Book Poverty Reduction in the Course of African Development

Download or read book Poverty Reduction in the Course of African Development written by Machiko Nissanke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the opportunities and the challenges facing African economies in the 21st century, this edited volume traces the evolution of poverty in the course of economic development in sub-Saharan Africa over the recent decades. By engaging with, and seeking to develop on, the work of Professor Erik Thorbecke, it examines the evolving dynamics of poverty in multiple dimensions. It also discusses how to lay down foundations for improved governance and institutions that will realize inclusive development in sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, the volume contributes to our understanding of dynamics of pro-poor growth and pro-growth poverty reduction, and to the on-going policy and academic debates on how to overcome fragility and vulnerability and secure inclusive development through socio-economic transformation in sub-Saharan Africa. The volume is divided into four parts; two overview chapters in Part 1 set out a common theme running through the volume. Four chapters in Part II examine an evolution of the poverty profile in different dimensions in sub-Saharan Africa since the new millennium. Part III presents three country case studies of tracing poverty dynamics under a country-specific institutional and policy environment. Part IV consists of three chapters, each of which addresses the question of how to advance an inclusive development agenda in sub-Saharan Africa, but from three different perspectives: structural changes, a governance framework, and an institutional foundation.

Book Analysis of Multidimensional Poverty

Download or read book Analysis of Multidimensional Poverty written by Louis-Marie Asselin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is a paradoxical state. Recognizable in the eld for any sensitive observer who travels in remote rural areas and urban slums and meets marginalized people in a given society, poverty still remains a challenge to conceptual formalization and to measurement that is consistent with such formalization. The analysis of poverty is multidisciplinary. It goes from ethics to economics, from political science to human biology, and any type of measurement rests on mathematics. Moreover, poverty is multifaceted according to the types of deprivation, and it is also gender and age speci c. A vector of variables is required, which raises a substantial problem for individual and group comparisons necessary to equity analysis. Multidimension- ity also complicates the aggregation necessary to perform the ef ciency analysis of policies. In the case of income poverty, these two problems, equity and ef ciency, have bene ted from very signi cant progress in the eld of economics. Similar achievements are still to come in the area of multidimensional poverty. Within this general background, this book has a very modest and narrow-scoped objective. It proposes an operational methodology for measuring multidimensional poverty, independent from the conceptual origin, the size and the qualitative as well as the quantitative nature of the primary indicators used to describe the poverty of an individual, a household or a sociodemographic entity.

Book Analysis of Multidimensional Poverty

Download or read book Analysis of Multidimensional Poverty written by Louis-Marie Asselin and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts forward an operational methodology for measuring multidimensional poverty, independent from the conceptual origin, size and qualitative as well as quantitative nature of the primary indicators used to describe the poverty of an individual, household or socio-demographic entity. It allows for the integration of the sets of techniques already available or forthcoming in the area of income poverty into the analysis of multidimensional poverty. The core of the methodology rests on a solution to the issue of aggregation across the multiple sub-dimensions of poverty. The rationale of the proposed solution is based on the exploration of the internal structure of association between these sub-dimensions of poverty. The author illustrates the conceptual debates on the dimensions of poverty and on the measurement methodologies with empirical studies showing the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches by dividing the book into two parts. The first part, which is theoretical, develops the rationale underlying the proposed methodology with numerical examples. The second part presents two case studies, one from Vietnam and the other from Senegal, using the methodology outlined in the first part. Both case studies are based on large household surveys implemented by the different national statistical offices. The unique structure of this book makes it practical for use by poverty and policy researchers, professionals in international development, and graduate students interested in poverty and inequality.

Book Poverty and Well Being in East Africa

Download or read book Poverty and Well Being in East Africa written by Almas Heshmati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of selected studies on poverty and well-being in East Africa. Using a multidimensional approach, the authors hope to provide a broad view of poverty and a thorough account of the variables that contribute to it. As opposed to traditional studies of poverty, which focus mainly on material well-being, this volume includes criteria such as material standard of living, health, education, housing, personal security, access to information, freedom, participation in organization, corruption, trust, and employment. The studies highlighted in this volume are grouped into the following four research areas: child poverty and malnutrition, dynamics and determinants of poverty, multidimensional measures of poverty, and energy-environment-poverty relationships. Together, these studies provide a comprehensive picture of the state of multidimensional poverty, its measurement, causal factors, and policies and practices in Burundi, Cameron, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tanzania. The methodology utilized in the studies is diverse as well, ranging from econometric analysis to decision theory, to neoclassical growth models. This book is geared towards students and researchers interested in economic development, welfare, and poverty in Africa as well as policy makers and members of NGOs and international aid agencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guinea’s Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) presented well-defined poverty reduction. The government should strengthen capacity to monitor policy and PRS outcomes to facilitate the central role of the PRS as both a policy document and a tool to coordinate policies. Strong macroeconomic policies have to be adopted while ensuring that the composition of expenditure identifies policy weaknesses related to governance and public service delivery, and sets out appropriate policy responses. Linking policies and poverty-reduction strategies to policy targets and outcome indicators is suggested by Executive Directors.

