Book Psychology and Sociology Applied to Medicine

Download or read book Psychology and Sociology Applied to Medicine written by Beth Alder and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2009-06-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook in the Illustrated Colour Text series offers an integrated treatment of sociology and psychology for medical students. It is presented in a much more colourful and graphic format than is usual for books on these two subjects. This integration reflects the tendency to teach these two subjects together as "behavioural science”, with an increased stress on the place of medicine in society, and on illness as a product of psychological and social circumstances rather than merely a biological phenomenon. The book reflects these trends and has been successful and popular with students. An integrated treatment of psychology and sociology for medical students - in line with the trend towards teaching these subjects as "behavioural sciences". Use of case studies and”Stop/Think” boxes encourages critical thinking and discussion. Graphic Illustrated Colour Text presentation style enlivens a subject which most medical students are not keen on. This third edition contains a new introduction on the importance and key features of the biopsychosocial model and additional double-page spreads on International Health and Rural Health.

Book Psychology Applied to Medicine

Download or read book Psychology Applied to Medicine written by David W. Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology Applied to Medicine: Introductory Studies The present essay has developed as a result of several years' experience lecturing to medical students. The matter presented is an attempt to bridge over the gap between psychology and medicine. Medical education in the past has undoubtedly tended toward an ultramaterialistic conception of biology. The psychological aspect has been postponed not merely to a postgraduate period, but more often to a postpractical period, - a very proper study for the veteran after his years of experience. Psychology is no longer merely a cultural study, but is the means of solving many practical problems presented to the physician. The subject should therefore be opened up to the undergraduate, at least in an elementary way. This gives him a better understanding of his own mental processes, which will in turn broaden his conception of the factors which make for health and happiness. Book Handbook of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings

Download or read book Handbook of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings written by Jerry J. Sweet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-04-30 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two decades, I have been responding to questions about the nature of health psychology and how it differs from medical psychology, behavioral medicine, and clinical psychology. From the beginning, I have taken the position that any applica tion of psychological theory or practice to problems and issues of the health system is health psychology. I have repeatedly used an analogy to Newell and Simon's "General Problem Solver" program of the late 1950s and early 1960s, which had two major functional parts, in addition to the "executive" component. One was the "problem-solving core" (the procedural competence); the other was the representa tion of the "problem environment. " In the analogy, the concepts, knowledge, and techniques of psychology constitute the core competence; the health system in all its complexity is the problem environment. A health psychologist is one whose basic competence in psychology is augmented by a working knowledge of some aspect of the health system. Quite apparently, there are functionally distinct aspects of health psychology to the degree that there are meaningful subdivisions in psychological competence and significantly different microenvironments within the health system. I hesitate to refer to them as areas of specialization, as the man who gave health psychology its formal definition, Joseph Matarazzo, has said that there are no specialties in psychology (cited in the editors' preface to this book).
