Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Locke's Ethical Philosophy: Inaugural Dissertation Presented to the University of Leipzig I Our purpose, in the following pages, is, to discover the features of Locke's Ethical Philosophy. Although his writings abound in ethical observation, and severally took their rise from ethical considerations, he has nowhere given a systematic statement of his moral doctrines. His proposed treatise on Ethics was probably never written, certainly no trace of it has been discovered. We are credibly informed that among Locke's unpublished papers, in the British Museum and in private hands, there is nothing of ethical importance. So far as we can learn, no monograph on Locke's ethical philosophy has yet appeared. The histories of Ethics, for the most part, refer to Locke, but make no attempt to give a complete view of his system. Mackintosh, in his celebrated "Dissertation on Ethical Philosophy" gives Locke no place. We cannot suppose that the most Roman, as well as the most practical of modem philosophers, has left barren the great field in which Stoicism worked with such great and valuable results. Locke adopted the Stoic division of Philosophy into Physics, Ethics, and Logic. "Ethics", says Locke, "is the seeking out of those rules and measures of human actions, which lead to happiness, and the means to practise them. The end of this, is not bare speculation, and the knowledge of truth; but right, and a conduct suitable to it." (Essay, IV. 21.3.) Book The Moral and Political Philosophy of John Locke

Download or read book The Moral and Political Philosophy of John Locke written by Sterling Power Lamprecht and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral and Political Philosophy of John Locke The following study of the moral and political philosophy of John Locke aims to supply a lack in the existing discussions of the subject. Only one previous monograph on Locke's ethics has appeared - Professor M. M. Curtis's Outline of Locke's Ethical Philosophy, Leipzig, 1890 - which contains much helpful material. The present essay, in addition to differing widely from some of Professor Curtis's conclusions, attempts to view Locke more closely in his relations to his predecessors and contemporaries. Hence a rather full exposition has been given both of the traditions in moral and political philosophy from Hooker to Locke, and of the controversies into which Locke was himself drawn on certain points of ethical theory. Not only does such a study throw further light on Locke's epistemology, that aspect of his thought which usually attracts the most attention, but also it should have considerable interest in itself. The bibliography which is appended in no way pretends to be an exhaustive list of even the most important works which bear upon Locke's moral and political philosophy. It includes only those books which have been mentioned in the course of the discussion and is designed to indicate the editions which have been used and to assist in the verification of references. Wherever possible the references to the works of Locke and the other writers have been to chapters and sections rather than to pages. Where that procedure has been impossible, the fact has been distinctly noted. I wish to express my great indebtedness to Professor John Dewey. I received special help from him in writing Chapter I of Book II, but profited throughout by his general advice and wise counsel. I found it a constant pleasure to work under his inspiring instruction. Also I wish to thank Professor Frederick J. E. Woodbridge, both for the light he has frequently thrown for me on this period in the history of philosophy and for his personal services in reading the proof and editing the dissertation. Book The American State Normal School

Download or read book The American State Normal School written by C. Ogren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American State Normal School is the first comprehensive history of the state normal schools in the United States. Although nearly two-hundred state colleges and regional universities throughout the U.S. began as 'normal' schools, the institutions themselves have buried their history, and scholars have largely overlooked them. As these institutions later became state colleges and/or regional universities, they distanced themselves from the low status of elementary-literally erasing physical evidence of their normal-school past. In doing so, they buried the rich history of generations of students for whom attending normal school was an enriching, and sometimes life-changing experience. Focusing on these students, the first wave of 'non-traditional' students in higher education, The American State Normal School is a much-needed re-examination of the state normal school. This book was subject of an annual History of Education Society panel for best new books in the field.