Several measures were taken at the institutional, technical, and human levels to improve the mobilization of fiscal resources. In the monetary area, the government continued to use indirect instruments to control liquidity: reserve requirements, open market operations, treasury bills, and lead interest rates. In the area of transportation and public works, priority was given to road transport by opening up access to production areas, improving the conditions of passenger transport, and strengthening the competitiveness of the national economy.

This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2021, the Indonesia economy has bounced back to almost at the condition before the COVID-19 pandemic. Confdence, in general, has been strong among Indonesians with the aim to rebuild the country better. Growth is expected to accelerate to escape the middle-income trap before 2045 and, at the same time, to transform to green economy. It has been argued, nevertheless, that, to achieve these goals, Indonesia needs to improve its qualities of institutions and human capital. This book is intended to discuss these issues as well as how they influence Indonesia’s development.

Book Household Vulnerability and Resilience to Economic Shocks

Download or read book Household Vulnerability and Resilience to Economic Shocks written by Simon Feeny and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the vulnerability and resilience to economic shocks at the household level, this book draws on extensive research activities carried out in two Melanesia countries: the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. In particular, it identifies the household impacts of the recent food, fuel and economic crises. The contributors also examine resilience by identifying how households responded to these recent economic events in order to cope with their impacts. Findings indicate that households are vulnerable to a range of shocks and often struggle to cope with their impacts. Shocks are making it harder for households to meet their basic needs. Households in Melanesia are facing increasing demands for money, in particular for school fees, basic foodstuffs and customary obligations. Concurrently, there are limited domestic opportunities for formal employment. Traditional social support networks are strong and are an important form of resilience. However, there is evidence that they are disintegrating. Of particular focus are the gendered impacts. Women are found to bear a disproportionate share of the burden in adjusting to household shocks. The authors highlight key areas in which public policy and development programmes can reduce household vulnerability and increase their resilience to future economic shocks.

Book Conflict Livelihoods and Poverty in Guinea Bissau

Download or read book Conflict Livelihoods and Poverty in Guinea Bissau written by Boubacar-Sid Barry and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict, Livelihoods, and Poverty in Guinea-Bissau is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion. Conflict and political instability have weakened Guinea-Bissau's productive infrastructure considerably during the past three decades. This situation contributes to an increase in the degree of vulnerability of the population, especially in rural areas where most economic activities continue to take place. As growth has been weak, poverty levels remain high. This book provides a collection of papers on conflict, livelihoods, and poverty in Guinea-Bissau based on both the nationally representative 2002 household survey and a small scale survey with both quantitative and qualitative components implemented in 2004. The chapters deal with growth and poverty, institutions and social networks, the determinants of poverty, the means of livelihoods of the population, and finally cashew production and taxation. Book Measuring Multidimensional Poverty Among Youth in South Africa at the Sub national Level

Download or read book Measuring Multidimensional Poverty Among Youth in South Africa at the Sub national Level written by Emily Frame and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Research evidence points to the multiple forms of deprivation faced by the current generation of young people in South Africa. Little is known about the way in which these various deprivations interrelate - and the extent to which they vary from one local area to another. This paper suggests the adoption of a Multidimensional Poverty Index for Youth as a useful way to integrate a number of dimensions of deprivation into an aggregate measure that can then be used to flag variations in aggregate deprivation across local areas of South Africa. The measure presented draws on the internationally recognized Alkire Foster methodology. However, it is adapted to include dimensions, indicators and deprivation cut-offs selected specifically to reflect the unique experiences of this youth cohort in the context of post-apartheid South Africa. Using National Census 2011 data, the Youth Multidimensional Poverty Index (Youth MPI) quantifies the nature and extent of multidimensional poverty among youth aged 15-24 and allows for a comparison of its spatial distribution across relatively small geographical regions. The results indicate a highly unequal spatial distribution of youth multidimensional poverty between local municipalities, with the highest levels of youth poverty concentrated in the former homeland areas. Analysis of the separate indicators that make up the Youth MPI indicate that 72% of multidimensionally poor youth are deprived in educational attainment. Further investigation suggests that deprivation in education and economic opportunities contribute the highest shares to the overall Youth MPI score. The results illustrate the potential usefulness of the Youth MPI as a tool for informing and targeting policies and interventions directed at youth."--page [1].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) highlights the progress report for Guinea. In order to strengthen the dynamics undertaken in the area of planning and implementing the poverty reduction strategy, with the support of its development partners, the government in September 2012 undertook the process of preparing its third PRSP, which covers 2013–2015. PRSP-3 implementation for the 2013 annual period registered disappointing results, explained by the unfavorable domestic as well as international context (political instability and falling commodities prices) and poor performance in growth sectors such as mining. Investments in infrastructures in support of growth increased substantially. Support and strengthening of the efforts made in this area will make it possible to ensure stable GDP growth rates of approximately 7.8 percent between 2013 and 2015. However, investments in the energy sector have yielded disappointing results as a result of the poor condition of the network, commercial management problems, and other factors.
