Book Voices from the Forest

    Book Details:
  • Author : Malcolm Cairns
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2010-09-30
  • ISBN : 1136522271
  • Pages : 854 pages

Download or read book Voices from the Forest written by Malcolm Cairns and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook of locally based agricultural practices brings together the best of science and farmer experimentation, vividly illustrating the enormous diversity of shifting cultivation systems as well as the power of human ingenuity. Environmentalists have tended to disparage shifting cultivation (sometimes called 'swidden cultivation' or 'slash-and-burn agriculture') as unsustainable due to its supposed role in deforestation and land degradation. However, a growing body of evidence indicates that such indigenous practices, as they have evolved over time, can be highly adaptive to land and ecology. In contrast, 'scientific' agricultural solutions imposed from outside can be far more damaging to the environment. Moreover, these external solutions often fail to recognize the extent to which an agricultural system supports a way of life along with a society's food needs. They do not recognize the degree to which the sustainability of a culture is intimately associated with the sustainability and continuity of its agricultural system. Unprecedented in ambition and scope, Voices from the Forest focuses on successful agricultural strategies of upland farmers. More than 100 scholars from 19 countries--including agricultural economists, ecologists, and anthropologists--collaborated in the analysis of different fallow management typologies, working in conjunction with hundreds of indigenous farmers of different cultures and a broad range of climates, crops, and soil conditions. By sharing this knowledge--and combining it with new scientific and technical advances--the authors hope to make indigenous practices and experience more widely accessible and better understood, not only by researchers and development practitioners, but by other communities of farmers around the world.

Book Southeast Asian Water Environment 1

Download or read book Southeast Asian Water Environment 1 written by S. Ohgaki and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia has undergone rapid commercial and industrial development over the past half century, which continues to bring economic stability and prosperity to its inhabitants. The combined impacts of population growth, urbanization, and industrialization continue to put pressure on the natural resources and the environment. At the same time, globalization is another momentous challenge for the region. Southeast Asian megacities are some of the most dynamic and diverse regions, which are playing a key role in achieving global sustainability. Twelve out of nineteen megacities of the world are located in the region, where highly developed areas coexist with poorly developing areas where large economic growth is expected. The poor quality of the living standards of the latter creates many environmental problems that are major threats to the inhabitants of the region. The Southeast Asian environment has been degraded by the release of industrial and domestic wastes, agricultural and aquacultural chemicals, and pollutants from automobiles. It suffers from water-related disasters, Tsunami, floods, typhoons, etc. In order to deal with these issues an integrated approach from the inhibitants, governments and researchers is essential. The environmental threats arising from the increasing population, overuse of natural resources, industrialization, urbanization, and natural disasters present ever increasing challenges to pursuing sustainable development of the region. Many developed countries such as Japan have experiences of dealing with severe environmental pollution and this publication is the result of building an academic network among researchers of related fields from different regions to exchange information. This book will be an invaluable source of information for all those concerned with achieving global sustainability within the water environment in developing regions, including researchers, policy makers, NGOs and NPOs.

Book Analyzing multilevel governance in Indonesia Lessons for REDD from the study of landuse change in Central and West Kalimantan

Download or read book Analyzing multilevel governance in Indonesia Lessons for REDD from the study of landuse change in Central and West Kalimantan written by Rodd Myers and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who makes land use decisions, how are decisions made, and who influences whom, how and why? This working paper is part of a series based on research studying multilevel decision-making institutions and processes. The series is aimed at providing insight into why efforts to keep forests standing, such as initiatives like Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), are still so far from altering development trajectories. It underlines the importance of understanding the politics of multilevel governance in forest, land and climate policy and practice, and identifies potential ways forward.

Book Carrying Capacity at Kayan and Sembakung Watersheds North Kalimantan Toward Food and Water Provision

Download or read book Carrying Capacity at Kayan and Sembakung Watersheds North Kalimantan Toward Food and Water Provision written by Adi Sutrisno and published by Syiah Kuala University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The utilization and use of natural resources has significantly led to a decrease in the quality and quantity of the environment. This makes the utilization of natural resources must be performed wisely on the basis of the principles of sustainability (carrying capacity) in order that the natural resources owned by the regions can be utilized sustainably for current and future generations. It is hoped that understanding the carrying capacity of the environment becomes the first step for environmental management to realize the quality and quantity of a good environment. Ecosystem Services approach can be used to know the environmental support capacity in a region, including watersheds. Watersheds are often used as a basis for approaches when people want to solve various environmental damage issues, such as the problem of forest damage, erosion, landslides, floods, sedimentation, river water pollution and river shallowing. In Indonesia, there are hundreds of watersheds including Kayan and Sembakung watershed in North Kalimantan that serve as water supply areas and food supply areas. Therefore, this book aims to know the environmental support capacity of Kayan and Sembakung watershed in North Kalimantan Province in the provision of food and the provision of clean water. This book contains a description of the study of environmental support capacity of Kayan and Sembakung watershed in the provision of food and clean water; description of watershed concept, concept of environmental carrying capacity, concept of ecosystem services and concept of environmental carrying capacity based on ecosystem services; description of methods of determining the environmental support capacity of Kayan and Sembakung watershed based on ecosystem services, including the approach of study, scope of territory, materials and tools, data of studies and data analysis; description of the results of the study includes the environmental carrying capacity of Kayan and Sembakung watershed in the provision of food and clean water as well as the tendency of the supporting capacity of the clean water supply of Kayan and Sembakung watershed that becomes the basis for food supply; description of environmental issues, pressures, conditions/circumstances and the responses to Kayan and Sembakung watershed; and so forth. Therefore, this book is presented as one of the scientific reference sources that can be used as reference material for students and lecturers who study the sustainability of ecosystem-based environments.
