Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wondrous land of enchantment, Jamaica boasts a climate and terrain as beautiful as anywhere on earth. In addition to possessing a unique beauty, this land can also boast of an unusual people, with a mystical outlook on life. For this is a land of voodoo, of magical chants and mysteries, a place that few tourists can hope to really understand. And one of the mysteries of this realm of magic is unfolded within the pages of this book, The Secret of the Unknown Powers. The author of this book, Buchanan, is a Christian, yet one deeply influenced by the beliefs of his homeland, Jamaica. He has had a hard life, one that has made him particularly open to realizing that there are many things beyond mans understanding. When Buchanan was but a child, his father was wrongly accused of murder. This incident would haunt Buchanan, causing him to go by an assumed name and travel throughout the West Indies and Mexico, hoping no one would discover his identity. During these travels, he began to see visions and have prophetic dreams. Indeed, this true story reads like a novel, but as they say, truth is stranger than fiction. If the fantastic qualities of everyday life, with or without visions, interest you, you will find The Secret of the Unknown Powers enthralling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is algebra? For some, it is an abstract language of x's and y’s. For mathematics majors and professional mathematicians, it is a world of axiomatically defined constructs like groups, rings, and fields. Taming the Unknown considers how these two seemingly different types of algebra evolved and how they relate. Victor Katz and Karen Parshall explore the history of algebra, from its roots in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, China, and India, through its development in the medieval Islamic world and medieval and early modern Europe, to its modern form in the early twentieth century. Defining algebra originally as a collection of techniques for determining unknowns, the authors trace the development of these techniques from geometric beginnings in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and classical Greece. They show how similar problems were tackled in Alexandrian Greece, in China, and in India, then look at how medieval Islamic scholars shifted to an algorithmic stage, which was further developed by medieval and early modern European mathematicians. With the introduction of a flexible and operative symbolism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, algebra entered into a dynamic period characterized by the analytic geometry that could evaluate curves represented by equations in two variables, thereby solving problems in the physics of motion. This new symbolism freed mathematicians to study equations of degrees higher than two and three, ultimately leading to the present abstract era. Taming the Unknown follows algebra’s remarkable growth through different epochs around the globe.

Book Modeling Gateway to the Unknown

Download or read book Modeling Gateway to the Unknown written by Rom Harré and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2004-05-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Daniel Rothbart of George Mason University in Virginia, this book is a collection of Rom Harré's work on modeling in science (particularly physics and psychology). In over 28 authored books and 240 articles and book chapters, Rom Harré of Georgetown University in Washington, DC is a towering figure in philosophy, linguistics, and social psychology. He has inspired a generation of scholars, both for the ways in which his research is carried out and his profound insights. For Harré, the stunning discoveries of research demand a kind of thinking that is found in the construction and control of models. Iconic modeling is pivotal for representing real-world structures, explaining phenomena, manipulating instruments, constructing theories, and acquiring data. This volume in the new Elsevier book series Studies in Multidisciplinarity includes major topics on the structure and function of models, the debates over scientific realism, explanation through analogical modeling, a metaphysics for physics, the rationale for experimentation, and modeling in social encounters. * A multidisciplinary work of sweeping scope about the nature of science * Revolutionary interpretation that challenges conventional wisdom about the character of scientific thinking * Profound insights about fundamental challenges to contemporary physics * Brilliant discoveries into the nature of social interaction and human identity * Presents a rational conception of methods for acquiring knowledge of remote regions of the world * Written by one of the great thinkers of our time.

Book Food Process Engineering

Download or read book Food Process Engineering written by F. Xavier Malcata and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-13 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food Process Engineering: Safety Assurance and Complements pursues a logical sequence of coverage of industrial processing of food and raw material where safety and complementary issues are germane. Measures to guarantee food safety are addressed at start, and the most relevant intrinsic and extrinsic factors are reviewed, followed by description of unit operations that control microbial activity via the supply of heat supply or the removal of heat. Operations prior and posterior are presented, as is the case of handling, cleaning, disinfection and rinsing, and effluent treatment and packaging, complemented by a brief introduction to industrial utilities normally present in a food plant. Key Features: Overviews the technological issues encompassing properties of food products Provides comprehensive mathematical simulation of food processes Analyzes the engineering of foods at large, and safety and complementary operations in particular, with systematic derivation of all relevant formulae Discusses equipment features required by the underlying processes
