La démarche de la maîtrise des risques est enrichie d'une revue très complète des concepts de défense en profondeur, de couches de protection, de lignes de défense, de fonctions de sécurité et de différentes barrières rarement proposés simultanément. Enfin, le contenu de l'étude de dangers est décrit d'après la base réglementaire de leur guide d'élaboration. Book excerpt: Cette étude s’inscrit dans un projet de l’INERIS dont l’objectif est l’amélioration des moyens de prédiction des conséquences des explosions. L’analyse révèle que des progrès significatifs dans ce domaine ne seront pas possibles tant que ne seront pas mieux précisées les modalités d’interaction d’une flamme de prémélange avec son environnement. La turbulence de l’écoulement n’est pas le seul facteur à modifier les propriétés de la flamme et les conséquences d’une explosion. En effet, la répartition de la réactivité dans le nuage explosif joue un rôle important. Jusqu’alors, généralement, on supposait, parfois implicitement, que le nuage explosif était uniforme et homogène. En pratique, le nuage résulte souvent d’un rejet accidentel d’une substance chimique dans l’air qui conduit à un mélange gazeux non uniforme et donc à des gradients de concentration, de pression, ou de température. A ces gradients, correspondent des répartitions du degré de réactivité et une aptitude plus ou moins grande à réagir. Ces gradients ont une influence sur les conséquences de l’explosion. Nous étudierons les explosions dans des milieux réactifs non-uniformes en situation confinée afin de pouvoir contrôler l’ensemble des paramètres physiques et de comprendre la physique de ces explosions. Il s’agit de mettre en évidence les spécificités du développement de l’explosion (flamme et pression) lorsque le mélange réactif est rendu progressivement non uniforme. Ces travaux font appel à la fois à l’expérience et à la théorie. Il s’agit d’être capable de décrire les relations entre l’évolution de la surface de flamme, sa vitesse, les effets de pression associés et les régimes de propagation atteints.

The book begins with an introductory chapter and proceeds to the topic of blast wave phenomenology, with a discussion on Rankine-Hugoniot equations and the Friedlander equation, used to describe the pressure-time history of a blast wave. Additional topics include arrival time measurement, the initiation of detonation by exploding wires, a discussion of TNT equivalency, and small scale experiments. Gaseous and high explosive detonations are covered as well. The topics and experiments covered were chosen based on the comparison of used scale sizes, from small to large. Each characteristic parameter of blast waves is analyzed and expressed versus scaled distance in terms of energy and mass. Finally, the appendix compiles a number of polynomial laws that will prove indispensable for engineers and researchers.

His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Such flows occur in combustion, chemical lasers, the earth's oceans and atmosphere, and stars and interstellar space. Despite the obvious physical differences in these flows, there is a striking similarity in the forms of their descriptive equations. Thus, the considerations and procedures for constructing numerical models of these systems are also similar, and these similarities can be exploited. Moreover, using the latest technology, what were once difficult and expensive computations can now be done on desktop computers. This book takes account of the explosive growth in computer technology and the greatly increased capacity for solving complex reactive flow problems that have occurred since the first edition of Numerical Simulation of Reactive Flow was published in 1987. It presents algorithms useful for reactive flow simulations, describes trade-offs involved in their use, and gives guidance for building and using models of complex reactive flows.
