[...] In many ways, it is the active work of this group that has generated much debate on the effectiveness of existing planning processes in the wake of emerging climate change science and ways in which land-use planning might overcome some of the barriers in identifying and responding effectively to the impact and possible future scenarios for the region. [...] For the purposes of this handbook, however, the concept of sustainability will be used in accordance with the widely accepted definition outlined in the United Nation's Brundtland Commission Report: Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. [...] For the purposes of this research project, the New Brunswick planning process is construed as the culmination of provincial policy, provincial legislation, municipal policies and bylaws, and the practice of the planners, planning directors and government actors that regulate land use within the province.
