Le rattachement au dollar, conçu pour ancrer les anticipations d'inflation, s'est avéré également utile pour ralentir l'appréciation réelle des monnaies en période d'afflux de capitaux. Dans cette thèse, sont décrites les politiques monétaires d'Argentine, du Brésil et du Mexique pendant la période d'ancrage institutionnalisé. Les crises de la fin des années 1990 ont cependant mis en évidence la position fragile des autorités pour soutenir leurs monnaies en cas de retraits massifs de capitaux. Plusieurs analystes en ont conclu que l'Amérique latine devait adopter le dollar comme monnaie officielle. Une plus grande dose d'autonomie pourrait cependant être conservé si l'union monétaire se faisait moyennant la création d'une monnaie supranationale.
