Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First-timeTranslation in English - - - The relationship between Christians and Jews has often been very tense, with misunderstandings of Paul's teachings contributing to the problem. Jacques Ellul's careful exegesis of Romans 9-11 demonstrates how God has not rejected Israel. The title is taken from the verse, "Is there some injustice in God?" The answer is a clear "no." God's election simply expanded outward beyond Israel to reach all peoples of the earth. In the end, there will be a reconciliation of Jews and Christians within God's plan of salvation. Written in 1991, three years before Ellul died, An Unjust God? brings a new understanding to a section of Scripture known for its conventional and limited interpretations. One significant feature of the book is Ellul's personal experience of the suffering of Jews under the Nazi regime; and this has direct bearing for the way he links the sufferings of Israel with the sufferings of Jesus. Ellul is then bold enough to say that a major reason why the Jewish people have not accepted Jesus as Messiah is because the Christian Church has not done well to emulate the Jewish Savior of the world.

Book God s Just Desertion of the Unjust and Other Works

Download or read book God s Just Desertion of the Unjust and Other Works written by Hannibal Gammon and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gammon is among the best preachers of the word of God practically applied that you will ever read. In this volume are collected his only surviving three works which, in their varied subject matter, draw the Christian closer to the Lord Jesus Christ. His first sermon is, "God’s Just Desertion of the Unjust," (from Revelation 22:11), showing that it is a comfort to the godly to be mercifully confirmed in holiness, and it is a terror to the wicked to be justly suffered to go on in his wickedness. His second sermon is, "The Praise of a Godly Woman," (from Proverbs 31:30) where he shows that "praise" is a debt that must be paid to those who have the true, "fear of the Lord." The fear of the Lord is the truest nobility, the noblest grace, that can ennoble and extol a man or a woman. Such should be praised for it by man, and by God. His third sermon is, "God’s Smiting to Amendment or to Revengement," (from Isaiah 1:5), where he shows what reasons God uses for professing believers when he strikes them justly for their sin. This is a serious call to true repentance, and those who do not repent spit in the face of God, and revel in self-love. With this, God will be severe. God is great in mercies when he strikes us to this end: that we should sin no more. In each of these three sermons, Gammon's exposition is by far the best treatment on all three subjects. These are works to read and pray through, looking for God to be merciful to further transform the Christian into the image of Jesus Christ. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: Can a justice system that doesn’t protect the poor be considered truly just? We have all heard the phrase, “You have the right to an attorney.” But did you know this is only true for those being accused of a crime in our country, not their victims? Without a legal advocate, innocent victims are left to fend for themselves. The church is called to do justice and love mercy. We are given the example of the Good Samaritan serving a victim in need, no matter the stigmas attached. But how are we to do this amidst the complexities of the current system? Bruce Strom left a successful legal career to start Administer Justice, a nonprofit organization providing free legal care to our most vulnerable neighbors. Gospel Justice calls churches across the nation to transform lives by serving both the spiritual and legal needs of the poor through participation in the Gospel Justice Initiative. It is not only a book for lawyers or pastors, though. Bruce Strom is calling each of us, the whole body of Christ, to join the cause of legal justice for the oppressed.

Book Stewardship and the Kingdom of God

Download or read book Stewardship and the Kingdom of God written by Dennis J. Ireland and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The parable of the unjust steward in Luke 16:1-13 is a unity which teaches faithful stewardship of material possession against an eschatological backdrop. This interpretation is confirmed by examination of the pericope itself and progressively wider levels of context within Luke's Gospel. Chapter one provides a history of recent interpretations of the parable (nineteenth and twentieth centuries) as background for the ensuing study. Detailed exegesis of Luke 16:1-13 itself is found in chapter two. The investigation is broadened in chapter three to include the immediate and broader literary contexts (Luke 15-16 and 9:51-19:44, respectively). Chapter four examines the theological context, in particular the themes of riches and poverty and the kingdom of God. Chapter five summarizes the major conclusions of the book. The book is a thorough summary of the literature on the parable, the central section, and the themes of riches and poverty and eschatology in the third Gospel.

