Book An Overview of SEM Pasifika Assessments in Micronesia

Download or read book An Overview of SEM Pasifika Assessments in Micronesia written by Brooke Nevitt and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the past five years, more than nine socioeconomic assessments have been conducted in Micronesia following Socioeconomic Monitoring Guidelines for Coastal Managers in Pacific Island Countries (SEM-Pasifika). Resource managers and community members in Palau, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia have used this tool to guide local teams through the steps of developing, conducting, analyzing, and communicating an assessment. Results have been used to collect baseline data and inform management on a variety of issues related to resource management. In an effort to bring all of these different assessments together in one document, this report provides a bibliography of the SEM-Pasifika assessments that have been conducted in the region. For each study, I identify the title, author, supporters, assessment objectives and methods used. This is a living document that will be added to as assessments continue to be conducted throughout the region. It is my intention that this information will be useful to people working on regional socioeconomic efforts in Micronesia"--Page 3.

Book Sem Pasifika Socio economic Survey

Download or read book Sem Pasifika Socio economic Survey written by Kesdy Ladore and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "SEM-Pasifika is a set of community-based socioeconomic monitoring guidelines developed specifically for coastal managers in Pacific island countries. Beginning in 2008, several SEM-Pasifika trainings have been carried out across Micronesia. Assessments have taken place in Arno and Jenrok in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Chuuk and Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, and Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. After coordination among Conservation Society of Pohnpei, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Micronesia Conservation Trust (MCT) SEM-Pasifika was able to launch the first training in Pohnpei in 2012 ... The Conservation Society of Pohnpei (CSP) and its partnering agencies selected the community of Metipw in Madolenihmw unanimously to be the target field site. At the invitation of the community's chief, the assessment was requested based on concerns from community members regarding their newly established Marine Protected Area (MPA), Nan Wap. Although the Metipw community is active in resource management, there has not been an official assessment addressing how the MPA is impacting the livelihood of those who live in Metipw, what changes have been seen in traditional conservation practices and what changes the community is observing and making regarding climate change. In addition, the site was selected due to a large-scale development (hotel and casino) being proposed for the vicinity of Metipw. The assessment also worked to identify the community's feelings about this development and its potential impact on their resources"--Executive summary.

It is meant to be used in conjunction with the larger SEM-Pasifika guide and to facilitate the implementation of the MC socioeconomic indicators. As such, these indicators are not intended to stand alone, rather they are meant to be incorporated into socioeconomic monitoring efforts that take place throughout the region. The indicators included in this addendum are those which were agreed upon by the participants at the First MC Challenge Socioeconomic Measures Meeting and should in no way limit the scope of assessments developed for each site"--Purpose of this document.

Book SEM Pasifika

Download or read book SEM Pasifika written by Supin Wongbusarakum and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The initiative to develop these guidelines started in February 2005, following a workshop organized by SPREP and NOAA, which was held to review socioeconomic monitoring efforts already in place in the Pacific. In October 2006, a follow-up meeting was convened, comprising representatives from NOAA, LMMA, SPREP, CRISP, FSPI, GCRMN, and World Fish Center. At this meeting, it was agreed that a set of socioeconomic guidelines for the Pacific should be developed to provide a user-friendly document that synthesizes the existing methods, including Socioeconomic Monitoring Guidelines (SocMon), Locally Marine Managed Area Learning Framework (LMMA-LF, or shortened LF), and Socio-Economic Fisheries Surveys in the Pacific (SFSPI). In May 2007, a workshop was held in Fiji to make final decisions and plans for preparation of the guidelines. In October 2007, the first draft of SEM-Pasifika was launched at the 8th Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas in Papua New Guinea, followed by an intensive training-of-trainers workshop hosting participants from over 10 countries in the Pacific. The feedback from the workshop participants was used to revise the final guidelines"--P. 5.

Book Climate Change and Impacts in the Pacific

Download or read book Climate Change and Impacts in the Pacific written by Lalit Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume addresses the impacts of climate change on Pacific islands, and presents databases and indexes for assessing and adapting to island vulnerabilities. By analyzing susceptibility variables, developing comprehensive vulnerability indexes, and applying GIS techniques, the book's authors demonstrate the particular issues presented by climate change in the islands of the Pacific region, and how these issues may be managed to preserve and improve biodiversity and human livelihoods. The book first introduces the issues specific to island communities, such as high emissions impacts, and discusses the importance of the lithological traits of Pacific islands and how these physical factors relate to climate change impacts. From here, the book aims to analyze the various vulnerabilities of different island sectors, and to formulate a susceptibility index from these variables to be used by government and planning agencies for relief prioritization. Such variables include tropical cyclones, built infrastructures, proximity to coastal areas, agriculture, fisheries and marine resources, groundwater availability, biodiversity, and economic impacts on industries such as tourism. Through the categorization and indexing of these variables, human and physical adaptation measures are proposed, and support solutions are offered to aid the inhabitants of affected island countries. This book is intended for policy makers, academics, and climate change researchers, particularly those dealing with climate change impacts on small islands.

Book Structural Equation Modeling and Natural Systems

Download or read book Structural Equation Modeling and Natural Systems written by James B. Grace and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 2006, presents an introduction to the methodology of structural equation modeling, illustrates its use, and goes on to argue that it has revolutionary implications for the study of natural systems. A major theme of this book is that we have, up to this point, attempted to study systems primarily using methods (such as the univariate model) that were designed only for considering individual processes. Understanding systems requires the capacity to examine simultaneous influences and responses. Structural equation modeling (SEM) has such capabilities. It also possesses many other traits that add strength to its utility as a means of making scientific progress. In light of the capabilities of SEM, it can be argued that much of ecological theory is currently locked in an immature state that impairs its relevance. It is further argued that the principles of SEM are capable of leading to the development and evaluation of multivariate theories of the sort vitally needed for the conservation of natural systems.

Book The Global Findex Database 2017

Download or read book The Global Findex Database 2017 written by Asli Demirguc-Kunt and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.
