Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Kate, a new town represented independence. Brexton, New Mexico, was a place where she could finally escape her mother’s control and establish her own seamstress shop. However, the two-faced Mr. Dixon seems intent on threatening her new-found freedom at every turn. Though Kate knows she can deal with an unsavory man like him, she isn’t sure what to do when the handsome but injured Boone Carson arrives in town. This soldier presents a new threat for Kate: one to her broken and guarded heart. While tending to his wounds, Kate finds Boone infuriating and ungrateful; he finds her arrogant and stubborn. But as their impulsive first impressions turn into mutual respect and admiration, they both face a possible future that neither was expecting. For Boone, it could mean a life of love and happiness he never thought he would find after his time fighting in the Civil War. For Kate, it could mean that if she learns to let go of the hurt from her past, she could learn how to trust again and be truly happy. However, when Boone reveals a devastating secret, it isn’t only Mr. Dixon that gets in the way of their deepening relationship. As arrangements from their pasts threaten to tear them apart, Kate and Boone must decide if they will give in to fear or fight for their chance at a fresh start together.

Book Arranging Gershwin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arranging Gershwin, author Ryan Bañagale approaches George Gershwin's iconic piece Rhapsody in Blue not as a composition but as an arrangement -- a status it has in many ways held since its inception in 1924, yet one unconsidered until now. Shifting emphasis away from the notion of the Rhapsody as a static work by a single composer, Bañagale posits a broad vision of the piece that acknowledges the efforts of a variety of collaborators who shaped the Rhapsody as we know it today. Arranging Gershwin sheds new light on familiar musicians such as Leonard Bernstein and Duke Ellington, introduces lesser-known figures such as Ferde Grofé and Larry Adler, and remaps the terrain of this emblematic piece of American music. At the same time, it expands on existing approaches to the study of arrangements -- an emerging and insightful realm of American music studies -- as well as challenges existing and entrenched definitions of composer and composition. Based on a host of newly discovered manuscripts, the book significantly alters existing historical and cultural conceptions of the Rhapsody. With additional forays into visual media, including the commercial advertising of United Airlines and Woody Allen's Manhattan, it moreover exemplifies how arrangements have contributed not only to the iconicity of Gershwin and Rhapsody in Blue, but also to music-making in America -- its people, their pursuits, and their processes.

Download or read book Institutional Arrangement for Social Risk Management and its Impact on Smallholders Commercialization The Case of Mieso and Gumbibordode Districts of West Hararghe Zone Oromia National Regional State Ethiopia written by Aman Kiniso and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2020 in the subject Social Studies (General), grade: A, Haramaya University, language: English, abstract: The major interest of this study was to identify institutional challenges in smallholders’ commercialization, to assess perceived sources of social risks, to analyze factors affecting the choice of institutional arrangements for social risk management; and to evaluate the impact of institutional arrangements on social risk management on smallholder’s commercialization the case of Mieso and Gumbi-Bordode districts of West Hararghe zone of Oromia Regional State. To meet these objectives a total of 382 sampled households were randomly selected from ten kebeles. Descriptive and inferential statistics of principal component analysis, multivariate regression, and propensity score matching (PSM) were employed to achieve these objectives. Social risks are a global phenomenon, having severe and direct implications for society, incurring large-scale influence, depending on the cultural, political, and economic context in which this phenomenon manifests itself. In recent years, a more holistic approach and society-wide arrangements of social risk management that go beyond social protection have become increasingly important to assist individuals and households to better manage multiple social risk factors. Given this, in the West Hararghe zone, pastoralists and agropastoralists often deal with social risks through the market, informal and public arrangements in the case of risks due to different reasons. However, the impact of the institutional arrangements for social risk management has not been well studied and documented.

Book Changing Contours of Work

Download or read book Changing Contours of Work written by Stephen Sweet and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2020-04-24 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors are proud sponsors of the 2020 SAGE Keith Roberts Teaching Innovations Award—enabling graduate students and early career faculty to attend the annual ASA pre-conference teaching and learning workshop. Changing Contours of Work is an exploration of the American workplace in the larger context of an integrated global economy. Presented with engaging vignettes and rich data, this Fourth Edition shows the reader how the "old economy" is now operating within the "new economy" and how that integration shapes the development of work opportunities. Authors Stephen Sweet and Peter Meiksins use an international comparative perspective, revealing the historical transformations of work and identifying the profound effects that these changes have had on lives, jobs, and life chances. This text supports the reader′s understanding of the origins of current problems confronting working people in the new economy, and contributes to a much-needed dialogue about the strategies for liberating workers from poverty, drudgery, discrimination, stress, and exploitation.