Book Bloody Brutal and Barbaric

Download or read book Bloody Brutal and Barbaric written by William J. Webb and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word Guild Award Shortlist — Biblical Studies Word Guild Best Book Cover Award Association of University Presses Design Show — Book, Jacket, and Covers Christians cannot ignore the intersection of religion and violence, whether contemporary or ancient. In our own Scriptures, war texts that appear to approve of genocidal killings and war rape—forcibly taking female captives for wives—raise hard questions about biblical ethics and the character of God. Have we missed something in our traditional readings? In Bloody, Brutal, and Barbaric? William Webb and Gordon Oeste address the ethics of reading biblical war texts today. Theirs is a biblical-theological reading with an eye to hermeneutical, ethical, canonical, and ancient cultural contexts. Identifying a spectrum of views on war texts ranging from "no ethical problems" to "utterly repulsive," the authors pursue a middle path using a hermeneutic of incremental, redemptive-movement ethics. Instead of trying to force traditional Christian answers to fit contemporary questions, they argue, we must properly connect the traditional answers with the biblical storyline questions that were on the minds of Scripture's original readers. And there are indeed better answers to the ethical problems in the war texts. Woven throughout the Old Testament, a collection of antiwar and subversive war texts suggest that Yahweh's involvement in Israel's warfare required some degree of accommodation to people living in a fallen world. Yet, God's redemptive influence even within the ugliness of ancient warfare shouts loudly about a future hope—a final battle fought with complete and untainted justice by Christ.

Download or read book Building the Body written by Gary L. McIntosh and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as a physically healthy person--at an ideal weight and with good blood pressure and cholesterol numbers--might not actually be fit enough to run a 5k, so churches can appear healthy--with no obvious issues, maintaining a healthy size--and yet not exhibit fitness. A fit church is one that is not satisfied with merely coasting along with no problems. A fit church is actively making disciples, maturing in faith, developing strong leaders, reaching out to the community, and more. Building the Body offers pastors and church leaders twelve characteristics of fit churches and shows them how they can move their church through five levels of fitness, from beginner all the way to elite--just as an athlete, through training and practice, can become the top in his or her class. Includes comparison charts at the end of each chapter so readers can clearly see where their church currently falls and concluding "Complete the Progress Chart" so that they can see what their goals should be for the future.

Download or read book Oddly Unjust written by Larry Hartmann and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believe it or not...The OJ Simpson Trial Gives Us Proof Positive that Jesus the Christ is God's Son! In this book, author Larry Hartmann explores the proof that God exists, the Bible is the truth, and Jesus was indeed God's Son through the lens of the OJ Simpson murder trial. Simpson's trial was seemingly an open and shut murder case with reams of evidence. Yet a Dream Team of lawyers took an impossible case against OJ, with solid evidence and one in seven billion odds that said he did it, and somehow shockingly came away with a not guilty verdict. Oddly Unjust draws the parallel between this famous case and the trial and death sentence of Jesus Christ 2000 years ago. The book examines new evidence that now exists to appeal this oddly unjust verdict. Using big data and statistics as well as proven courtroom logic, the book addresses what the odds say and what the most logical and reasonable alternatives are to the big questions about God, the reliability of the Bible and the claims of Jesus Christ. Read this book and you will better understand both sides of the arguments about God, the Bible, Jesus Christ, and the meaning of life. Whether you are a seeker, a skeptic or a believer, this book will be a thought-provoking journey into the questions of God's existence and the impact of the findings on your life and your eternity. Larry Hartmann is a new voice on the issue of Christian apologetics and faith. He brings a fresh and thought provoking perspective as a marketplace leader and entrepreneur, using data and analytics to address the big questions around the Christian Faith."

Book The Crucifixion of the Warrior God

Download or read book The Crucifixion of the Warrior God written by Gregory A. Boyd and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 1487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dramatic tension confronts every Christian believer and interpreter of Scripture: on the one hand, we encounter images of God commanding and engaging in horrendous violence: one the other hand, we encounter the non-violent teachings and example of Jesus, whose loving, self-sacrificial death and resurrection is held up as the supreme revelation of God’s character in the New Testament. How do we reconcile the tension between these seemingly disparate depictions? Are they even capable of reconciliation? Throughout Christian history, many different answers have been proposed, ranging from the long-rejected explanation that these contrasting depictions are of two entirely different ‘gods’ to recent social and cultural theories of metaphor and narrative representation. The Crucifixion of the Warrior God takes up this dramatic tension and the range of proposed answers in an epic constructive investigation. Over two volumes, renowned theologian and biblical scholar Gregory A. Boyd argues that we must take seriously the full range of Scripture as inspired, including its violent depictions of God. At the same time, we must take just as seriously the absolute centrality of the crucified and risen Christ as the supreme revelation of God. Developing a theological interpretation of Scripture that he labels a “cruciform hermeneutic,” Boyd demonstrates how Scripture’s violent images of God are completely reframed and their violence subverted when they are interpreted through the lens of the cross and resurrection. Indeed, when read through this lens, Boyd argues that these violent depictions can be shown to bear witness to the same self-sacrificial character of God that was supremely revealed on the cross.
