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method presented here is based on the assumption that a set of 'equivalent' elastic constants can be developed for a perforated shell and that these 'equivalent' elastic constants can be used within the classical shell theory to obtain the average deflections and stresses in the perforated shell. The development of the 'equivalent' elastic constants is achieved by comparing the strain energy of an idealized typical element of the perforated shell under stress to a similarly stressed, isotropic, unperforated cylindrical shell element. In the idealization of the element for the perforated shell the beam ligaments and a central inner triangular portion are considered to simulate the total strain energy density. The procedure of including the additional central element is similar to that developed for the square pattern of penetrations in a plate. The final comparison of the two strain energy densities for the idealized element and the isotropic shell element is then performed in a manner similar to that developed by Horvay and Malkin for perforated plate elements. The 'equivalent' elastic constants so determined can then be used in the generalized cylindrical shell equations to obtain a final solution for the deflections and stresses. Author).

Book Stresses in a Perforated Cylindrical Shell Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stresses in a Perforated Cylindrical Shell Classic Reprint written by Frances Bauer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stresses in a Perforated Cylindrical Shell In this paper we study the deformations of perforated cylindrical elastic shells that are subjected to surface and boundary forces. The presence of a hole in the shell's wall significantly alters the distribution and magnitudes of the stresses. Approximate procedures, which are restricted in their applicability, have been proposed by various authors [1-6] to determine these stresses. The paper by Savin [h] also contains a general discussion of shell cutout problems and references to previous work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study ofthree-dimensional continua has been a traditional part of graduate education in solid mechanics for some time. With rational simplifications to the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, the engineering theories of medium-thin plates and of thin shells may be derived and applied to a large class of engi neering structures distinguished by a characteristically small dimension in one direction. Often, these theories are developed somewhat independently due to their distinctive geometrical and load-resistance characteristics. On the other hand, the two systems share a common basis and might be unified under the classification of Surface Structures after the German term Fliichentragwerke. This common basis is fully exploited in this book. A substantial portion of many traditional approaches to this subject has been devoted to constructing classical and approximate solutions to the governing equations of the system in order to proceed with applications. Within the context of analytical, as opposed to numerical, approaches, the limited general ity of many such solutions has been a formidable obstacle to applications involving complex geometry, material properties, and/or loading. It is now relatively routine to obtain computer-based solutions to quite complicated situations. However, the choice of the proper problem to solve through the selection of the mathematical model remains a human rather than a machine task and requires a basis in the theory of the subject.
