Book Analysing Automobile Industry Supply Chains

Download or read book Analysing Automobile Industry Supply Chains written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysing the automobile sector is important for understanding the evolution of many economies in the EU. This is because of the sector's direct importance in terms of GDP and employment, its sensitivity to the economic cycle, as well as its extended role in the economy through supply chains. While our analysis covers all EU Member States, we focus particularly on France and Germany. The aim of this study is to evaluate recent trends in the automobile and related sectors using a global value chain (GVC) approach. Building on these results, we evaluate the potential impact across countries and sectors of a hypothetical negative demand shock for cars. We conclude the analysis by studying the current position of the automobile sector across countries in light of the transition towards electric vehicles. Our main finding confirms that carmakers in France and Germany have chosen different production strategies. While French carmakers have traditionally relied much more on offshoring final production, German car makers seems to have retained much more assembly at home, while offshoring intermediates to neighbouring countries. Moreover, we find that a hypothetical shock of 10% to the final demand for cars by EU consumers could lead to a 0.2% drop in total employment demand in France, placing it at the European average. Germany, however, would suffer from a greater loss of 0.7% in total employment demand. In view of the upcoming shift towards electric car technologies and autonomous driving, we find evidence suggesting that countries in the EU are lagging behind China and the US when it comes to the production of electric parts used in the car sector.

Download or read book Automobile Industry Supply Chain in Thailand written by Munehiko Itoh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focuses on the process of growth in the automobile industries in the ASEAN region. ASEAN is drawing attention both from the vantage point of its position as an automobile-producing region and as a potential automobile market. Thailand in particular has long treated automobile production as a national strategy, and this research puts considerable focus on Thailand's initiatives. Since 2012, the authors have been carrying out on-site surveys and have visited many of the suppliers that form the local automobile industry; this published research represents a summary of those findings. The fields of specialty of this study’s respective authors differ, so analyses have been made from a range of vectors. In particular, the focus is on the supply chain in what is generally referred to as a keiretsu.

Book Supply Chain Resilience Management Is the Japanese Automotive Supply Chain resilient enough

Download or read book Supply Chain Resilience Management Is the Japanese Automotive Supply Chain resilient enough written by Wladimir Wiegel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: Distinction, University of Manchester (Manchester Business School), language: English, abstract: Since 1980’s the Japanese car manufacturing industry has been celebrated as the most efficient car industry in the world regarding production systems and processes. However, on 16 July 2007 this efficiency of the entire Japanese automotive industry was challenged when an earthquake hit the Chuetsu region in Japan and decimated a small but critical portion of its supply chain. Riken Corp., a supplier of automobile engine components such as piston rings, was this critical sup-ply chain bit. Its failure to operate after the event caused a chain reaction of plant closures of the main eight Japanese car manufacturers and parallelised nearly 70 per cent of the world biggest auto production industry. The underlying qualitative study adopts some conceptual supply chain resilience management models available in the academic literature as theoretical lenses to analyze the Riken Corp. case. The main argument of this research paper is that while the Japanese automotive supply chain is capable of delivering an efficient and effective response to and recovery from an interruption, it, however, lacks the capability of event readiness, which is the active resilience preparation for a supply chain disruption.

Download or read book The Global Automotive Industry written by Paul Nieuwenhuis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The automotive industry is still one of the world's largest manufacturing sectors, but it suffers from being very technology-focused as well as being relatively short-term focused. There is little emphasis within the industry and its consultancy and analyst supply network on the broader social and economic impacts of automobility and of the sector that provides it. The Global Automotive Industry addresses this need and is a first port of call for any academic, official or consultant wanting an overview of the state of the industry. An international team of specialist researchers, both from academia and business, review and analyse the key issues that make vehicle manufacturing still the world’s premier manufacturing sector, closely tied in with the fortunes of both established and newly emerging economies. In doing so, it covers issues related to manufacturing, both established practices as well as new developments; issues relating to distribution, marketing and retail, vehicle technologies and regulatory trends; and, crucially, labour practices and the people who build cars. In all this it explains both how the current situation arose and also likely future trajectories both in terms of social and regulatory trends, as the technological, marketing and labour practice responses to those, leading in many cases to the development of new business models. Key features Provides a global overview of the automotive industry, covering its current state and considering future challenges Contains contributions from international specialists in the automotive sector Presents current research and sets this in an historical and broader industry context Covers threats to the industry, including globalization, economic and environmental sustainability The Global Automotive Industry is a must-have reference for researchers and practitioners in the automotive industry and is an excellent source of information for business schools, governments, and graduate and undergraduate students in automotive engineering.

