Book Uplifting the Race

Download or read book Uplifting the Race written by Kevin K. Gaines and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amidst the violent racism prevalent at the turn of the twentieth century, African American cultural elites, struggling to articulate a positive black identity, developed a middle-class ideology of racial uplift. Insisting that they were truly representative of the race's potential, black elites espoused an ethos of self-help and service to the black masses and distinguished themselves from the black majority as agents of civilization; hence the phrase 'uplifting the race.' A central assumption of racial uplift ideology was that African Americans' material and moral progress would diminish white racism. But Kevin Gaines argues that, in its emphasis on class distinctions and patriarchal authority, racial uplift ideology was tied to pejorative notions of racial pathology and thus was limited as a force against white prejudice. Drawing on the work of W. E. B. Du Bois, Anna Julia Cooper, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Hubert H. Harrison, and others, Gaines focuses on the intersections between race and gender in both racial uplift ideology and black nationalist thought, showing that the meaning of uplift was intensely contested even among those who shared its aims. Ultimately, elite conceptions of the ideology retreated from more democratic visions of uplift as social advancement, leaving a legacy that narrows our conceptions of rights, citizenship, and social justice.

If you can’t bear to watch the news lately, you’re not alone. Luckily, Ione Butler is here to offer you an alternative—and maybe even restore your faith in humanity. As the founder of Uplifting Content, a social media platform followed by over 1.4 million people, she has interviewed some of the most inspiring people in the world. Here, she shares their remarkable stories and the lessons they’ve learned to help you through life’s many challenges. Among the amazing folks you’ll meet is Kyle Maynard, a motivational speaker and the first quadruple amputee to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro without the aid of prosthetics—thanks to his “no excuses” attitude. You’ll also meet Destiny Watford, a high school student whose passionate activism helped save her town, once dubbed “the most polluted zip code in America,” and Kouhyar Mostashfi and Greg Smith, two men from Ohio with completely opposing political views who have done the seemingly impossible and set aside their differences to become great friends. At the end of each story, you’ll also find exercises to help you take action in your own life—whether by asking deeper questions about what’s important to you, forging new connections and nurturing existing relationships, or reflecting on the contributions you wish to make in the world. The stories explore themes like human connection, service to others, and the pursuit of passion. Butler, who struggled with depression herself, firmly believes that focusing on the good in the world helped bring her back from the brink. Uplifting Stories reminds you that the world is still full of great people—even if their voices sometimes get lost in the noise.

This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can I have hope in what appears to be a hopeless situation? Is the question confronting a vast number of Christians today. As Christians, we know all of the right words to say when an unexpected storm enters our life, but living what we profess becomes a challenge when it appears that God is not hearing our prayers. I have learned that it is easy to trust God when life is going well. However, can we trust Him when we find ourselves in the midst of a storm and Jesus appears to be sleeping? As such, the ultimate purpose of this book is to encourage others that they must never allow their situation to cause them to give up on God, because God doesnt give up on us. Therefore, it is because of the life of Christ and this situation that I have transitioned from asking Why me? to Why not me?

Book Doughboys on the Great War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edward A. Gutiérrez
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 2017-01-20
  • ISBN : 0700624449
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Doughboys on the Great War written by Edward A. Gutiérrez and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It is impossible to reproduce the state of mind of the men who waged war in 1917 and 1918,” Edward Coffman wrote in The War to End All Wars. In Doughboys on the Great War the voices of thousands of servicemen say otherwise. The majority of soldiers from the American Expeditionary Forces returned from Europe in 1919. Where many were simply asked for basic data, veterans from four states—Utah, Minnesota, Connecticut, and Virginia—were given questionnaires soliciting additional information and “remarks.” Drawing on these questionnaires, completed while memories were still fresh, this book presents a chorus of soldiers’ voices speaking directly of the expectations, motivations, and experiences as infantrymen on the Western Front in World War I. What was it like to kill or maim German soldiers? To see friends killed or maimed by the enemy? To return home after experiencing such violence? Again and again, soldiers wrestle with questions like these, putting into words what only they can tell. They also reflect on why they volunteered, why they fought, what their training was, and how ill-prepared they were for what they found overseas. They describe how they interacted with the civilian populations in England and France, how they saw the rewards and frustrations of occupation duty when they desperately wanted to go home, and—perhaps most significantly—what it all added up to in the end. Together their responses create a vivid and nuanced group portrait of the soldiers who fought with the American Expeditionary Forces on the battlefields of Aisne-Marne, Argonne Forest, Belleau Wood, Chateau-Thierry, the Marne, Metz, Meuse-Argonne, St. Mihiel, Sedan, and Verdun during the First World War. The picture that emerges is often at odds with the popular notion of the disillusioned doughboy. Though hardened and harrowed by combat, the veteran heard here is for the most part proud of his service, service undertaken for duty, honor, and country. In short, a hundred years later, the doughboy once more speaks in his own true voice.
