Book Four Works for Solo Timpani

Download or read book Four Works for Solo Timpani written by Naomi Marcus and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of timpani as a solo instrument is an integral part of an undergraduate and graduate education in percussion. Performance of a solo piece on this instrument is typically required for entrance into such programs, and is also usually a compulsory element in percussion recitals of varying degree levels. Despite this level of importance placed on the idea of learning timpani solos as a means to furthering one’s education, there is little existing scholarly research written on the subject of timpani solos. One possible reason for this is that, often, timpani solos are not programmed as much in musical arenas outside of the academic, particularly in comparison with other solo percussion instruments, such as the marimba or pieces written for multiple-percussion set-up.

Book An Analytical Study of Percussion Literature Influenced by Eastern Musical Practice

Download or read book An Analytical Study of Percussion Literature Influenced by Eastern Musical Practice written by Jonathan Tirado and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims to fill in a gap in percussion research by providing analyses on several significant percussion works that have been influenced by Eastern musical practice with Wind in the Bamboo Grove by Keiko Abe, Rain Tree by Toru Takemitsu, and Kembang Suling by Gareth Farr. The paper also provides an analysis on improvisational jazz in George Gershwin’s Someone to Watch over Me and focuses on compositional devices used in percussion notation through Western and Eastern music with Nebojsa Zivkovic’s Pezzo Da Concerto and Michio Kitazume’s Side by Side. Although not influenced by Eastern music, these pieces in turn inspired Eastern composers by expanding twentieth century music composition. The percussion literature analyzed within this document expresses the differences between the Western and Eastern styles by providing a synthesis that can be attained through performance. These percussion pieces are part of a growing library of literature further developing the solo percussion repertoire. The performance analyses in each chapter will examine the approaches exhibited in the composition along with the instrumentation as it pertains to the Eastern influenced harmonic language. The knowledge gained by both the Western and Eastern approach to music can be utilized to develop a well-rounded percussionist.

Book An Examination of Selected Works for Percussion

Download or read book An Examination of Selected Works for Percussion written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a report intended for musicians planning to perform any number of, or scholars seeking to enrich understanding of, the following compositions: Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble by David Gillingham, XL Plus One by Alvin Etler, March from Eight Pieces for Four Timpani by Elliott Carter, 42nd Street Rondo by Wayne Siegel, and Oceanus by Steve Houghton and Wendell Yuponce. Each work is analyzed in accordance with Jan Larue's method of style analysis. For some compositions, analysis of harmony has been omitted. For all compositions, the author has added a pedagogical realm of analysis, dedicated to notable performance considerations, interpretive possibilities, and technical considerations, to Larue's organizational scheme. Therefore, the approach taken in this document can be expressed as: Sound, Harmony, Melody, Rhythm, Growth, and Performance.

Book Drum Set as a Solo Artform

Download or read book Drum Set as a Solo Artform written by Ben Cantrell and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The aim of this project is to commission several newer compositions for solo drum set and then provide a detailed insight into the pieces through analysis and performance guides. As well, this document intends to aid high school, college, and professional percussionists with the means to more easily transition to drum set from traditional classical percussion. This project presents a brief overview of drum set history, discussions of the commissioned works, and provides a suggested listing of the current repertoire of solo drum set work. The pieces used for this study will include Wagwan (2018) by Adam Hopper, Eagle Rockabye (2019) by Dr. Chad Floyd, and Through the Looking Glass by Ben Cantrell (2020). All three of these compositions are new works for the drum set as a solo art form."--Abstract from author supplied metadata

Book Discussion and Analysis of a Graduate Recital

Download or read book Discussion and Analysis of a Graduate Recital written by Christopher James Edgar Hull and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses some of the many facets of percussion music through the examination and analysis of the following works: Gary Burton's Chega De Saudade for solo vibraphone; Steve Reich's Marimba Phase for two marimbas; Michael Gordon's XY for five drums; the author's own arrangement for multiple-percussion setup of John Cage's In a Landscape; Minoru Miki's Time for Marimba for solo marimba; and Milton Babbitt's Homily for solo snare drum. As the repertoire and performance practices of percussion continue to develop, there are many issues of note to the studying percussionist. These range from technical concerns, to issues of interpretation. Each work exemplifies certain of these issues, and this paper seeks to glean better understanding of those through analysis and study of the works.

The present study examines Maric's influences, analyzes his compositional style, and provides a performance guide. Brief biographical information is provided to introduce Maric. His compositional style is examined by analyzing tonal language and formal structures. The tonal language of these pieces combines octatonic scales and diatonic scales. In terms of form, Maric uses mathematical sequences to determine proportions between sections, including the Fibonacci sequence.