Book Outsourcing Vs Insourcing in the Automotive Industry The Role and Concepts of Suppliers

Download or read book Outsourcing Vs Insourcing in the Automotive Industry The Role and Concepts of Suppliers written by Christian Nitschke and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, grade: 2,0, Stellenbosch Universitiy, course: Operations Management, 78 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The research report takes an in-depth look at the automotive industry and their major participants in the upstream value chain. The different parties involved are the automotive manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers. The overall goal of the following report is to identify suitable business models for small to medium sized (SME) automotive suppliers. As the automotive value chain currently undergoes an evolutionary change towards a diminishing vertical integration of the OEMs, it becomes a challenging issue to reconfigure the responsibilities of the suppliers. Thereby OEMs and their suppliers have to cope with a shift from a functional to a process orientated value chain. During this reorganization of the OEM-supplier interface, enterprises realign their strategic intent towards their core competencies as well. Besides the shifting value chain, both suppliers and OEMs have to cope with a consolidation in their industries. This consolidation is impacted by stagnating traditional markets, an ongoing globalization of the value chain, and an increasing productivity pressure in the automotive industry. Looking at the automotive supplier, it becomes obvious that the suppliers are on the one hand challenged by productivity pressures and on the other hand have the opportunity to take over more business of the automotive value chain. The growth potential requires changes in the area of supply chain management and new types of collaboration in the supply network. This prospective development is mainly influenced by a trend towards the outsourcing of entire processes by the OEMs and the increasing need for future innovations in the automotive industry. After discussing the above mentioned issues, the report analyses the role of suppliers with res

Book Automotive Industry Analysis The Chinese and American Market Competitors

Download or read book Automotive Industry Analysis The Chinese and American Market Competitors written by Jan Kachelmaier and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Industrial Management, grade: 3,7 (93%), California State University, Fullerton, language: English, abstract: The paper analysis the automotive industry in general as well as the relative position of the Volkswagen AG. Furthermore, VW's competitors are assessed and recommendations for actions are formulated. In the beginning the creation of the automobile seemed less of a need and more of a luxury, as the cars could only be afforded by the well off. The very first steam car took to the road in France in 1768 – but Cugnot's novel idea did not trigger the beginning of the car industry. After Henry Ford’s model made its debut, owning a car was a symbol of status, because it could only be afforded by the wealthy. Once the process of Henry Ford’s mass production was introduced, cars could be afforded by a wider dynamic of people, and ownership became an affordable growing trend. The production of automobiles was a great help to the economy. It provided jobs across industries including positions in steel and machine tool makers for the different metal parts of the car. The increase in the need of supplies and other parts of the car including the battery, head lights, paint, and interior upholstery, were the driving forces for new businesses to thrive. Cars being a part of the everyday norm meant they would need routine car maintenance which became a major source of business. This also led to the increase of petroleum sales as the demanded use of cars increased. When WWII came the US was able to use the jeep for military use, additionally Chrysler reworked the jeep design to create tanks. Moreover, car production in Europe turned its focus from “the people’s car” to cars designed for the military.

