Book Face Analysis Under Uncontrolled Conditions

Download or read book Face Analysis Under Uncontrolled Conditions written by Romain Belmonte and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-09-14 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Face analysis is essential for a large number of applications such as human-computer interaction or multimedia (e.g. content indexing and retrieval). Although many approaches are under investigation, performance under uncontrolled conditions is still not satisfactory. The variations that impact facial appearance (e.g. pose, expression, illumination, occlusion, motion blur) make it a difficult problem to solve. This book describes the progress towards this goal, from a core building block – landmark detection – to the higher level of micro and macro expression recognition. Specifically, the book addresses the modeling of temporal information to coincide with the dynamic nature of the face. It also includes a benchmark of recent solutions along with details about the acquisition of a dataset for such tasks.

Book Biometrics and Identity Management

Download or read book Biometrics and Identity Management written by Ben Schouten and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-12-23 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key driving factor for biometrics is the widespread national and international depl- ment of biometric systems that has been initiated in the past two years and is about to accelerate. While nearly all current biometric deployments are government-led and pr- cipally concerned with national security and border control scenarios, it is now apparent that the widespread availability of biometrics in everyday life will also spin out an ev- increasing number of (private) applications in other domains. Crucial to this vision is the management of the user’s identity, which does not only imply the creation and update of a biometric template, but requires the development of instruments to properly handle all the data and operations related to the user identity. COST Action 2101 on Biometrics for Identity Documents and Smart Cards has - erated as a valuable and effective platform for close collaboration of European sci- tists from academia and industry researching biometrics for identity documents and smartcards. This has led to the continuous advances achieved in various classes of biometrics and their implementations in the identity management domain. These c- tributions to knowledge in this field were first presented at the First European Wo- shop on Biometrics and Identity Management (BioID 2008) organized in Roskilde, Denmark during May 7–9, 2008.

Book Statistical Computing on Manifolds for 3D Face Analysis and Recognition

Download or read book Statistical Computing on Manifolds for 3D Face Analysis and Recognition written by Hassen Drira and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automatic face recognition has many benefits over other biometric technologies due to the natural, non-intrusive, and high throughput nature of face data acquisition. Thus, the techniques for face recognition have received a growing attention within the computer vision community over the past three decades. In terms of a modality for face imaging, a major advantage of 3D scans over 2D color imaging is that variations in illumination and scaling have less influence on the 3D scans. However, scan data often suffer from the problem of missing parts dueto self-occlusions or imperfections in scanning technologies. Additionally, variations in face data due to facial expressions are challenging to 3D face recognition. In order to be useful in real-world applications, 3D face recognition approaches should be able to successfully recognize face scans even in the presence of large expression-based deformations and missing data due to occlusions and pose variation. Most recent research has been directed towards expression-invariant techniques and spent less effort to handle the missing parts problem. Few approaches handles the missing part problem but none has performed on a full database containing real missing data, they simulate some missing parts. We present a common framework handling both large expressions and missing parts due to large pose variation. In addition, with the same framework, we are able to average surfaces and hierarchically organize databases to allow efficient searches. In presence of occlusion, we propose to delete and restore occluded parts. The surface is first represented by radial curves (emanating from the nose tip fo the 3D face). Then a base is built using PCA for each curve. Hence, the missing part of the curve can be restored by projecting the existing part of it on the base. PCA is applied on the tangent space of the mean curve as it is linear space. Once the occlusion was detected and removed, the occlusion challenge can be handled as a missing data problem. Hence, we apply the restoration framework and then apply our radial-curve-based 3D face recognition algorithm.

