Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Este método es aplicado al caso de México para el periodo 2005-2012.English Abstract: Tourism is an economic activity that is considered increasingly important to generate economic growth and combat poverty. However, the relationship between tourism and economic growth is still not as clear. This paper presents the methodology proposed by Ivanov and Webster (2007) to measure the contribution of tourism to economic growth. Additionally, there has been an expansion of this methodology to measure the individual contribution that each of the tourism industries has on economic growth, allowing us to have a broader view of the link between tourism and economic growth. This method is applied to the case of Mexico for the period 2005-2012.

English Abstract: The global tourism industry has had a growing mobility behavior in recent decades. This has enabled countries to generate jobs and economic resources. Mexico has seen a similar pattern, but with some tourist inflow decreases by extraneous economic factors and public health. The aim of this study was to analyze the main variables of tourism in Mexico, and to identify those external factors that have led to reduced tourism in certain years. The analysis period is limited to 1980-2010, which includes significant periods of rise and decline. This economic sector is meaningful to Mexico. We use a literature review as well as an analysis and interpretation of statistics to generate conclusions. Results highlight the importance of the sector, due to the influx of tourists, employment generation, and increased tourist spending. We also note international economic externalities and public health considerations.

Book excerpt: Tourism and development are frequently mentioned together, yet the contribution of tourism to development in the Third World is controversial. This book provides an in depth study of Mexico's experience with the international tourism industry over the last 35 years of the 20th century. Beginning in the 1960s the Mexican government actively sought to export tourism services to foreigners as a conscious development strategy. The book traces government efforts and the developmental outcomes resulting from this policy of "exporting paradise".

Book Mexico s Economy

Download or read book Mexico s Economy written by Robert E. Looney and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1976, I had the privilege of serving on a Stanford Research Institute team engaged in examining various facets of the Mexican economy. That study provided the opportunity to visit many government ministries and talk with some of Mexico's leading economists. These professional experiences stimulated me to undertake full-scale research on the growth potential of the Mexican economy, a subject in which I had long been interested and on which I had written from time to time, beginning with my book Income Distribution Policies and Economic Growth in Semi-Industrialized Countries: A Comparative Study of Iran, Mexico, Brazil, and South Korea. 1 The present volume might be regarded as the culmination of this endeavor. The methodological approach here is partly descriptive and partly empirical-illustrative formal models are built on both qualitative and theoretical foundations. To sharpen the issue and put the Mexican economy in perspective, international comparisons are made through-out.

Download or read book Tequila Tourism as a Factor of Development written by Genoveva Vázquez de la Torre and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose - The main objective of the paper is to establish that Tequila Tourism can be a tool in the economic development of the Jalisco region, linking the product, tequila, the agave landscape, and the fact that the tourist route can be a sign of identity for this tourist market. Design - The need to achieve sustainable rural development, taking into account respect for the environment, along with the creation of wealth and jobs, is would involve both public administrations and companies through the promotion of complementary activities in this rural region; thus, this paper advocates the consolidation of the Tequila Route. Methodology - The proposed methodology develops a theoretical contextualization of the subject of this study - Tequila Tourism - using a Delphi approach with a panel of experts, leading to a SWOT analysis. Approach - This study has been developed using the interpretative approach expert opinion has shed light on the strengths and weaknesses of the Tequila Route as endogenous factors for progress in these rural areas. Finding - This research has established that the enhancement of tequila as a product shows great potential for the development of new tourism practices such as gastronomic tourism. Originality of research - The originality is found in the analysis of the economic potential of introducing Tequila tourism routes in the region of Jalisco, Mexico and providing guidance and ideas for further improvements and research into this important sector of tourism.

Book The Mexican Tourism Sector as a Driver of Shared Growth

Download or read book The Mexican Tourism Sector as a Driver of Shared Growth written by Nelly Aguilera and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this paper is to estimate (with the data available) the impact of tourism as a factor of shared growth at the local or municipal level in Mexico. This country provides an excellent research example due to its socioeconomic characteristics, the fact that tourism is an important economic activity and that, in spite of not having an ideal database to prove empirically that tourism is associated to shared growth, there are reliable databases that combined may provide insightful information. The main findings are: first, tourist destinations in general have better economic conditions that neighbor communities. Second, in general we find that growth in tourism (growth in tourism related employment) is associated to more employment, to lower percentage of population working in social security, and to better figures in the Human Development Index (HDI). It has also been found that growth in maquila and oil industries do not present these positive impacts.

Book Tourism and Economic Development

Download or read book Tourism and Economic Development written by Benjamin Faber and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism is one of the most visible and fastest growing facets of globalization in developing countries. This paper combines a rich collection of Mexican microdata with a quantitative spatial equilibrium model and a new empirical strategy to learn about the long-run economic consequences of tourism. We begin by estimating a number of reduced-form effects on local economic outcomes in today's cross-section of Mexican municipalities. To base these estimates on plausibly exogenous variation in long-term tourism exposure, we exploit geological and oceanographic variation in beach quality along the Mexican coastline to construct instrumental variables. To guide the estimation of the aggregate implications of tourism, we then write down a spatial equilibrium model of trade in goods and tourism services, and use the reduced-form moments to inform its calibration for counterfactual analysis. We find that tourism causes large and significant local economic gains relative to less touristic regions, and that these gains are in part driven by significant positive spillovers on manufacturing production. In the aggregate, however, we find that these local spillovers are largely offset by reductions in agglomeration economies among less touristic regions, so that the national gains from tourism are mainly driven by a classical market integration effect.

Book The Myth of Market Failure

Download or read book The Myth of Market Failure written by Peter Gregory and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes sharp issue with the prevailing perception that Mexican employment conditions have not improved or have even deteriorated over time. It reveals a steady and substantial improvement in the earnings of workers at the bottom of the nonagricultural wage structure and shows that rural-urban migration has caused migrants' earnings to rise signinficantly and has not prevented the rise of urban unskilled wages in general. The findings indicate that estimates of the underutilization of labor are not only grossly exaggerated but also misleading for the formulation of employment policy. The author uses new information to estimate the flow of migrant labor to the United States. His examination of Mexican labor markets shows the unexpected importance of nonagricultural labor for rural household incomes. Finally, he assesses the impact on employment of the recent economic crisis and draws on lessons of the past to advance employment policy prescriptions for the future.
