Book excerpt: The World's consumption of fluorspar is expected to increase from 4,7 million tonnes in 1972 to approximately 6,0 million tonnes in 1975, and to 7,3 million tonnes in 1980. Steelmaking accounts for 56 per cent, the balance being consumed, in order of importance, by the following industries: aluminium, fluorocarbon, uranium enrichment, stainless-steel pickling, and petroleum alkylation. South Africa has the largest proven ore reserves (118 million tonnes containing approximately 30 million tonnes of CaF2) but at present produces only 210 324 tonnes of all grades. However, local producers have realized the future importance of fluorspar and are aware of the indication that South Africa may become the main supplier to the Western World from the middle of the next decade. New plants and extensions to existing plants will probably increase the present capacity from 175 000 tonnes to 410 000 tonnes by 1976. Of this production, 25 per cent may be further processed to agglomerates to be exported as a substitute for metallurgical fluorspar.

Book excerpt: The consumption of all grades of fluorspar in the Western World decreased by 4,7 per cent, from 2,54 million tonnes in 1974 to approximately 2,42 million tonnes in 1975, but is expected to increase from the last quarter of 1976 onwards. In 1975, steelmaking accounted for 53 per cent of the consumption, the balance being consumed, in order of importance, by the following industries: fluorocarbons (25,7 per cent), aluminium (16,0 per cent), stainless-steel pickling (3,2 per cent), petroleum alkylation (1,8 per cent), and uranium enrichment (1,1 per cent). South Africa has the largest proven ore reserves containing approximately 29 million tonnes of CaF2 and, with a production capacity of 420 000 tonnes in 1975, ranks third amongst the fluorspar-producing countries. South African exports of some 123 000 tonnes in 1974 represented 2,6 per cent of World production. It can be expected that, from the mid-1980's onward, South Africa will become a major supplier of fluorspar to the World, since exploitable ore-deposits all over the World face accelerated depletion.

Book excerpt: A brief historical review shows how fluorspar has developed into an important industrial mineral on which the World's steel, aluminium, and fluorocarbon industries depend. The total World demand is expected to increase from 4,9 million to 7,8 million tonnes of fluorspar concentrates by 1980, and the present production level of 4,8 million tonnes will consequently have to be considerably increased if there is to be an equilibrium between supply and demand. Known World reserves have been estimated at approximately 330 million tonnes of ore containing approximately 82 million tonnes of calcium fluoride. This tonnage will meet the projected consumption for at least twenty years, but this period could be extended considerably by any new reserves that are discovered as a result of Worldwide exploration. In view of the remarkable recovery of the World steel industry and the improved situation of the primary aluminium markets, it is considered that the slight over-supply situation will last only to the end of 1974. Available supplies can be expected to meet the short-term projected demand, but, to meet the medium-term demand, additional capacities should be brought on stream during the next two years.
