Book Contemporary Romanian Cinema

Download or read book Contemporary Romanian Cinema written by Dominique Nasta and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, audiences worldwide have become familiar with highly acclaimed films from the Romanian New Wave such as 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005), and 12:08 East of Bucharest (2006). However, the hundred or so years of Romanian cinema leading to these accomplishments have been largely overlooked. This book is the first to provide in-depth analyses of essential works ranging from the silent period to contemporary productions. In addition to relevant information on historical and cultural factors influencing contemporary Romanian cinema, this volume covers the careers of daring filmmakers who approached various genres despite fifty years of Communist censorship. An important chapter is dedicated to Lucian Pintilie, whose seminal work, Reconstruction (1969), strongly inspired Romania's 21st-century innovative output. The book's second half closely examines both the 'minimalist' trend (Cristian Mungiu, Cristi Puiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, Radu Muntean) and the younger, but no less inspired, directors who have chosen to go beyond the 1989 revolution paradigm by dealing with the complexities of contemporary Romania.

Book excerpt: Inspiring true stories of ordinary people who have experienced extraordinary miracles—their Higher Power pointing them in a new direction, forever changing the course of their lives. Many of us dream of witnessing a real miracle, an awe-inspiring divine intervention that changes the course of our lives and heightens our belief in a personal and loving God.Yet, we are often so fixated on the idea of an awesome event that we somehow overlook the quiet little miracles that happen to each of us every day.The miracles collected in 50 Quiet Miracles That Changed Lives come in all shapes and forms, from unexpected phone calls to chance meetings. They are small enough to simply produce a warm glow and dramatic enough to create awe and wonder.A father of five witnesses his burning home being saved by bearded strangers with fire extinguishers, who put out the fire and then disappear. A diamond miner in South Africa barely avoids a deadly crash when he is pushed out of a packed elevator at the last minute. A chance meeting leads a woman to the apartment of her closest childhood friend, now dying of AIDS. She helps her friend regain spiritual strength and becomes a surrogate mother to her friend's child. If we allow ourselves to look beyond the glow and focus on the wonder, we will recognize that, in moments such as these, we are in the presence of God.

Download or read book You Can Expect a Miracle written by John Hinwood and published by Eam Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008 with the publication of You Can EXPECT A MIRACLE ... The Book To Change Your Life, the 'ripple effect' was set in motion. This very powerful thought, alongside the magnetic 'Expect A Miracle' Cards, has seen a worldwide movement spring to life. This simple, yet very powerful message has been spread in book stores by the sale of the first book, online with the eBook edition available on Kindle, Smashwords and from our online shop. I had personally handed out over fifty thousand Expect A Miracle cards to people I'd met all over the world in the previous 21 years. Four years on, that number of Expect A Miracle cards I have handed out has grown to over ninety six thousand. Since 2008, thousands of visitors to www.expectamiracle.com have printed hundreds and thousands of 'Expect A Miracle' cards. In Australia over the past year, on a number of occasions, I have had people give me an Expect A Miracle card. When I have shared with them that I'm 'The Miracle Man' and the cards started with me twenty six years ago, they are amazed. On each occasion the person involved has displayed a wonderful attitude of gratitude. In the four years since the book has been published in the US and Australia, it has gone to three printings and been made available in bookstores across the country, on Amazon and many other websites. I enjoyed the personal contact of book signings at Angus & Robertson in Australia, and at Borders and Barnes and Noble in the United States. Probably the best moment for me personally is when so many people I give a card to, no matter what their station in life is, turn the card over to find it blank on the back. After a pause, I say, "Would you like a miracle?" They almost always say, "Oh yes!" The change in state of most individuals on receiving the card, reading the words Expect A Miracle, turning the card over to find no name, no advertising, no gimmick, purely a message of hope, from this an unconditional gift, is heart-rending to witness. Most people move to an enlivened state of well being after reading these three powerful words. For some, who only show a glimmer of hope that it's possible for their life to be even a bit better than it is right now, it can be a hugely uplifting event.
