Book excerpt: "Anacreon is one of the most important of the Greek archaic lyric poets and has enjoyed a rich reception in both ancient and modern Europe, from Horace in Rome to the so-called Anacreontic poets in modern Europe (among them Abraham Cowley and Robert Herrick in England, and the young Goethe in Germany). However, despite his importance within the classical canon, there has been no full-scale commentary on the fragments of Anacreon in recent decades (with the exception of a single commentary in modern Greek). The two volumes seek to address this gap in scholarship by providing a detailed and up-to-date commentary on all the known fragments of Anacreon alongside a freshly edited text, critical apparatus, and a new translation. The commentary to reconstruct the context of the fragments, shedding light on Anacreon's relation to earlier poets and discussing a variety of aspects of his work, including language, style, narratological analysis, intertextuality, and performance. Close attention has been paid to Anacreon's elaborate poetic language and use of imagery, especially in the representation of paradoxical emotions: the analysis systematically applies the refined tools developed in recent studies on the language of archaic poetry in order to describe and explain these phenomena, while recent findings in the history of religion and classical archaeology have been brought to bear on his representation of the gods. Fresh interpretation of the papyrus fragments has been particularly fruitful as new material has come to light and fundamentally changed our perception of Anacreon: these show that besides familiar topics such as love, the symposium, and observations of everyday life, more unexpected themes such as the Demeter-cult numbered among his concerns and played a significant role in his poetry"--

Book excerpt: In 1554 the scholar and printer Henri Estienne published what he believed to be the odes of the ancient Greek poet Anacreon. These odes, known today as the Anacreonta, were in fact pseudonymous publications. Yet such was the enduring popularity of these poems that when Francis Scott Key composed "The Star-Spangled Banner" he used the tune of a popular contemporary song, "To Anacreon in Heaven." In Anacreon Redivivus, John O'Brien examines neo-Latin and vernacular translations of the Anacreonta in the French Renaissance during the two years following their publication. He deals with the context and theory of Renaissance translation before concentrating on the major Renaissance authors who found the Anacreonta attractive: Pierre de Ronsard and Remy Belleau, Henri Estienne and Elie Andri. This study emphasizes the interpenetration of vernacular and neo-Latin cultures in Renaissance France in terms of their shared literary techniques. O'Brien argues that these techniques created a literary Alexandrianism which was in turn perceived as characteristic of the Anacreonta. The book shows how terms such as simplicity, lightness, and mignardise all contributed to the "identity" of pseudo-Anacreon, and it considers how translation played a role in this enterprise. The first detailed study of Anacreontic translation in Renaissance France, Anacreon Redivivus will interest students and scholars in modern languages, classics, and comparative literature. It focuses first on the original fragments of Anacreon and their reception in Horace, paying attention to the central themes of wine, love, and satire. In a second part, the possibility of conscious Horatian reception of the earliest Carmina Anacreontea (and the broader Anacreontic tradition) as distinct from the original is discussed and shown to be highly probable. This imitation of imitation can be labelled, in Gérard Genette's words, as "literature in the third degree". As a significant predecessor of Horace, Anacreon can be described as no less than the central pivot between Archilochus and Hipponax, on the one hand, and Alcaeus and Sappho, on the other. He represents the tie between Horace's iambic and lyric personae and is thus a much more encompassing predecessor than any one of the other four above-mentioned counterparts.
