Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry and chemical engineering have changed significantly in the last decade. They have broadened their scopeâ€"into biology, nanotechnology, materials science, computation, and advanced methods of process systems engineering and controlâ€"so much that the programs in most chemistry and chemical engineering departments now barely resemble the classical notion of chemistry. Beyond the Molecular Frontier brings together research, discovery, and invention across the entire spectrum of the chemical sciencesâ€"from fundamental, molecular-level chemistry to large-scale chemical processing technology. This reflects the way the field has evolved, the synergy at universities between research and education in chemistry and chemical engineering, and the way chemists and chemical engineers work together in industry. The astonishing developments in science and engineering during the 20th century have made it possible to dream of new goals that might previously have been considered unthinkable. This book identifies the key opportunities and challenges for the chemical sciences, from basic research to societal needs and from terrorism defense to environmental protection, and it looks at the ways in which chemists and chemical engineers can work together to contribute to an improved future.

This book was released on 1959 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method whereby the molecules to be studied can be crystallized in structures whose X-ray analysis would be certain of success is discussed. The method is described under the title of ''crystal engineering'' or ''crystal design ing''. In essence, the method involves precipitation in crystalline form of the organic molecules, generally in ionic form, but diluted structurally by sizable groups of atoms of the class known as complex ions, which dominate the packing of the structures. The structure of these complex ions is generally known, and in any case readily determinable. They contain heavier atoms of the sort necessary both for application of the classical ''heavy-atom'' x-ray method. The entire complec ion is very effective in establishing phases of the scattered x-rays, and thus in analyzing the entire structure. The organic ions are always located in spaces between the complex ions, simplifying analysis. A new method of crystal analysis is reported by means of which structure and absolute configuration of a non-centric crystal can be determined. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to analyzing the structures and properties of organic molecules Until recently, the study of organic molecules has traveled down two disparate intellectual paths—the experimental, or physical, method and the computational, or theoretical, method. Working somewhat independently of each other, these disciplines have guided research for decades, but they are now being combined efficiently into one unified strategy. Molecular Structure delivers the essential fundamentals on both the experimental and computational methods, then goes further to show how these approaches can join forces to produce more effective analysis of the structure and properties of organic compounds by: Looking at experimental structures: electron, neutron, X-ray diffraction, and microwave spectroscopy as well as computational structures: ab initio, semi-empirical molecular orbital, and molecular mechanics calculations Discussing various electronic effects, particularly stereoelectronic effects, including hyperconjugation, negative hyperconjugation, the Bohlmann and anomeric effects, and how and why these cause changes in structures and properties of molecules Illustrating complex carbohydrate effects such as the gauche effect, the delta-two effect, and the external anomeric torsional effect Covering hydrogen bonding, the CH bond, and how energies, especially heats of formation, can be affected Using molecular mechanics to tie all of these things together in the familiar language of the organic chemist, valence bond pictures Authored by a founding father of computational chemistry, Molecular Structure broadens the scope of the subject by serving as a pioneering guide for workers in the fields of organic, biological, and computational chemistry, as they explore new possibilities to advance their discoveries. This work will also be of interest to many of those in tangential or dependent fields, including medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacology.

Book X ray Structure Determinations of Some Compounds of Interest in Analytical Chemistry

Download or read book X ray Structure Determinations of Some Compounds of Interest in Analytical Chemistry written by Lynne Lionel Merritt and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is given of the structures of analytically important chelate complexes and chelating molecules which have been determined by x-ray diffraction methods. The dimethylglyoxime molecule first rotates 180 deg about the central short C-C bond. This bond has about 25% double-bond character and some energy is therefore required. The central bond is then stretched by 0.09 A and the C-N bond is shortened by about 0.04 A.A very strong H bond, which is believed to be symmetrical, is formed between each pair of O atoms. When proper force constants are known, energies induced by these distortions can be calculated. The structure of Zn 8-quinolinolate dihydrate was determined. When a Zn ion solution is treated with 8-quinolinol and the solution is neutralized, the dihydrate precipitates. The crystal system is monoclinic with a = 11.28 A, b = 5.42 A, c = 13.16 A, and beta = 106 deg 18 min. Observations on the effects of structure of organic molecules on the formation and stability of complexes, suggest that the distance between reacting groups may not be as important as previously supposed, because considerable distortion can occur.
