Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History The old method of teaching history by as signing a certain number of pages in the text book to be memorized, is, we are glad to be able to say, pretty generally a thing of the past, having been discarded by all progressive educators. The topical method has found favor because it is the method which devel ops the student's individuality, and makes it possible for him to compare the views of differ ent authors, thus doing away with the diffi culty some teachers experience from diversity of text books. It is the best because it teaches the pupil to think and compare as well as to remember facts. When carried to its full de velopment the topical method becomes the outline method, which combines with the ads vantages possessed by the topical method many which it does not possess. Download or read book Outlines of United States History written by C. A. Woody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of United States History: Exponential System This Outline of United States History is designed, when in the hands of teachers, to aid them in the assignment of lessons, to suggest different ways of making the subject interesting to classes, and to help them to a more extended knowledge of History. Its arrangement makes it a valuable aid to the students of History in any grade. It assigns the Topic for their study, and where it was thought beneficial to the student, forms of answers have been given, but in no instance has the author attempted to study lessons for the pupils, realizing that mental development is as much dependent on thought as physical growth on exercise. We have endeavored to make this Outline complete without being technical. The Normal Idea of Instruction has been ever in View in its prepa ration. We detest the idea of assigning lessons by pages, and ignore the practice of close adherence to text-books. No author can incorporate all in one common text upon History, No author is wholly unbiased and without prejudice. Then, to get a full and accurate conception of facts, we must search many works. The Topic Method requires this. It is the true Normal plan. It makes bold and thoughtful students - students in fact, and not parrots; and one idea pupils. They soon learn to question one author until others confirm him. The results of such research and questioning are ever the same. - industrious study hours, live history classes, and bold and accurate students. The history hours for both study and recitation, are always too short, when the teacher is fully imbued with his subject and exercises fair judgment in the assignment of work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of United States History IN writing this book, the author has had in mind the presentation of the essential facts in our history in a clear, brief manner, with such explanations, by means of maps, pictures, and foot-notes, as the size of the work permitted. In its preparation the pupil's point of View and peculiar needs have been kept constantly in mind, and the author wishes to express his gratitude to Miss Ginn for her very helpful suggestions and advice. She also kindly drew many of the maps which are inserted in the text, prepared the topical reviews which follow the several divisions of the book, and devised the questions that are printed in Appendix V. He further wishes to express his obligation to Miss Eva G. Moore for many thoughtful suggestions, and especially for her aid in the preparation of the bio graphical notes and of Appendix IV with its accompanying map. Bibliographies of books of American history which are suitable for school use are now so plentiful that it has not seemed wise to add to the bulk of this volume by the insertion of such lists. Book The United States

Download or read book The United States written by Goldwin Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States: An Outline of Political History, 1492-1871 To an Englishman, particularly if he is visiting America, an outline Of the political history of the United States may not be unwelcome. An American, being familiar with the main facts and the general relations Of parties, would look for details. It is, therefore, for English rather than American readers that this sketch is intended. If it comes into the hands Of an American, his liberality will make allowance for the position of an Englishman who regards the American Commonwealth as the great achieve ment of his race, and looks forward to the voluntary reunion Of the American branches of the race within its pale, yet desires to do justice to the mother country, and to render to her the meed of gratitude which will always be her due. Should this volume find acceptance it may be followed by a companion volume on the same scale, and treating, necessarily with the same succinctness, the recent history of parties, and the questions of the present day. Book A Brief Topical Survey of United States History Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief Topical Survey of United States History Classic Reprint written by Oliver P. Cornman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Topical Survey of United States History This little work has been prepared in response to a general demand for a text-book which could be employed in teaching United States history by means of topical reviews. The topical outlines found in many of our best text-books have proved unsatisfactory as a means of review, since their use does not result in much more than a mere restudy of the original text. In order to present the historical review from new and interesting points of View, many teachers have found it necessary to prepare outlines or syllabi of lectures that their classes may be furnished with definite material for study. The present work is an outgrowth of a series of such notes prepared by the authors for use in their respective schools. Hart's American History Told by Contemporaries (n. Y. 1897 et a work intended to make broad the highways for those who would visit their forefathers. Professor Hart performed a valuable serv ive to the teaching of history in popularizing the use of primary sources, and his reflections upon their place in a general course are fully set forth in his Preface and his Practical Introduction, Vol. I, chaps. I and ii, which are to be read in connection with Section I. In our directions as to the preparation of an historical essay, printed later in this pamphlet, will be found certain remarks on the use of sources in scholarly writing. Side by side with the references to the text and source-book, which must be read, there will be found notations of more detailed narratives and discussions which are recommended as collateral reading. Some One of these books mentioned in each section should be available in the near est public library, and he who hopes here to derive a benefit comparable with that of a first-rate college course must seek them out. On the other hand, it is feasible for those who lack this opportunity to carry on this home study somewhat less extensively and less valuably without them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Men Who Made the Nation: An Outline of United States History From 1760 to 1865 That the unification of the American people is now sufficiently accomplished to warrant the general reader in following up the chief events which have overcome inherent individualism and have by necessity compelled cooperation. That a recital of the events in the nation's career without the persons connected therewith is to the un trained reader an empty stage. However magnificently set, it is lifeless without the players. The making of the nation is the story of the men who made it. That at any given period of affairs one man will be found who is master of the situation, and events natu rally group themselves about him. That the preeminence of one man at any period does not detract from the services of the minor characters, some of whom may become leaders subsequently.
