Book The Tolerance Trap

Download or read book The Tolerance Trap written by Suzanna Danuta Walters and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Glee to gay marriage, from lesbian senators to out gay Marines, we have undoubtedly experienced a seismic shift in attitudes about gays in American politics and culture. Our reigning national story is that a new era of rainbow acceptance is at hand. But dig a bit deeper, and this seemingly brave new gay world is disappointing. For all of the undeniable changes, author Walters argues, the plea for tolerance has sabotaged the full integration of gays into American life. Same-sex marriage is unrecognized and unpopular in the vast majority of states, hate crimes proliferate, and even in the much vaunted "gay friendly" world of Hollywood and celebrity culture, precious few stars are openly gay. She maintains that we are not "almost there," but on the contrary have settled for a watered-down goal of tolerance rather than a robust claim to full civil rights. After all, one "tolerates" unpleasant realities: medicine with strong side effects, a long commute, an annoying relative. Tolerance is not the end goal, but a dead end;.--From publisher description.

Book Untold Story 1946 Naval Mutiny

Download or read book Untold Story 1946 Naval Mutiny written by G D Sharma and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of books have been written on the 1946 Royal Indian Navy Mutiny but the true story of this historic event remains untold with few facts deliberately suppressed. The Inquiry Commission report gave graphic details of mutinous acts at all the naval stations but it awarded no punishment to the guilty. It glossed over the bad conditions of service leading to the mutiny. It recommended no action against naval administration although bad service conditions were stated to be the root cause of mutiny in the Navy. It was an irony of British Naval Justice that the men voicing these bad service conditions were punished under the Naval Discipline Act. This book attempts to bring out a concise version of the composition and administration of the Navy including its sudden expansion during the World War II. The author's long association with naval counter intelligence has helped him to discern some unknown facts of this mutiny which are reflected in this book. It gives the build up and administrative background of Royal Indian Navy and details of mutinous acts in all stations because of which India did not have to fight any more for its freedom. The book, therefore, appropriately bears the title of 'Untold Story-1946 Naval Mutiny, the last war of Independence.'

Book Telling the Untold Story

Download or read book Telling the Untold Story written by Steve Weinberg and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of his own controversial unauthorized biography of Armand Hammer, Steve Weinberg here shows how a new generation of biographers is revealing the lives of powerful individuals in dramatic and important new ways. Trained as investigative journalists, today's writers have entered a domain once dominated by university scholars. Unlike their more academic predecessors, who often wrote nonjudgmental books on the public lives of long-dead individuals, these new biographers are willing to tackle such powerful, living subjects as Nancy Reagan, Henry Kissinger, Hugh Hefner, Pete Rose, and Fidel Castro. Few of these books are adoring. Without cooperation from their subjects, and sometimes under threat of lawsuit, these writers are probing into private lives and enabling readers to make up their own minds about public figures. Tracing the evolution of the craft of biography up to the present day, Weinberg draws on interviews with some of today's best biographers, as well as his own experience with the Hammer biography, to highlight the careers of some of the writers whose work exploded the boundaries of traditional biography. When Robert Caro became the first journalist to win a Pulitzer Prize for Biography for his book on Robert Moses, it marked the dawn of a new approach to the craft. Weinberg also explores the techniques of Philadelphia Inquirer journalists Donald Barlett and James Steele, whose jointly authored biographies of Howard Hughes and Nelson Rockefeller mark another sign of how far the genre of biography has come. The book is enriched by samples of investigative biography at its best, including a scathingly honest profile of the reigning queen of unauthorized biography, KittyKelley, and Calvin Trillin's fascinating New Yorker profile of the Miami Herald's inimitable police reporter Edna Buchanan. "The living of a life is more difficult than the chronicling of it, but the chronicling is certainly no simple task", writes Weinberg. "Telling somebody else's life fully, fairly, and compellingly is probably an impossible task. But it is important to keep pushing the limits of the possible". For writers, reviewers, publishers, and general readers, Telling the Untold Story is a fascinating look at how a new kind of biographer has forever changed our expectations of the genre and continues to push biography to exciting new limits.

Book An Untold Tale of Tolerance

Download or read book An Untold Tale of Tolerance written by Noémi Anna Nagy and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic inflammatory disorders, including various autoimmune diseases and allergies, put a significant burden on our societies. As these conditions stem from a breach in immune tolerance, immune modulation could provide novel avenues for disease prevention or cure. Dendritic cells (DCs) are specialized immune cells that can effectively induce the development of regulatory T cells (Tregs), critical adaptive immune cells for dampening inflammation. Both active metabolites of vitamin D3 (VD3) and retinoic acid (RA) can induce tolerogenic DCs, subsequently fostering a Treg response in vitro. Nanocarriers, such as liposomes or plant-based bioparticles, can be used to combine VD3 or RA with autoantigens or allergens and target these factors simultaneously to DCs in tissue to achieve disease-specific tolerance in vivo. In this thesis, we embarked upon developing a nanocarrier-based vaccine product for future in vivo modulation of DCs. We established negatively charged liposomes as most suitable for administering adjuvants to DCs. We found that various subsets of DCs treated with VD3 or RA, in soluble or liposome-loaded form, induced the development of CD4+ but also CD8+ Tregs in vitro. Furthermore, we established an activating yet hypo-allergenic effect of peanut allergen-loaded bioparticles on DCs. Finally, we present a randomized controlled phase I clinical trial examining the peripheral immune effect of subcutaneous VD3 administration in birch pollen allergic patients. Thus, this thesis encompasses the first steps toward a putative DC-targeted vaccine treating chronic inflammation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the editor of Majesty magazine, Ingrid Seward has developed professional and personal relationships with the royal family. We learn that the Queen tried to welcome Diana into the royal family and that Di failed to grasp the hand of friendship. From the princess herself we hear details of what went on between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. And we glimpse much more about the inner workings of the extended royal family. This book was released on 2024-03-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I have personally witnessed the devastating impact of America's opioid epidemic. For over three decades, I worked in law enforcement and government, often in roles closely associated with the drug crisis. I began as a federal drug prosecutor in Los Angeles and served as the Director of the Office of Counternarcotics Enforcement at the Department of Homeland Security, the Acting Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Director of INTERPOL Washington. With drug overdose deaths at record levels, it has become undeniably evident that change is imperative. Despite substantial investments directed at tackling this issue, a viable solution to liberate Americans from the grip of opioid addiction has remained elusive. Mike, leveraging his expertise in healthcare technology and firsthand experience in addiction treatment, has ingeniously developed technology that sets itself apart from the rest, offering a beacon of hope in the fight against opioid addiction.” Uttam Dhillon Former Acting Administrator, DEA “Opioid Clinical Management is working diligently to leverage technology to reduce the impact of substance use disorders and improve mental health across our nation – a mission we share. As lead author of the landmark Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (Federal Parity Law), I have dedicated my post-congressional career to drive change in our nation’s healthcare system and Mike is just one example of how it can happen.” Hon.
