Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the History and Development of Hand Firearms, From the Earliest Period to About the End of the Fifteenth Century Lated powder had been abandoned for a season, the reason for which is unknown, and resumed at a later period. Possibly the cause of this lies in the structural weakness of the earlier hand-guns. That this was the case with ordnance is tolerably certain, and caused by the imperfect welding together of the strips of iron of which the cannon were composed, rather than from any deficiency in the tensile strength of the iron. In Codex germ. 600, at Munich, a ms. Dating probably towards the end of the second half of the fourteenth century, which will be more particularly referred to later on in these pages, two kinds of gunpowder are mentioned one described as schlecht. Book The Medieval Soldier in the Wars of the Roses

Download or read book The Medieval Soldier in the Wars of the Roses written by Andrew Boardman and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An essential part of the library for anyone interested in the great political and military upheavals in the 15th century.' – Graeme Rimer, Retired Former Academic Director of the Royal Armouries 'A creditable effort to examine a neglected aspect of medieval warfare.' – Jim Bradbury, Cambridge University Press 'Everything you need to know about being a soldier in the Wars of the Roses.' – The Mail Bookshop What was it like to fight in a Wars of the Roses battle? What kind of men fought at St Albans, Northampton, Wakefield, Towton, Tewkesbury and Bosworth? How was the medieval soldier recruited, paid, equipped, fed and billeted? And how was a battle contested once both sides resorted to all-out conflict? First published in 1998, this classic study of the medieval soldier in the Wars of the Roses examines these and other questions using various documentary sources and recent evidence. Eyewitness accounts, contemporary chronicles, personal letters, civic records, archaeology and surviving military equipment are used to paint a fascinating picture of the medieval soldier. Evidence gleaned from the mass war grave found close to the battlefield of Towton in North Yorkshire sheds new light on those that lived and died in the civil wars. But what do we know about the psychology of those involved? And how did soldiers feel about killing their fellow Englishmen? Andrew Boardman explores the grim reality of medieval soldiering on land and sea during this crucial period of aristocratic violence and dynastic upheaval. He makes us question the current historical record, such as it is, and our perceptions of chivalry and warfare in Lancastrian and Yorkist England. The text is supported by many contemporary illustrations, diagrams and maps, making this updated work an indispensable guide to medieval soldiering in the late fifteenth century.

Book The Artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy 1363 1477

Download or read book The Artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy 1363 1477 written by Robert Douglas Smith and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major new exploration of the history and development of gunpowder weapons in the 15th century based on the artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy. The four Valois Dukes of Burgundy created, in little more than a century, a fabulously wealthy and independent state. Their centralised control and chancellery have bequeathed to us a vast treasure trove of documents, including accounts and inventories of the Masters of the artillery under the later Dukes. Although many of these were extracted and transcribed in the late nineteenth century, modern historians have largely ignored their unprecedented insights into fifteenth-century guns and their use. When Charles the Bold, the last Valois Duke, took on the combined Swiss confederate forces in 1476 he lost not just the battles and his personal fortune, but much of his artillerytrain as well. Of the dozens of cannons captured, at least 25 pieces survive in Swiss museums. The documents that survive from the Valois state give us, almost for the first time in medieval Europe, the ability to see the course of history in a period when Europe was undergoing some of the most profound changes before the 20th century. The Artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy is the first attempt to combine all these sources, bringing newand fresh insights into the development and use of artillery in the fifteenth century. Moreover this is the first modern study of medieval cannon, one of the most important discoveries of the post-classical world. KELLY DeVRIES has authored numerous books and articles on medieval warfare. ROBERT DOUGLAS SMITH formerly Head of Conservation in the Royal Armouries, Tower of London, is an acknowledged expert on medieval artillery. This study is thefirst major fruit of their combined researches.
