Book A Prescriptive Analysis of the Indiana Coal Transportation Infrastructure

Download or read book A Prescriptive Analysis of the Indiana Coal Transportation Infrastructure written by Thomas F. Brady and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-15 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the findings of a scoping study of Indiana's coal transportation infrastructure. Throughout the literature search and investigative phases of this project, it was clear that there exists growing awareness of the importance that transportation plays in the domestic coal industry. There is evidence that suggests transportation costs may be higher than the cost of mining coal. Numerous studies suggest that coal transportation can be developed and utilized for significant competitive economic advantage. The Powder River Basin area in Wyoming is a stellar example of how the combination of a large natural resource and careful transportation planning can result in tremendous economic advantage to an area. It is estimated that nearly 40 percent of the coal burned in U.S. power plants comes from this area, which has increased coal production nearly 40 percent since 1997. Significant rail infrastructure investments have been made between this region and the national rail infrastructure making it cost advantageous to ship Wyoming coal nationwide. The objective of this project was to quantitatively examine the coal transportation infrastructure relative to power plant operations in the state of Indiana and construct a computer simulation model that can be used to quantitatively assess rail scenarios. Computer simulation is a tool that can provide proof of concept. Using simulation, railroads can be proposed, constructed, and operated on a computer. Experiments can be conducted to optimize the operations of the scenario.

Book Characterization of Indiana Coals for Potential Underground Coal Gasification Including Subsidence Risk and Hydrology

Download or read book Characterization of Indiana Coals for Potential Underground Coal Gasification Including Subsidence Risk and Hydrology written by Maria Mastalerz and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a compilation of the available data on coal properties, hydrology, and lithologic characteristics in nine areas selected as the most promising for underground coal gasification in southwest Indiana. This report includes tables of coal properties important to underground coal gasification and summaries of individual parameters for the Springfield Coal and the Seelyville Coal, as well as maps of the distributions of selected coal properties. This study indicates that, while much information exists about some of the properties of coal (for example, heating value or ash content), more data are needed on the swelling characteristics of coal, the presence and thickness of clastic partings, and the coal's geomechanical properties to adequately evaluate the potential for underground coal gasification. Newly obtained analyses of geomechanical properties provide valuable data, but more detailed observations and interpretations of the mechanical behavior of the rock column are necessary to better serve numerical simulations of the gasification process.