Book Analysis of Additive Manufacturing in an Automobile Service Part Supply Chain

Download or read book Analysis of Additive Manufacturing in an Automobile Service Part Supply Chain written by Yijin Wei (S. M.) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional supply chain performance depends on the efficiency of mass production, the availability of productive low cost labor and the geometry and materials of the products. Additive manufacturing, on the other hand, bypasses all these constraints and reduces the number of stages in the supply chain by allowing local production of low volume parts of greater complexity. We develop an approach for assessing the total cost when additive manufacturing is integrated into the service-parts supply chain given a set of inputs that characterize the supply chain. Specifically, we present several simulation and optimization models to help companies decide the end-of-life strategy of low volume service parts. Through sensitivity analysis, we identify regions of parameters where additive manufacturing is preferred. Moreover, we find that service parts with high lost sales unit cost and low fixed and variable additive manufacturing costs are the most suitable for additive manufacturing.

Download or read book BMW Value Chain Analysis written by Marion Maguire and published by . This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly Research Paper from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: A-, Hawai'i Pacific University, course: MBA IT class, 11 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper will analyze how the German car manufacturer BMW derives value from information systems as well as identify the value chain activities that are affected by the identified information systems. Following analysis will be limited to the information systems that provide the greatest value to BMW in form of gaining or maintaining a competitive advantage. BMW, which stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, is a luxury car manufacturer. The headquarters of the BMW group is in Munich, Germany, but the company is present all over the world (BMW Group, 2004). The company built high brand equity over the years through continuous branding efforts and high quality products (Interbrand, 2001). BMW is arguably the most admired carmaker in the world and BMW products inspire near-fanatical loyalty (Kiley, 2004). Michael E. Porter developed the value chain concept in 1985. Porter's value chain provides a systematic means of categorizing activities. At each stage of the value chain there exists an opportunity to contribute positively to the firm's competitive strategy by performing some activity or process in a way that is better than the competitors, and so providing some uniqueness or advantage (Porter, 1985). Value activities can be divided into two broad types, primary activities and support activities (Porter, 1985). There are five generic categories of primary activities involved in competing in any industry: (a) Inbound Logistics, (b) Operations, (c) Outbound logistics, (d) Marketing and Sales, and (e) Services (Porter, 1985). Support activities support the primary activities and can be divided in four generic categories: (a) Procurement, (b) Technology Development, (c) Human Resource Management and (d) Firm Infrastructure (Porter, 1985).

Book Benchmarking Supply Strategies in the Automotive and the Power Tool Industry

Download or read book Benchmarking Supply Strategies in the Automotive and the Power Tool Industry written by Andreas Weth and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1.7, UNITEC New Zealand (Supply Management Institute (SMI)), course: Diplom, 105 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Problem Definition and Scope of the Diploma Thesis The problem which is addressed in this diploma thesis is the research deficit in the field of benchmarking supply and sourcing strategies. As it was stated in the introduction, no academic publication could be identified in which supply or sourcing strategies in the automotive industry are benchmarked with another industry and detailed recommendations for a particular industry are derived. This lack of academic research is related to a general research deficit in the whole field of supply management which was already identified by Wildemann (2000), Van Weele (2002) and Jahns (2005). The whole field of supply management cannot be entirely benchmarked within two industries in a diploma thesis. Because of that and to reduce complexity, the sourcing strategy triangle which is further explained in section 2.4 and shown in the following figure 2 was developed as a benchmarking framework. 1.3 Structure of the Diploma Thesis Firstly, chapter one provides an introduction including the problem definition (section 1.1), background information about the Hilti Corporation (section 1.2) and the structure of the diploma thesis (section 1.3). This is followed by supply management definitions and classifications which are given in chapter two of the thesis; supply management terminologies are defined (section 2.1), a supply strategy is explained in its strategic environment (section 2.2) and different supply management concepts are explained and analyzed (section 2.3). Besides that, also the sourcing strategy triangle which is used for the benchmarking approach is introduced in section 2.4. After that, chapter three includes the benchmarking analysis of the sourcing strategy triangle. In

Book Evaluation of Cooperative Planning in Supply Chains

Download or read book Evaluation of Cooperative Planning in Supply Chains written by Luis Martín Díaz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luis Martín Díaz shows why some companies are still reluctant to cooperate with partners in the supply chain even though it may be advantageous to them. Based on an extensive survey within the European automotive industry, he proposes solutions to this paradox and describes a prototype for the assessment of the added-value of cooperation.
