Book excerpt: In my experience, students of color encounter an expectation of white normative standards within PK-20 educational spaces. Cultural disparage is exacerbated as students of color reach for higher levels of achievement as doctoral students. This research focuses on a duality of constructs to 1) take an antiracist approach to analyze the student learning environment within higher education and 2) build affirmational approaches to successful navigation for doctoral students of color. By focusing on consciously deconstructing elements which fuel feelings of imposter syndrome, this dissertation of practice examines the doctoral experience for students of color to develop affirmations for self and engage in culturally relevant supportive practices. This study utilizes Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality to advocate for the disruption of the valuing of assimilation over affirmation within the academy. Through semi-structured interviews with faculty of color and student participation in dialogic engagement within learning modules, the study adds evidence centering phenomenological research. The intervention consciously lifts voices, lived experiences, challenges and navigational approaches within the academy of a predominantly white institution. Findings demonstrate a critical analysis of higher education institutions to reevaluate systemic impact upon students of color and the racialized fueling of imposter syndrome. Personal narratives from participants name common themes of being othered, internalizing devaluing messages, and questioning one's worthiness and personal measurement of success. America's educational system has failed students of color by devaluing their full identity, culture, and way of being. In order to establish an equitable doctoral learning environment, recommendations are offered to decenter whiteness, and intentionally affirm students of color.

Ovarian cancer is a disease specific to women; as such, women’s experiences cannot be minimized in attempts to understand the disease.

It seeks to set the speeches within the context of the court system of the Late Roman Republic and to explore in detail the strategies available to Roman advocates to win the votes of jurors. The volume comprises a substantial introduction, fourteen chapters by prominent Ciceronian scholars in Britain, North America, and Germany, and a final chapter by a current British Appeal Court judge who comments on Cicero's techniques from the point of view of a modern advocate. The introduction deals with issues concerning the general nature of advocacy, the Roman court system as compared with other ancient and modern systems, the Roman 'profession' of advocacy and its etiquette, the place of advocacy in Cicero's career, the ancient theory of rhetoric and argument as applied to courtroom advocacy, and the relationship between the published texts of the speeches as we have them and the speeches actually delivered in court. The first eight chapters discuss general themes: legal procedure in Cicero's time, Cicero's Italian clients, Cicero's methods of setting out or alluding to the facts of a case, his use of legal arguments, arguments from character, invective, self-reference, and emotional appeal, the last of these especially in the concluding sections of his speeches. Chapters 9-14 examine a range of particular speeches as case studies - In Verrem II.1 (from Cicero's only major extant prosecution case), Pro Archia, De Domo Sua, Pro Caecina, Pro Cluentio, Pro Ligario. These speeches cover the period of the height of Cicero's career, from 70 BC, when Cicero became acknowledged as the leading Roman advocate, to 49 BC when Caesar's dictatorship required Cicero to adapt his well-tried forensic techniques to drastically new circumstances, and they contain arguments on a wide range of subject-matter, including provincial maladministration, usurpation of citizenship rights, violent dispossession, the religious law relating to the consecration of property, poisoning, bribery, and political offences. Other speeches, including all the better-known ones, are used as illustrative examples in the introduction and in the more general chapters. Book excerpt: Affirmative action for blacks has been implemented in recent years mainly as racial quota system at public universities in Brazil. The topic became nationally debated when the racial quota system of the University of Brasilia was adopted. Racial quotas were questioned in the Brazilian Supreme Court with the argument that they were unconstitutional. At the same time, the previous governments has been favorable of inclusive policies and extended the scope of affirmative action adoption. However, why the conservative reaction to racial quotas continued to socially and institutionally expand in spite of their implementation in many universities? The focus of this thesis was to frame these reactions in an institutional perspective by hypothesizing in this research that institutional racism could be addressed as non-recognition of black Brazilians as full subjects of rights considering their identity fragmentation due to the processes of racial formation that undermined racial solidarity, identification, and political participation through miscegenation. In order to investigate the identity framing of institutional racism, the racial quotas system at the University of Brasilia was chosen for policy process analysis. The Advocacy Coalition Framework was the choice of analysis because it permits to observe the policy process since the discussions that aimed to insert the problem of black exclusion in the higher education subsystem to the evaluation of policy implementation based on the approved documents to the broad implications considering the scope of actions from those who shared the beliefs by which coalitions are motivated to act. The results point to the maintenance of racial democracy in the coalition actors' beliefs that affirm the non-existence of race, the impossibility of black identity, and advocate for the no-racist character of Brazilian identity due to its population racial mixing. Therefore, the hypothesis presented indications of being politically relevant since this research found indications that institutional racism can be framed as non-recognition of black identity by those responsible for its implementation, consciously or not led by individuals through the institutional gaps that do not present any mechanism of coercion or reward for managers to be interested in the full development of affirmative action.
