Book Anaesthesia Intensive Care and Pain Management for the Cancer Patient

Download or read book Anaesthesia Intensive Care and Pain Management for the Cancer Patient written by Paul Farquhar-Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One in three people will develop some kind of cancer in their lifetime. The overall cancer incidence has increased by 25% since 1975. Anaesthetic involvement in hospital interactions has been estimated at around 75%, and so anaesthetists are likely to have major input into the care of the cancer patient. This input may start with the preoperative assessment, but often extends to the intensive care unit and the management of both acute and chronic disease, or procedural related pain. This book is comprised of five main sections dealing with cancer, anaesthesia for cancer surgery, intensive care, pain management and supportive and palliative care. The chapters are authored by acknowledged specialists in their field of cancer patient management. The anaesthesia section discusses not just major surgery but includes the specific and subtle differences that exist in the diverse types of specialist cancer surgery. The pain section deals with the current status of several specific cancer pain problems with contemporary evidence and recent developments in management. This book also introduces novel ways of looking at conventional treatments such as the genetic aspects of opioid use. For a complete understanding of the cancer patient, other aspects of care are also considered, including psychological care and complementary medicines.

Book excerpt: Progress in the field of medicine over the last 50 years has led to important results for society, both in terms of prevention and in the treatment of single or variously associated pathologies. The main objective of modern medicine has been the acquisition of increased skills and highly specialised knowledge in the various disciplines. At the same time, there has been a progressive multidisciplinary and multi-professional interest in acute disease conditions that place the patient in potential or real life-threatening situations. The state of the art of intensive medicine comprises a wide range of sophisticated interventions and collaboration between different medical disciplines, both of which give the patient access to the most advanced forms of treatment that are currently available.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 971 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical care medicine book substantially differs from others due to the range of peculiarities that characterize it. Since it deals with acute patients in critical conditions, this is, as it were, a 'borderline'book,in the sense that it is intended for those, who, in their activity, need a continuous and in-depth interdisciplinary approach to optimize the quality of the treatments offered to critically-ill patients. This book helps to have a better understanding of the current limits of human intervention and aims at supplying updated guidelines; in particular, it is intended for those who, although having to guarantee continuity and top-quality therapies, must decide when and why the collaboration with and intervention by experts is necessary.

Book Regional Anaesthesia Analgesia and Pain Management

Download or read book Regional Anaesthesia Analgesia and Pain Management written by M. Tiengo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local-regional anesthesia and pain therapy represent two areas of common interest for all physicians. A thorough preparation in functional anatomy and general pharmacology, including familiarity with local anesthetics and analgesics, is considered fundamental background for further study or clinical application of such techniques. Knowledge of the mechanisms of action, efficacies and side effects of the relevant drugs is essential, as is appreciation of possible drug interactions to evaluate eventual toxic effects. Local-regional anesthesia and pain management are being increasing used in diverse medical specialties, including those requiring manual dexterity. In contemporary medicine correct evaluation of the medical outcome becomes essential, especially in relation to the cost-benefit balance, not only in terms of the resources consumed, also and more importantly for the quality of life of the patient.

Book Textbook of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management

Download or read book Textbook of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management written by Liam Donaldson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementing safety practices in healthcare saves lives and improves the quality of care: it is therefore vital to apply good clinical practices, such as the WHO surgical checklist, to adopt the most appropriate measures for the prevention of assistance-related risks, and to identify the potential ones using tools such as reporting & learning systems. The culture of safety in the care environment and of human factors influencing it should be developed from the beginning of medical studies and in the first years of professional practice, in order to have the maximum impact on clinicians' and nurses' behavior. Medical errors tend to vary with the level of proficiency and experience, and this must be taken into account in adverse events prevention. Human factors assume a decisive importance in resilient organizations, and an understanding of risk control and containment is fundamental for all medical and surgical specialties. This open access book offers recommendations and examples of how to improve patient safety by changing practices, introducing organizational and technological innovations, and creating effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care systems, in order to spread the quality and patient safety culture among the new generation of healthcare professionals, and is intended for residents and young professionals in different clinical specialties.

Book Handbook of Communication in Anaesthesia Pain Management and Intensive Care

Download or read book Handbook of Communication in Anaesthesia Pain Management and Intensive Care written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-16 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication in anaesthesia, pain management, and intensive care can have profound impacts on patients and healthcare colleagues. Good communication can result in better patient outcomes and experiences of the hospital setting, whereas poor communication is frequently at the heart of adverse incidents, complaints, and litigation. This handbook outlines two model frameworks to improve communication: one to give structure to an interaction and one that explores language structures and the layers of meaning to our words. The frameworks are essential tools for communicating with children, obstetric patients, and those with needle phobia. A practical guide, the book is packed with useful tips to enhance interactions with both patients and colleagues. Numerous examples and vignettes clearly demonstrate ideas that will improve patient care, safety, and bring out the best in everyone around. Fully updated with new clinical guidelines and literature, the second edition includes new chapters on how to talk to patients in pain, featuring motivational interviewing techniques, and on social media. Increased coverage of managing challenging situations, includes communicating with distressed relatives, dealing with complaints, and working with interpreters. The contributors and editors are senior clinicians from North America, Europe, and Australasia, working at the coalface of perioperative and critical care. Blending theory, science, and practicality, this book complements resources for communication skills teaching in anaesthesia and other related professional groups.

Book Anesthesiology and Pain Management

Download or read book Anesthesiology and Pain Management written by T.H. Stanley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore H. Stanley, M.D. Anesthesiology and Pain Management contains the Refresher Course manuscripts of the presentations of the 36th Annual Postgraduate Course in Anesthesiology which took place at The Cliff Conference Center in Snowbird, Utah, February 22-26, 1991. The chapters reflect new data and concepts within the general framework of "pain research and basic science," "clinical topics in pain management." The purposes of the textbook are to 1) act as a reference for the anesthesiologists attending the meeting, and 2) serve as a vehicle to bring many of the latest concepts in anesthesiology to others within a short time of the formal presentation. Each chapter is a brief but sharply focused glimpse of the interests in anesthesia expressed at the conference. This book and its chapters should not be considered complete treatises on the subjects addressed but rather attempts to summarize the most salient points. This textbook is the ninth in a continuing series documenting the proceedings of the Postgraduate Course in Salt Lake City. We hope that this and the past and future volumes reflect the rapid and continuing evolution of anesthesiology in the late twentieth century. ix list of Contributors Ashburn, Michael A.
