Book Anadromous Cataloging and Fish Inventory in Lakes Draining to Cook Inlet and Bristol Bay

Download or read book Anadromous Cataloging and Fish Inventory in Lakes Draining to Cook Inlet and Bristol Bay written by James Bales and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state has multiple administrative tools to protect fish habitat. Alaska Statute (AS) 16.05.871 (the Anadromous Fish Act), along with the Fishway Act (AS 16.05.841, which requires that fish passage be maintained in any stream "frequented by salmon or other fish"), constitute Alaska's strongest and most comprehensive in-stream fish-habitat protection standards. The Anadromous Fish Act requires ADF&G to "specify the various rivers, lakes and streams or parts of them" of the state that are important to the spawning, rearing or migration of anadromous fish. A central goal of this project is to inventory fish assemblages, not individual species or selected species groups. Documenting aquatic and riparian habitat characteristics at fish-collection lakes also provides baseline information for comparison with future studies, and may also contribute to improved understanding of fish-habitat associations. The overall goal of the AFFI program is to provide information needed for management of the freshwater habitats that support Alaska's anadromous and freshwater-resident fish stocks.

Book Fish Inventory and Anadromous Cataloging in Eastern Norton Sound Drainages 2009

Download or read book Fish Inventory and Anadromous Cataloging in Eastern Norton Sound Drainages 2009 written by Jonathan M. Kirsch and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During August 20-25, 2009, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management, Anchorage Field Office, conducted an inventory of fish assemblages and associated aquatic and riparian habitats in an 11,300 square-km study area comprising Norton Sound drainages between the Shaktoolik and Klikitarik rivers. Thirty-three study sites were visited in streams ranging in size from headwaters to the mainstem Unalakleet River. At each site, data were collected describing site location, aquatic habitat, riparian vegetation, and fish-assemblage composition. Fish were collected primarily using backpack and boat-mounted electrofishers. In total, 11 fish species, representing 7 genera and 4 families, were identified. Anadromous fish were documented at 20 study sites. As a result of this inventory, a total stream length of 165 km of previously unlisted anadromous fish habitat was added to the State of Alaska's Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes.

Some 145 study sites were visited in streams ranging in size from wadeable headwaters to the mainstem Chandalar River. At each site, data was collected describing site location, aquatic habitat, riparian vegetation, and fish-assemblage composition. Fish were collected primarily using backpack and boat-mounted electrofishers. In total, 11 fish species, representing 10 genuses, and 6 families were found. Anadromous fish were documented at 17 study sites. As a result of this inventory, a total stream length of 130 km. of previously unlisted anadromous fish habitat was added to the State of Alaska's "Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes."

Book Anadromous Cataloging and Fish Inventory in Drainages of the Copper and Bering Rivers 2023 and 2024

Download or read book Anadromous Cataloging and Fish Inventory in Drainages of the Copper and Bering Rivers 2023 and 2024 written by Nate Cathcart and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2023 and 2024, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Division of Sport Fish will base out of the communities of Glenallen and Cordova to inventory stream fish assemblages and associated aquatic riparian habitats in an 80,879 km study area selected to include the Copper River and Bering River watersheds in southcentral Alaska. We identified >200 potential target sites on smaller headwater and slightly larger un-wadeable streams from which we anticipate sampling approximately 72 headwater streams and 4 un-wadeable streams annually (152 total sites in 2023 and 2024). At each site, prior to conducting electrofishing activities, we will collect data describing location, water quality, stream characteristics, aquatic habitat, and riparian vegetation. Fish will be collected primarily using backpack and raft-mounted electrofishing equipment and minnow traps. Anadromous fish assemblage information collected will be used to nominate waters to the State of Alaska’s Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes, or to update fish life stage information for waters already in the catalog. All sampling data will be available via the ADF&G Fish Resource Monitor - Fish Inventory online mapping service.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 1291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During August 2003 and July-August 2011, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish conducted an inventory of stream fish assemblages and associated aquatic and riparian habitats in a 53,445 square-km. study area comprising the upper Cook Inlet basin bounded by the Alaska Range to the north and west, the Chugach Mountains to the south, and the Copper River basin to the east. (In addition to the Susitna River watershed, this included Maguire Creek and the watersheds of the Matanuska and Knik rivers.) Some 357 study sites were visited in streams ranging in size from wadeable headwaters to the mainstem Susitna River. At each site, data was collected describing site location, aquatic habitat, riparian vegetation, and fish-assemblage composition. Fish were collected primarily using backpack and boat-mounted electrofishers. In total, 19 fish species, representing 12 genuses, and 7 families were found. Anadromous fish were documented at 114 study sites. As a result of this inventory, a total stream length of 830 km. of previously unlisted anadromous fish habitat was added to the State of Alaska's "Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes." The primary fish-collection gear type used was single-pass electrofishing.
