India was written under great and special difficulties. The advertisement announcing a prize reached me about the middle of the month Of May. About the beginning of June this work was begun, and as sheets after sheets were written, they were handed over to an amanuensis. The services of a good Writer who could understand what he wrote, could not be procured in Poona. The work was completed in December and sent Off to Europe through the Italian Legation in London. Thus I could obtain only six months for the collection, collation of materials and the composition of the work. But during the time, this was not the only work I had to do. I was engaged, for five hours a day, in administering a large school consisting of more than 500 young men. The administration of a large High School, and this in a town like Poona, is not an easy task. Again, I had already undertaken editing and annotating on the systems of Indian philosophy in my Studies in Indian Philosophy, a monthly periodical. This engaged me from day to day at least for three hours. When these circumstances are examined, the reader will realize the difficulties of my position. I do not, however, crave the indulgence of the reader. All I have to say is placed before him with such evidence as I can produce.
