Book Critical Phenomena at Surfaces and Interfaces

Download or read book Critical Phenomena at Surfaces and Interfaces written by Helmut Dosch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the application of grazing angle x-ray and neutron scattering to the study of surface-induced critical phenomena. With the advent of even more advanced synchrotron radiation sources and new sophisticated instrumentation this novel technique is expected to experience a boom. The comprehensive and detailed presentation of theoretical and experimental aspects of the scattering of evanascent x-ray and neutron waves inside a solid makes this book particularly useful for tutorial courses. Particular emphasis is put on the use of this technique to extract microscopic information (correlation functions) from the real structure of a surface, from buried and magnetic interfaces and from surface roughness.

Book excerpt: Understanding and manipulating the properties of materials naturally occurring in our world and artificially produced by modern technologies requires detailed information on their properties on the atomic scale. This information is the basis for any kind of research in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, metallurgy, and ceramics. Among the various experimental methods, neutron and photon scattering have become the key techniques of choice. This book provides an overview of the complementarity between neutron and synchrotron x-ray scattering. The most important topics are covered, including structure determination, magnetic correlations, polymer dynamics, thin films and multilayers, photoemission studies, etc; they are thoroughly introduced and discussed by experts from both the experimental and the theoretical side.

Book Using X ray and Neutron Scattering to Study the Dynamics of Low dimensional Systems

Download or read book Using X ray and Neutron Scattering to Study the Dynamics of Low dimensional Systems written by A. C. Walters and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical and experimental study of low-dimensional systems has dominated much of modern condensed matter physics. Such systems present a range of different phenomena which are not observed in more isotropic, three-dimensional materials. This thesis constitutes the study of the excitations of two types of low-dimensional system: the magnetic excitations in the one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic chain compound Sr2CuO3 as studied using inelastic neutron scattering, and the phonons in quasi-two-dimensional graphite intercalation compounds CaC6 and BaC6 studied using inelastic X-ray scattering. Initially an introduction to the vast field of low-dimensional systems is provided, followed by a description of the neutron and X-ray scattering technique. Spinon excitations in Sr2CuO3 have been measured up to ≈ 600 meV, and are found to be well-described by the Heisenberg model. A new version of the magnetic form factor for Cu2+ in Sr2CuO3 provides an explanation for the considerable reduction in the measured inelastic neutron scattering intensity, which may have significant consequences for past and future work on other related materials. The phonons in superconducting CaC6 (Tc = 11.5 K) are found to be in reasonable agreement with Density Functional Perturbation Theory calculations, but the measured dispersions in non-superconducting BaC6 are significantly different to those predicted. No direct evidence for electron-phonon coupling is found in either compound. It is concluded that the X-ray data supports the validity of the theoretical description of CaC6, but the use of significantly inaccurate lattice parameters for BaC6 in the calculation may provide an explanation of the poor agreement in this case.

Book excerpt: Lattice Dynamics covers the proceedings of the 1963 International Conference on Lattice Dynamics, held at the H.C. Ørsted Institute of the University of Copenhagen on August 5-9. This book is composed of seven parts that focus on a better fundamental understanding of the interactions between atoms in solids and their role in lattice dynamics. The major topics covered include phonon dispersion curves, anharmonic effects, optical and dielectric effects, influence of defects on lattice vibrations, elasticity, and developments. Papers on the study of vibrational spectra by infrared absorption, X-ray and neutron scattering and the electron tunneling effects as well as papers on the influence of defects and on a variety of other problems in lattice dynamics are included. This book will prove useful to applied physicists and researchers in the field and related fields of lattice dynamics.

Book Ferroelectrics Literature Index

Download or read book Ferroelectrics Literature Index written by T. F. Connolly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.

Book Principles of Neutron Scattering from Condensed Matter

Download or read book Principles of Neutron Scattering from Condensed Matter written by and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron scattering is arguably the most powerful technique available for looking inside materials and seeing what the atoms are doing. This textbook provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the many different ways neutrons are being used to investigate the behaviour of atoms and molecules in bulk matter. It is written in a pedagogical style, and includes many examples and exercises. Every year, thousands of experiments are performed at neutron scattering facilities around the world, exploring phenomena in physics, chemistry, materials science, as well as in interdisciplinary areas such as biology, materials engineering, and cultural heritage. This book fulfils a need for a modern and pedagogical treatment of the principles behind the various different neutron techniques, in order to provide scientists with the essential formal tools to design their experiments and interpret the results. The book will be of particular interest to researchers using neutrons to study the atomic-scale structure and dynamics in crystalline solids, simple liquids and molecular fluids by diffraction techniques, including small-angle scattering and reflectometry, and by spectroscopic methods, ranging from conventional techniques for inelastic and quasielastic scattering to neutron spin-echo and Compton scattering. A comprehensive treatment of magnetic neutron scattering is given, including the many and diverse applications of polarized neutrons.

Book Studying Atomic Dynamics with Coherent X rays

Download or read book Studying Atomic Dynamics with Coherent X rays written by Michael Leitner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffusion in solids at moderate temperatures is a well-known phenomenon. However, direct experimental evidence about the responsible atomic-scale mechanisms has been scarce, due to difficulties in probing the relevant length- and time-scales. The present thesis deals with the application of X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) for answering such questions. This is an established method for the study of slow dynamics on length-scales of a few nanometres. The scattered intensity in the diffuse regime, i.e. corresponding to atomic distances, is very low, however, and so it has so far been considered impossible to use XPCS for this problem. Threefold progress is reported in this work: It proposes a number of systems selected for high diffuse intensity, it optimizes the photon detection and data evaluation procedures, and it establishes theoretical models for interpretating the results. Together these advances allowed the first successful atomic-scale XPCS experiment, which elucidated the role of preferred configurations for atomic jumps in a copper-gold alloy. The growth in available coherent X-ray intensity together with next-generation X-ray sources will open up a wide field of application for this new method.