Book Towards Three dimensional Face Recognition in the Real

Download or read book Towards Three dimensional Face Recognition in the Real written by Huibin Li and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the natural, non-intrusive, easily collectible, widespread applicability, machine-based face recognition has received significant attention from the biometrics community over the past three decades. Compared with traditional appearance-based (2D) face recognition, shape-based (3D) face recognition is more stable to illumination variations, small head pose changes, and varying facial cosmetics. However, 3D face scans captured in unconstrained conditions may lead to various difficulties, such as non-rigid deformations caused by varying expressions, data missing due to self occlusions and external occlusions, as well as low-quality data as a result of some imperfections in the scanning technology. In order to deal with those difficulties and to be useful in real-world applications, in this thesis, we propose two 3D face recognition approaches: one is focusing on handling various expression changes, while the other one can recognize people in the presence of large facial expressions, occlusions and large pose various. In addition, we provide a provable and practical surface meshing algorithm for data-quality improvement. To deal with expression issue, we assume that different local facial region (e.g. nose, eyes) has different intra-expression/inter-expression shape variability, and thus has different importance. Based on this assumption, we design a learning strategy to find out the quantification importance of local facial regions in terms of their discriminating power. For facial description, we propose a novel shape descriptor by encoding the micro-structure of multi-channel facial normal information in multiple scales, namely, Multi-Scale and Multi-Component Local Normal Patterns (MSMC-LNP). It can comprehensively describe the local shape changes of 3D facial surfaces by a set of LNP histograms including both global and local cues. For face matching, Weighted Sparse Representation-based Classifier (W-SRC) is formulated based on the learned quantification importance and the LNP histograms. The proposed approach is evaluated on four databases: the FRGC v2.0, Bosphorus, BU-3DFE and 3D-TEC, including face scans in the presence of diverse expressions and action units, or several prototypical expressions with different intensities, or facial expression variations combine with strong facial similarities (i.e. identical twins). Extensive experimental results show that the proposed 3D face recognition approach with the use of discriminative facial descriptors can be able to deal with expression variations and perform quite accurately over all databases, and thereby has a good generalization ability. To deal with expression and data missing issues in an uniform framework, we propose a mesh-based registration free 3D face recognition approach based on a novel local facial shape descriptor and a multi-task sparse representation-based face matching process. The work is intended for academics, engineers, and researchers specializing in the field of facial recognition.

Book Adaptive Weighted Local Textural Features for Illumination Expression and Occlusion Invariant Face Recognition

Download or read book Adaptive Weighted Local Textural Features for Illumination Expression and Occlusion Invariant Face Recognition written by Chen Cui and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Face recognition is one of the most promising biometric methodologies for human identification in a non-cooperative security environment. Several algorithms have been developed for extracting different facial features for face recognition. Due to the various possible challenges of data captured at different lighting conditions, viewing angles, facial expressions, and partial occlusions in natural environmental conditions, automatic facial recognition is still remaining as a difficult issue that needs to be resolved. In this thesis, we propose a novel approach to tackle some of these issues by analyzing the local textural descriptions for facial feature representation. The textural information is extracted by an enhanced local binary pattern description of all the local regions in the face, and the dimensionality of the texture image is reduced by principal component analysis performed on each local face region independently. The face feature vector is obtained by concatenating the reduced dimensional weight set of each module (sub-region) of the face image. The weightage of each sub-region is determined by employing the local variance estimate of the respective region which represents the significance of the region. Experiments conducted on various popular face databases show promising performance of the proposed algorithm in varying lighting, expression, and partial occlusion conditions. Research work is progressing to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed face recognition method on pose varying conditions as well. It is envisaged that a multilane approach of trained frameworks at different pose bins and an appropriate voting strategy would lead to a good recognition rate in such situation.

Book New Approaches to Characterization and Recognition of Faces

This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a baby, one of our earliest stimuli is that of human faces. We rapidly learn to identify, characterize and eventually distinguish those who are near and dear to us. We accept face recognition later as an everyday ability. We realize the complexity of the underlying problem only when we attempt to duplicate this skill in a computer vision system. This book is arranged around a number of clustered themes covering different aspects of face recognition. The first section presents an architecture for face recognition based on Hidden Markov Models; it is followed by an article on coding methods. The next section is devoted to 3D methods of face recognition and is followed by a section covering various aspects and techniques in video. Next short section is devoted to the characterization and detection of features in faces. Finally, you can find an article on the human perception of faces and how different neurological or psychological disorders can affect this.
